Annals of the Banner - War for the South (IC)

"Second of the Month of Timber, Forty-Seventh year in the Second Age of Heroes

The Company is on quick march for over two weeks now. Today we have entered the Duchy of Trakonia, ruled over by the noble House Raddwil.  we broke camp nearby the city Astrhava. Like all the other duchies we passed, there's a preparation of war. The lords are rallying their troops and fortifying their positions at the peak of their abilities.
The morale is relatively high among the troops, with our Orcish brothers being the most eager, the old arms master included. I do not blame them, Kree is their only city after all, and a sacred site to boot. I am just surprised that our old arm master, Allikha, who just entered his ninetieth year, is able to move as he does. He spends his days traning the New-Blades of the company, but I'm sure that he is way more eager to go into battle one last time.
The news from Kree reach us, but they are scarce at best. It seems the Emerdinan armies are trying to starve he orcs out. Or so it would seem. With the pace we're currently at, we shall reach the Orc Lands in a week. All is to hope that once we arrive it'll be not to late."

Domerth put the quill down and looked outside the wagon. From the opening, you could see tents and campfires as far as the eye could see. With people chatting, the sounds of direwolves snarling and the horses neighing, along with the smiths mending bits of armor, it was a typical cacophony of a war camp.
Domerth closed the inkwell and blew out the candle. He fixed his swords and stepped outside the wagon.
The sun had just set, and one could still see the few bits of sunshine peeking from the horizon.
Domerth was met by Magnus who jut returned from the Support Corps part of the camp.
- The lads are finished mending the broken wagon wheels, and all of the horses have been refitted with new horseshoes. - The dwarf reported.
- Very good.- Domerth said, while looking over the camp. His left hand rested on the pommel of Wyrm's Fury.
- Something bothering you, Domerth?- The dwarf asked as he unplugged his wineskin.
- I feel uneasy. The expedition for the Malus was one thing. This newfound war with Emerdina, may be entirely another.
- How so? We'll still be fighting hordes of Voidspawn, and hopefully this time we'll have the bloody numeric advantage. I survived the War for The North with your father, and you're just like him. And you did bloody good when we sieged Diamond for the second damned time. Look at them - Magnus pointed out at the camp. further down, in an opening, Allikha was conducting a drill for some of the New-Blades. It seems that with age, the arms master only gotten stricter. - These 40000 men and women are the bloody finest fighting force in the realm. That snotnosed Caliph won't know what hit him, and once he does, we'll be mounting his bloody cult smeared head on a spike! - Magnus laughed. Afterwards he chugged his wineskin.
- Now, if yer excuse me Domerth, I'll return to my duties. - He said to Domerth.
This little speech did made Domerth feel a little better. The dwarf was usually right about such things. Although, there was one thing that Domerth trully missed - His father's council. It was almost two years since Dragomir the Black had passed, and Domerth missed him everyday. Yet, he felt, that his father in a way, is always nearby. Domerth rubbed the pommel of Wyrm's Fury, and went to the nearby officer's tent for a meal and a drink.

A bunny with blue and orange arrow markings on its fur sprinted past a couple of tents, hopping through the legs of various men.
Suddenly a bark, the bunny stayed alert, but was then mauled by a guard dog, unable to run away.

One shout could be heard from afar:
-Damnatio!-
Federigo clasped his hands on his head:
-I knew trying that on a rabbit was a bad idea!-
He then looked at where the bunny ended up and said:
-It did go much faster than I expected, although not for that long... Forget it, for today, no more tests, I better get back on those tomes, there's something amiss.-

He returned to his wagon, mumbling along the way.

Domerth entered the officer's tent, it was rather empty, save for Halfman and Nighthade. Halfman, was looking at a tome of spellcasting and making some notes of it, no doubt to aid the Orcish sorcerer Orryth in his training, while Nightshade had approached Domerth, with a magic mirror in her hands. These mirrors were crafted by Clan Amat, and were used as a means of communications.
While Halfman hasn't changed in the few years after the quest for the Malus, Nightshade went through some changes. Her jet black hair was now decked with streaks of silver, and she no longer wore them loose, instead tying them into a thick braid. She had sustained some wounds during the Second Siege of Diamond, which had left scars on the left side on her face, that not even the Manarri elders couldn't heal, thus the sorceress hid half of her face behind a black mask. She still wore the robes of Clan Samann, but forgone her old armor, for an elven cuirass looted from Diamond.

