JVC interview at Celestial Heavens
Title says it all, I reckon. We have done a series of interviews with former NWC people, and just concluded the series with the cherry on the cake: Jon Van Caneghem himself.
Here they are.

JVC said: "I really wanted to make Might and Magic Online a long time ago, this was before EQ and all the MMOs. We started on it and had a lot of great systems and ideas, unfortunately I was never able to finish it. For Heroes, I had a very cool design for V that I would still like to do and now with all the connectivity and server power available, so many new cool things could be done with the Heroes franchise… (raising and waving hands in air)"
so what do you want us to take from this, dear JVC pal, that you regret refusing Ubisoft's offer or that you want to lead Heroes projects again or what lol
that ship has sailed long ago through shallow waters and rocky cliffs and now lies a wreckage at the bottom of a murky and dubious sea with your sign of approval if we are to take a look at your telling albeit brief intermissions from E3's Heroes 6 and Julien's Heroes 7 where you even recommended that crap down our throats without a second guess lol
or are you flaunting at us that all you did back then was wave your hands in the air too and possibly more lol

Verriker's tone works better towards inept teams who don't know what they're doing. JVC has done a thing or two for the series just so you don't forget.

Online HOMM? PLEASE NO! Everything is online these days, they want more and more money for less and less products all the time.
All my favorite games disappear or turn into MMORPG or free (but-not-so-free as a single good weapon is more expensive than an entire game) online games... I hate those, I want back to 2000 - 2002 where the games were still like 50 euroes and where ALL content in the game was for free and you didn't need to pay for it. Look at neverwinter online, what a piece of crap is that? A freaking manticore mount is more expensive than 5 normal neverwinter night games.
This will probably be the same crap, so I rather see the series die than this online game snow.
I hate this age. I hope it dies soon.

*That* Heroes Online was planned at 2000-s or so. There was a chance it could've been something. MMO's were scarce then, I believe.

MMO's suck. They should die out already. Invented by money-hungry bandits.
I don't want to play a game with 10.000 people around me, let me play in peace.

There's this thing called multiplayer. Not certain how other MMO-s go, but not all of them force players to be united.
Besides, from a certain angle, one could say the online multiplayer games (like Heroes) had a part to play in birth of the MMO-s. You can see that JVC was motivated to create one. It's hard to say whether that would be popular or not, but it certainly wouldn't hurt to try it out, at least.

Might and Magic MMO, not heroes of Might and Magic.
IIRC what left from this project was used later in Legends of Might and Magic and with Might and Magic 9.

Stevie said: I very much recommend the game, JVC once again demonstrating that he knows his stuff.
Indeed. I wish JVC and his friends made something "bigger" though, like crowdfunded HoMM-inspired game (or something that would refer to their plans about Heroes V before this franchise was bought by Ubisoft); it worked with many series, including cRPG Torment, so I think it'd work with JVC and his studio as well.

As much as I respect JVC talent as a game designer,
His "plans" for Heroes V Alternative / Heroes Online shows we cannot trust him to deliver a good, purist-friendly Heroes title in the future, not even a Heroes-Like Title.
He says he wants networking, always-online capability, and like an MMORPG. Does this not sound exactly like "Pay-to-win" "micro"transaction scheme to you? And this is exactly what Creature Quest does. Don't get me wrong, Creature Quest is a nicely designed game (even if the genre is too overexploited already - it's basically Team Pokemon or a Final Fantasy RPG without the role-playing part) ... seems quite entertaining. However, selling ingame special currency? For 100 euros? And the heroes scheme he plots seems to be the same. We already got a taste of that in HVI "You advanced a level! Want to share it on social media?" "No super-artifact if not online stored in our server that corrupts your saves! Even if completely irrelevant to your game and you could play online anyways, but yay for DRM!" . . .
JVC project may be good on itself, but he's not making an Heroes or Heroes-like game. Has other things in mind, that could be good on their own, but not as HVIII.
To me, the only hope is within the community. The community, and the community alone, driven development of games and mods into the direction we all like today. Even Heroes 5 was not good at release, and today only survives because of Heroes 5.5
And yes, this is why I believe community development is the only chance we get to have a good new Heroes game.

Developers deserve money when they make a good product, but Creature Quest DOESN'T requires you to pay anything. You can if you want, but as far as I could see the micro-transactions are honest and the game can be played and enjoyed without a single cent, ask Markmasters, he didn't even buy the 5 bucks starter's pack and is doing better than all of us in the game.
It is really sad so many people here aren't willing to give a chance to what JVC does now, he shows that he can still deliver magic even by dealing with modern times.
What we need to do is to bug him somehow, in the interview (not that one, the chat with Matt) he already said he'd rather get his IP back than make a spiritual successor, maybe he just needs to know people want him to do so, that people suffered through Ubi's direction and that his series deserves to shine again.
