Speaking of that, what is there left of military history in lithuania? I was under the impression that the soviets liked to remove thing regarding old nationalistic ideas. Like say, your polish overlords or what consisted of the second world war/civil war of sorts going on during the german/soviet war. Is it all just soviet stuff or remade from scratch since the fall of the USSR?

1 was the red herring of the bunch, I miss it a bit when it was that genuine kid thing, but honestly? It wasn't something specific to Christmas, plus I feel like it run its course, I still enjoy the holiday and am happy, just, in a new light, and that's alright for me.
Snow never came on Christmas because this is a tropical island, so I can't miss something I never experienced, 3 and 4 are something that happen to this day, but 5...
God I miss the Christmas bagpipes, it's one of the oldest traditions in Sicily, harkening back to the old times when pastors used to play bagpipes all around, and since the Nativity includes pastors people put 2 and 2 together and started playing bagpipes on Christmas. As with many traditions this is dying out unfortunately, as a kid it wasn't too uncommon, you could hear it in the squares, in the churches, it was something that completed the atmosphere, and now that I'm even more fond of our traditions... I miss it.
Christmas celebrations were something so pastoral, humble and rural, the spirit of a community gathering to worship the coming of their Saviour, no matter your wealth, status or blood, your Lord was born in the rags, no wealthy celebrations, no lavish feasts, no valets or servants, just some pastors around witnessing the event, then later came the gold, incense and myrrh, but it was a later gift. And now people just exchange gifts, dress in red and sing jolly songs, gather around the TV to watch a movie by some b-rate actor and play the Americans.
I would trade all the Santas and reindeers just to have more bagpipe players back, no offense to St. Nicholas (One of the best saints btw) but Remove Santa Claus from the premises.
But. There is one they fear. In their tongue she's Red Saber. PADORU!