- Captain - She adressed Domerth. - How long it'll take us to march to Kree?- She asked.
- If we keep up this pace, it'll be a week at most.- Domerth replied.
- That is good news. We have just received word from White Lotus, our colleague in Kythay. She is with an army led by General Zhaoshin, and are too due to arrive at Kree in a week as well.
- Now That is good news. - Domerth said as he sliced a loaf of bread. - looks like we won't be alone in this fight after all. Did she mentioned any specifics?
- Not much, other than the kythayan force is twenty five thousand strong. aside from regular troops and hwacha crews, there are several wizards of Clan Aquaris as well.
- Not bad, not bad. - Domerth said. - That means the Emerdinans will be outflanked on both sides. Very good. - Domerth said as he poured himself some ale.
Halfman finished working on his notes, closed the tome, and went to look for Orryth.

- ...Thirty six, thirty seven, thirty ei... - Orryth stopped counting as Empellian, a Wickerborn lad he made friends with several months back, collapsed to the ground, followed by the bowls of dirt he had planted upon his feet in an effort to see how long he could stand on his hands under said conditions. The activity started shortly after said bowls were emptied of their nutritional contents.
- Well, it was a fine effort, but I'm afraid my record stands. - Orryth mentioned to Empellian.
- And I'm not so sure your record wasn't...aided in some way. - Empellian shot back.
- Haha! What!? Aided? I would never... Well, I might, but I didn't! Honest! That was all this. - The reply came, along with patting of the orc's arms.
- Well, you've won the night this time around. I'll get you next. - Empellian said, a scowl on his face, which soon turned to a burst of laughter.
- Ha! I'm sure you will! I'm sure you will. Well, we had best get on to more serious matters. Still things to do on this night of mine. -
- Don't rub it in. -
- Don't rub? What, would you rather me mash it in? Crush? Squeeze? Twist? Pound? -
- Enough! Enough. You're right though. There are still things to do. Let's get going. I'll see you tomorrow. -
- You can be sure of it! -
The two of them gather their dinnerware and depart.

Halfman ran into Orryth fairly quickly, given the size of the camp.
- Ah here you are. - The small wizard exclaimed, and handed Orryth the tome he carried with him. - This should aid you in your training, I marked the most important pages with red strings. - It was very visible, as the strands of the red thread were put in nearly half the tome.
- Browse it at your leisure. But do not lose it. Even if it's not the original, there are few copies of this tome. The main focus of it is your kin and the control of the arcane, you're bound to get some use of it. And, if we're victorious at Kree, maybe the elder Shaman will grant you and audience, so there's that to look forward to. Have you ever been to your city? I heard all orcs make a pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.- Halfman inquired.

After eating, and consulting the maps one last time Domerth went around to inspect the camp. The drill of the New-Blades were still ongoing, so Domerth stopped to observe it, and it seemed that Allikha was most displeased with the outcome, as the new recruits performed less than perfectly. Domerth remembered his younger days, when the old Orc trained him in the art of war. Allikha was proud of his work, and wanted nothing but absolute perfection from his students. The training he received from the orcish arms master is what made Domerth into the warrior he is today.
The years themselves have been mostly kind to Allikha, but did left some imprints. His skin was now a pale olive green, and silver has dyed his hair completely. Allikha these days wore traditional orcish armor, with a tabard of House Dragonheart on top of the armored suit. He still bore his yataghan sword, paired with a curved kindjal.
- Ah, My lord - Allikha acknowledged Domerth's presence. - STAND UP YOU LOUTS! CAPTAIN'S HERE! - He shouted at the new recruits. They gathered their training weapons and formed a rank, followed by a salute to Domerth.
- How they're holding up? - Domerth asked
- Could be doing better. Good lads, but they need discipline. They're disorganised. Lack focus.
- I'm sure you get them in shape.
- It's what I'm here for. Say, my lord, how about a demonstration? We're working on counterattacks today, and I think it would be good for them to see what they can achieve if they try harder.
- Sure, I'll be glad to help out. But don't work them to complete exhaustion, there's still a week's worth of marching before us. - Domerth said.
- I have that in mind, don't worry my lord. NOW! - addressed the new recruits. - THE CAPTAN WILL HELP ME DEMONSTRATE THE PROPERLY PERFORM A COUNTER ATTACK. OBSERVE AND LEARN, FOR THIS CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE! - Allikha said as he took up two sparring blades. Domerth did the same, as both warriors were now acustomed to fight with two weapons. In this excercise, Allikha was always the attacker. He lunged forward, with his yataghan high in air, ready to slash at Domerth. Doemrth parried the incoming slash with the left blade, and redirected Allikha's kindjal with his right. Domerth than kicked Allikha in the chest and proceeded to counter attack, with quick thrusts and slashes, forcing Allikha to defend himself.
They repeated the same pattern differently each time, with Domerth sometimes dodging the incoming attacks and swinging back right after Allikha missed, sometimes he disarmed the orcish arms master completely. They also changed weapons several times as to show different techniques with different weapons. After each demonstration, Allikha gave out loud, vocal pointers on how to perform each action.
- I think they got the basics now - Domerth said as he extended his arm to Allikha, who was just knocked down and received a mock coup de grace with a polearm, and helped him get up. They didn't noticed, but their display of skill gathered quite the crowd, not only the New-Blades, but some of the more seasoned members of the Brotherhood as well.
- Aye. - The orc agreed as he dusted himself off. He then shouted several orders at the New-Blades, who quickly formed into groups of two, and resumed work on their counter attacking.
Domerth decided to go look for Frederigo.

