This depends on how rich the map is. On very poor maps with few resources and strong neutrals, getting Capitol fast is a priority. On rich maps, troops should be first before Capitol. I.e., it's situational.

To my knowledge there is very few scenarios that will prevent you from getting enough troops first. Any random and most maps will encourage player to not rush Capitol, at least from my experience.

That's what I did for last nights game. Played the same random map as the one that destroyed me with an enemy "Flying". No one acquired "Flying", instead I was destroyed by "Dimension Door" so decided to add that (and "Town Portal") to my disable list too
Since the game loses balance quite early on... I personally don't care about balance in HoMM3 anymore... It is and will always be bad. Retailiation by turn, might heroes, 50% useless to useful spells, 50% useless skills, mass spells. Who really cares about DD, TP and Fly anymore? The game is way broken before the point you get these spells tbh.
Anyway... enemy heroes with DD, Fly and TP are super rare for me, 'coz in most case they are dead before these spells.

Quote: The Forge town was the result, showcasing a true conflagration of Antagarich's fantastical races and the Ancients' magnificent instrumentation. Goblins received blasters, Zombies were armed with buzz saws for arms, Ogres were equipped with rocket launchers, Minotaurs were bestowed with jetpacks, and Nagas became fused with caterpillar tanks. Flamethrower-wielding pyromaniacs and the mechanised Dreadnoughts rounded off the lineup. Dieselpunk was to take Antagarich by storm as Erathia's medieval military locked arms with the grotesque Deyjan armies.

If they intended to create a dieselpunk-themed Town with matching units, the Forge Town picture makes a very poor attempt at recreating that concept .

Thanks everyone for the great tips and threads (especially "The Empire of the World II - Rush edition"...excellent learning material there). Some I already incorporate into my strategy and some are definitely new ways of looking at things

Not only that but also depends a lot on wich troops you intend to buy next week. In the map I'm making it is possible, with some effort, to build up first town (Cove) with both castle and maelstrom until the end of week one but now I build only for witches, pirates and birds, building the halls as soon as possible and I build the Capitol day one of week two. Why? Cause I only buy these units and I prefer to use the angels I get from cons from then on. So, money is usefull, nixes and serpents not that much and I would get the terrain penalty from the angels, with or without them. My map is extremelly rich, BTW.

I hope than forge never arrive. Much better this:
merfolk/merflok warrior
scavenger bird/black scavenger bird (ferocity)
merfolk wizard/supreme wizard (chance to frost enemy)
merfolk with crocodile (can shot one time with spear)
giant turtle (25 % damage reduction from ranged attacks) turtle shaman (50 % damage reduction from ranged attacks, can summon water elementals)
drake/ancient drake
kraken/kraken of the depths
good town with 5 level mage gild.
terrain: water

Curiously, I've been noticing Gomunguls (like me) often takes experience from chests early game. It is a fact that a stronger hero may become more efficient then some extra units, get Gundula, Grindan or Andal with expert Earth and you will be able to do more then with 2 nixes and a serpent. Of course, this depends from town to town, no development beats 2 angels or 3 behemoths week two.

Vs AI you can play like a tomato and still win anyway.
I think it's basic knowledge -for common games- to get gold instead of XP and creatures instead of Capitol early game. I'm a bit surprised to get contradicted on these points tbh.

Yes, that's the commun sense, yet I think it is more circunstancial then it looks, specially in some of the most commun templates, like Jebus, that are extremelly rich. While it is true that I only play versus AI that's not the case for Gomunguls and I can link you some videos where that's what he does, if you don't believe me.

No I agree is situational, however when I gave this advice, is for someone who lost vs AI not even on hardest difficulties, so it seems to me a good advice to strengthen his skills, because while situational, *most* of the time, you gotta go for gold and troops. I do believe you but feel free to post links anyway.

No need if you do, the main link is in the previous page, right before yours. And I give you that, one must learn to walk before trying to run.

I believe I've already suggested this in the previous thread but since I think it is important: take the possibility for Secondary Skills from scholars (only from random scholars would be even better). It's not important for single-player, where you can save and check but for multi means scholars are a late game thing or they will remain untouched till the end of the match. A great waste...

I dont know where to write this. I will ask here. I created a hota map (map size huge). Before i put his map online i would like to ask someone who can test this map. A person who things about himself to be a good objective tester After playing he should give me feedback about difficulty, story etc. if it was fun playing this map. Then i will change things due to the test persons suggestions and then i think i will put the map online soon. Is anybody here willing to play/test my map ? btw i created too the map "Survival of the Fittest" many years ago i think it was 2007. It is a xl sod map if anyone want to play it, it is downloadable.

Good, me too. I tried Survival some years ago, may I assume this one to be as dificult as that one? I have the same problem, I'm finnishing a map and need someone to play it and tell me how it went and give suggestions. Would you accept a trade? I don't mind to test yours unilaterally but in that case I'll be more a casual player with other priorities in mind, guess I don't need to tell you why.
