Heroes 4 in Oz: What's the deal with these stupid cookie boxes?!!?!
Okay, here's the story: I live in Melbourne and I've spend almost a month waiting for Heroes 4 to arrive here. I have preordered my copy in Electronics Butique in the shopping centre nearby; first I was quite infuriated by the way the shop keep delaying the order. Last time I came they said they'll have it by Wednesday. I came on Wednesday and then they said the stocks haven't arrive yet...probably tomorrow. The next day I came I met the guy that does the preordering and he said that the new stuff just won't arrive until the twenty-second.
Bloody Hell!!! I just got my patience ran out so I decided to go to the city shops to see wether they got it earlier, and to grab it right away and cancel my preorder(I don't want to care about the t-shirt offer at this point). I almost wet my pants when I saw the heroes boxes are on the display windows so I rushed in. Again, another bad thing had just happened in my life that I happen to find out that the game's box is the size of Arnott's Shapes box! I was shocked but I grabbed it anyway and bring it to the counter. I was going to pull a hundred bucks off my wallet and I realized what if it doen't have the snazzy creature rosters poster that always came with every previous Heroes(I already left an empty space just below all the Heroes creature poster on the wall of my bedroom for this)
So I asked the guy at the counter about that and he said no. I went home empty handed and disappointed by the way I have to wait till tomorrow. Now I just got worried if I'm going to find the same cookie box version in the place I preordered. The guy said that the cookie box is actually the original US version box(with the yellow cover)...so if it's the 'default' version worldwide...my three days wait will be pointless.
So my question is: Is it true that the original US version box is half the size and if yes, does it come with the creatures poster? And should just wait for another week or so to grab the Europe version instead?

I feel your pain man, I have nearly an identical story to yours, Preordered from EB at Riverside, then delay delay dealy and megafrustration. When you have been waiting for a game for a year it drives you crazy. but its just a computer game right? NOOOOOOOOOOO!!

No. The US version has large box editions as well. The Elite version which is the same price as the regular version is definately large boxed and has the creature foldout card. It also has a printed manual, which the cookie box version won't have.

Of course every hardcore Heroes fan(such as myself and everyone else in HC) will prefer to get the elite edition...but I think for us in Oz it's gonna worth another month of ridicilous wait yet again. At this point I can't even wait until tomorrow! Gahhk!!! Please!!! Mercy!!! Like crappy DVD boxes isn't enough!

It's not worth the wait just for the Elite version. One month, wouldn't you rather be playing it?
Then again, I don't know for sure you will like it, so maybe it's not so great that you need to get it now.. Personally, if you hadn't noticed, I've been spending more time on this forum than actually playing the game..
And the AOW2 demo.. I've been playing that too. They are very different games.

The "cookie" box looks like its going to be the new standard for games in the future. Why do we need the big box? It is a waste of packaging and takes up more shelf space in the store. So get used to the small boxes, they are the future. (You dont get CDs with the large plastic frame anymore)

...it's more efficient for packaging, handling, display and shipping. I really don't see what the problem is. It's the new wave...3DO isn't the only company addopting the concept...kudos to them.
...why would you rather have a big box than a small box anyway? It's bulky, takes up more space than needed, and contains the same stuff, except wasting more material. In some European countries, they don't have the manual except in a pdf file, but in the US version, you get the manual, the 2 cds and the creature/town chart.
...personally I woulda gotten the elite edition, but since I couldn't find it, I just grabbed the regular edition...not too big of a deal really.

well I just bought the game from the Computer Swap Meet here yesterday in Australia and I wasn't expecting the small box either... btw mine came with the manual and creature card
I initally missed it while browsing through the various stalls but as fate would have it, I spotted the game on my third browse (I was that desperate to find it heh) through all the stalls selling games. It was the last copy and hidden in a cardboard box to the side. When I had asked the vendor about the game on the first occasion he had said that he didn't have it!
lucky me...

Just got the cookie box just today...and I am glad that it's not bad at all! It comes with every single thing that you can find in the big boxes and now I started to love it! I fits nicely in my vest pocket...hehe. Yeah, so I prefer to get the cookie boxes as long that they comes with the same contents with the regular boxes. At first I would think that it's a real rip-off if the cookie boxes came only with the CDs and nothing else but the new box smell. Now I think of it as a novel (and efficient) idea to use these boxes!
By the way I also started playing the game(at long last!) I actually pretty impressed by the great overall enhancement but I also got disappointed by the way advanced hero classes looked exactly the same as the starting classes! I haven't played that long so I couldn't really judge the game by now. On the first impression I will give the game 3 1/2 stars out of five because of the steep learning curve even for seasoned players.
And for the rude guy complaining about the same avatar used: Mate, there's another two Psychic elemental face you can get so there.

Ya
I think I qualify, been here from the start, with Moneres avatar.
So get your story straight. Check out the date people joined HC in profiles, it might tell you a story about how long Moneres avatar has been used by me. That way you can pretty much tell how long they have been in use by certain people.
BTW I got H4 today, its going to be tough to get used to. Seems like a backward step, more like h2 than h3.