Federigo was sitting on a stool just beside his wagon seemingly asleep, the tome he had taken was resting closed beside him, some bookmarks were added since the last time he opened it, he left his notebook open, the illustration of a flower dominated the page, the rest was scribbles intelligible only by him.

The distant clashing of swords didn't disturb him by a bit, but he was startled when he heard somebody passing by remarking about the recent demonstration between the blademaster and the Captain.

In that lapse of concentration he felt as if he forgot the solution to his question, greatly angered he hastily got up and started slapping himself, he then noticed that people started passing by more frequently and someone even started to look at him and he immediately stopped.

Flustered, he sat down again, trying to remember what conclusion he had found.

Orryth took the book, and opened it to one of the marked pages, just to get a glance within, then closed it back up and tucked it under his arm.
- No. I have never been. At least, not that I recall. So, not prior to the point where I could have memories. Hard telling if my birth parents even took me through.
The orc turned toward the direction they had been traveling, and gazed as well he could over and through the tents.
-I have always wanted to though. Never had the opportunity. Too bad that this is how the opportunity presents itself.

Federigo once again lapsed from his conclusions, he was about to unleash another fit of rage, but once he turned his head he saw Domerth approaching, he immediately composed himself before doing anything rash, then after hearing the captain's proposal he replied:
-Milord, you take me by surprise, I didn't expect to be invested with such an honourable task, I'll make sure my pen won't disappoint you.-

In his mind he thought: "Have I been slacking off or something? Why did he say additional duties? Well, no matter, this'll prove to be a good occasion to prove that my wit is stronger than my arm, like what I always wanted my father to realize."

-Well then, I'll start making a first survey for any relevant event until now... Milord, pardon my ignorance, but who was the last chronicler until now? I may need to consult his prior works and any notes he left out to have a reference of the past years.-

I am too writing my personal journal on this whole ordeal as well as the new official tome regarding this War in the South, but I would like someone with the right aptitude and skill for scribal work to write the official history. You will find the freshly started tome in the officer's tent. That will be your first priority in your new duties.

- No, that'll be all from you. - Domerth said.

The next morning brought light drizzle with it. The company hastily collapsed the tents and resumed their march. Domerth calculated that they should reach Navgrod by the sunset.

As they passed the duchy, they saw the peasantry sowing grain and moving the cattle out. Several times armed men bearing the Sigil of the Trakonian branch of House Raddwil, had passed the Brotherhood,  no doubt with messages to Raddwil bannermen with the request to gather their troops and prepare for war.
Domerth rode in front of the company, with Magnus nearby on his war-ram, and the standart bearer as well. Behind them were the wagons and the infantry, flanked by cavalry men on both sides. At the end of the formation the cannoneers with their guns marched. For the most part there were dwarven organ guns, 7 barreled falconets, cast from bronze and heavily decorated, but other type of cannon was there as well. Sappers with their kit marched alongside the cannoneers as well.

