Be ready to hop on the disappointment train, of those I liked the most Hegel, tho Nietzsche was an almost ex-aequo. The thing is that at the time (and still a bit today) I didn't like how easy it was to compartmentalize Nietzsche's philosophy based on his life. While Hegel felt the most complete modern system, not as obnoxious (and obscure) as Kant, and it also included the idea that nothing in history was bad or illogical, which fits well with my hate for those who just write off sections of history as dark and bad (I'm looking at you enlightenment philosophers).

German Idealism is unnecessarily complicated to be a good philosophy. Nietzche, although blunt and very abrasive in some aspects, is more level-headed and approachable from a practical aspect.
Our time is limited, thus we mustn't waste it on trying to understand extremely complicated designs of the German idealists. All of what they said could be molded into a more cohesive structure of thought. Now, don't get me started of Heidegger... He's a special kind of nutcase, alright.

You mentioned Aquinas as your favorite so I was quick to jump to Hegel as my guess, iirc his philosophy is compatible with Christianity.