It was nearing noon, when the Company was halted by a supposed Raddwil patrol. The amber runes on the hilt of Wyrm's Fury glowed, prompting Domerth to suspect foul play at work here.

Having been reading the tome he was given the previous night, Orryth didn't notice the company's halt. He collided into the back of a smaller man he happened to be walking behind. With a quick reach of his arm, Orryth grabbed the man's shoulder, saving him from a lunch of dirt.
- Sorry about that.
Without waiting for a reply, Orryth went forth to investigate just what was interrupting his study time.

Domerth was conversing with the supposed leader of the patrol. the men, while wearing Raddwil tabards, had lacked the discipline and uniformity that the soldiers of house Raddwil had.
They were fabricating a bogus story about lord Janusz issuing a toll for all soldiers other than those of House Raddwil marching through Trakonia, 10 talars per head. Given the size of the Brotherhood's detachment of 40000 men, it would've been quite a haul for these marauders.
However, Domerth was having none of that, and has gestured the men closest to him to ready their arms.
- 10 Talars per head, don't make me repeat myself, sellsword - The leader of the marauder band said. He must've been very confident of his charade, since otherwise, he and his band would've been steering clear of a force outnumbering them 1000 to 1.
- So I heard. Be right back with your gold. - Domerth replied and dismounted from his war horse, and went backwards into the company's ranks, as if to go to the treasury wagon and gather the sum of gold that the "patrol" requested. He nodded to his men, as he passed the first rank, then turned around with his pistols in both his hands. The others also drew their ranged weapons and all of the first rank of the Brotherhood's collumn opened fire upon the marauders. Before the smoke had cleared, those in the first rank unsheathed their blades and stepped forward to finish off the remaining marauders.

He then decided to tally the corpses, to have a clearer account of the incident, and also to have a laugh at the ingenuity of those lowlifes.

Letting out a sigh, Orryth stepped into the fight with these marauders. These men, he figured, weren't worth a single casting of what he had spent his whole life learning. They weren't even worth his pickax. With a firm fist, Orryth punched one of these men in the face, knocking him down to the ground. Down went a second and third as he slammed both fists into a couple more that were nearby. He looked around for a fourth, but all he could see that were still standing in the immediate area were those within The Brotherhood.

The skirmish ended just as quickly as it began, the marauder ban was quickly fended off. Domerth ordered the men that Orryth had knocked out to be tied, as he intended to present them to Lord Janusz once the Brotherhood reaches Navgrod. It seems that with the lords gathering up their troops and preparing for the worst, had given some an opportunity to fill their pockets with gold by marauding.
As the men were restraining the marauders that survived the ordeal, Domerth chuckled. He remembered a similar encounter a few years back, on the road to Sapphire, where the Brotherhood's expedition was ambushed by a band of brigands.

- Good thinking Orryth - He said as he patted the Orc on the back. - Knocking their lights out like that. Good show.
- Hey, lad - Magnus addressed Domerth.- What do you think of all of this?
- Honestly? Well, everybody knows that the Brotherhood and the Raddwils have a mutual respect for each other. Heck, even some of them served in the ranks of the Company. So these potheads(( you know, as in pottery, not good 'ol MJ )) probably thought we'd buy their little story about a toll tax being issued.
- Aye. - Magnus said and took a drink from his wineskin.

Moments later, the march was resumed. It was uneventful, and even with this short setback, the Brotherhood reached Navgrod on schedule.
As the men were erecting the camp for the night, Domerth took the prisoners and requested his officers to accompany him for an audience with lord Janusz.

Federigo counted a meager 37 dead marauders, the rest had fled once they saw the group retaliate, leaving their comrades to a bitter end, he noted the captured bandits and wrote everything in his notes, to have a first draft of the incident.
He was reminded of a minor scuffle during his previous mission with the Brotherhood, one in which he threw himself in the melee like a madman, reminiscing those cherished moments he thought: "I miss the days when we were just a smaller party on a quest, I could just let myself go without any worries, now we're a bit too many to do that kind of thing anymore..."

During the rest of the march he studied the chronicles of the Brotherhood as they were written before he was put in charge of it, he gave particular attention to the kinds of events the Captain felt were more relevant.

As part of his duties, he accompanied Domerth to the audience with lord Janusz once in Navgrod.

Oh, Dhulja.- This wasn't the first time that they had done this, and it probably wouldn't be the last. He just hoped that they wouldn't request him keep score again. Not now, at least. Some Raddwil guard came to escort Domerth and his retinue, made up from Magnus, Halfman, Nightshade and Frederigo, and few senior Sword-Brethren to guard the prisoners. The captured marauders were taken along as well.
They were escorted to the Navgrod Castle, the Raddwil seat of power. The castle walls were decorated with banners doning the sigil of House Raddwil. The interior was heavily decorated with the heraldry as well. Domerth and his companions were lead into the main hall, where Lord Janusz awaited them.

- Greetings my lords. My Lady. - The old lord greeted the members of the company. Lord Janusz Raddwil was a former Grand Hetman of Merinanth, but now in his twiligh years, had retired from this position to run Trakonia before handing it over to his sons and daughters. - I hope Trakonia is treating you well.
- Well, my lord - Domerth began. - Your folk have been most courteous to us, but We had a run in with robbers clad in the uniform of your troops. Today. - He gestured his men to bring forward the prisoners. The Sword-Brethren did as instructed. Lord Janusz took a good look at the captives.
- That is most sad news indeed. How many of them were in total?
- Forty in total. We had killed the rest. These men, tried to extort the Brotherhood for a sum equal to 4000 Forints or 400000 Talars. Said that you had issued a toll for troops marching past. - Domerth explained the situation.
- I have never issued such a preposterous order! The Queen would've had my head for this! - The old lord was outraged. He then whispered something to his steward. The servant then left, and a few moments later, after the officers and the Sword-Brethren were offered some food and beverage, had returned with some documents.
Lord Janusz browsed through them.
- Yes, the reports are here. Forty men had deserted their posting, two weeks ago, we've been hunting them since to no avail. It seems I must thank you for the service you've done to us. Surely my lords you understand that with the war looming, we don't have many troops to spare for catching stragglers. But tell me, they - The lord gestured for his men to take away the captives. - They weren't afiliated with the Cult haven't they?
- No. Masters Halfman and Nightshade examined them, and there was no trace of the corruption of the Void. - Domerth said as he put down his cup of mead. - This mobilisation of troops is the largest since the War in the North, as I've heard, it must be hard to police the lands these days.
- Ah, yes indeed. - Lord Janusz said. - It was quite the ordeal. You know, I was at Diamond with your father. It was a very tough fight. - He sighed.
- I've seen my fair share of tough fights as well my lord.
- I'm sure you do. We all heard what transpired in Onyx. Half the city laid to waste. - Lord Janusz took a sip from his cup, and sent his steward to fetch something. - My lord, there's a favor I wish to ask of you.
- I'm all ears my lord - Domerth replied.
- I have a son. - Domerth already knew where this was going. Women were the one sole weakness of Lord Janusz. - He's a good lad, able with a blade. I ask you to take him with you, since I fear for when I pass on to Vellyn's Halls, he'll be killed.
- Lady Melissa must be most displeased with him then. - Domerth said. He had heard that Lady Raddwil was a woman of fierce character.
- Yes, I'm afraid so. I was able to halt her fury long enough alray.
- Allright, I'll take him. - Domerth said. He knew very well that a refusal might lead to a long negotiation, so it was easier just to give the old man the favor.
Soon enough a young man in his mid twenties was brought, along with a coin pouch in the steward's hands.
- My lord, this is my illegitimate son, Wladyslaw, and a little reward for sorting out that marauder problem as well.
Domerth took the pouch, it was filled to the brim, and barely closed. Domerth guessed it had at least a forint in gold talars in it. He took a good look at the young man.
- You'll fit right in - He said to Wladyslaw. - Will that be all my lord? - he asked Lord Janusz.
- Yes. Yes it will. Parkkun be with you my lords - He said, bidding farewell.
Domerth and his men returned to the camp, and he had processed Wladyslaw into the ranks of the Brotherhood. One bloodprint later, Wladyslaw was officially a New-Blade of the Brotherhood.
Domerth took him immediatly to Allikha for a training session. Lord Janusz didn't lied, as Wladyslaw was a skilled fighter, and it seemed Alikha was pleased with his initial performance as well, a rare thing for the arms master these days indeed. Having settled all that, Domerth went to the officer's tent for a meal.
