Can't win anymore...
So I've been playing since HoMM3 was new, like many of you here. Needless to say, a couple of years ago I was really excited to find the HD mod. I'd have one of my friends come over and we'd play all night, team up against AI. However, the last few times I've tried playing on my own, and I cannot for the life of me win. Did the game get harder? I have been playing every month for a few years now. I just installed the HotA mod, and I still can't pull a victory out. The AI armies are just twice as big as mine. I used to beat it at 160% difficulty, I think that's the queen setting, and I just lost on the knight setting, again. Any thoughts?

I have not played that many HotA games vs AI, but I also noticed that it is more challenging than the normal game. So, yes.

A few basics are do not rush capitol -privilege armies instead, take gold from chests instead of XP, use multiple heroes and chain, try to clear a max of things on the map a day, use fodders to lure AI...
Overall yes HotA is harder than the original game.

@tchamber, those tips by Galaad should improve your overall performance against AI. Are you playing custom maps or random maps, because in some custom maps AI is really challangeling, no matter what difficulty you choose.
Here's couple of more tips:
Use heroes as scouts to quickly reveal more area. This way the AI cannot surprise you.
Try to lose as little as possible troops in any point in the game. This is especially true if you're having the automatic autocombat setting turned on. I sometimes see players taking the automatic result right away, because they "only" lost few troops in the battle. However, I would say those loses start to add up, and human player should have better results in battles as long as you're using the general good tactis in battles, like giving as much time to your archers to shoot enemy stacks, using and sacrifising fodders to take enemy retalitions and generally blocking enemies from reaching your most valuable stacks.

Oh boy, it'll be hard to break the habit of taking XP instead of gold, but I will give that a shot. What do you mean, "chain heroes" In the past, I have sent out a hero with a nice army, and used others to relay more troops, is that it? I don't use that strategy much.
Thanks for the input guys!
@Hourglass
I've been playing stock maps. Me against 3-6 AI. When I'd do my multiplayer games, we'd do 2 vs 6 if we could find the maps for it. We have not done multiplayer HotA yet, looking forward to that one.

Taking the gold will allow you to get an army faster and you will be able to clear stronger parts of the map earlier, these fights will also give more XP to your heroes.
Yes by chaining heroes and transferring armies you cover a bigger part of the map faster and get more loot etc, it's very strong strategy.

Hi tchamber,
I learned a lot by reading this post:
http://heroescommunity.com/viewthread.php3?TID=7114&pagenumber=1
It has many tactics and useful tricks and hints that I found quite valuable. (example: how to clear crypts with a first day army, how to use fodders to take retaliation, what creatures not to take to dragon utopias etc..)
Hope it helps!

Well, taking gold from chests helps substantially. Will try that Utopia tactic next game. I do think that the difficulty is much harder in Horn of the Abyss.

I started a Hot Seat game last night on a random map. Based on my experience of HoTA being hard, we did it on easy. And it's too easy. What makes the AI hard on some of the maps that come with HoTA? Is there a setting for that? Or is that part of the chess-piece difficulty setting? We have come across no over-sized armies like I've seen playing single-player.

1 Strength and 2 speed are the name of the game with strength being more important to start as it avoids bleeding off your troops by fighting all the creatures in your path.
Very soon speed becomes the number 1 as it gives you everything from then on.
Consolidate all your troops into your best hero giving him the strength to either scare the creatures off or overwhelm them quickly. Its a game of damage, with more army numbers you do more damage and your loses decrease exponentially.
Example- Myth and Legend on impossible and the easiest pattern.
You start with Erectheus (ere) and Artemis, both have 10 marksmen, 20 Halberdiers a,d 5 royal griffins.
Day 1
Art heads east to the ore mine and then nth and west to only take the money(all chests are cash at this stage)and finishes on the saw mill.
Ere gets the chest then enters chios and buys all the troops. I got lucky and get archers as well as pikemen. He heads south and gets the resource and the artifact (boots;D)then gets the chest resouce and learning stone.
Athens- get the non castle hero(rissa and they head east to the boat ideally picking up everything but if they are slow you might need to leave the last pile of resources. (keep the troops as you
ll need them much later)
Castle hero Adelaide Upgrdes all creatures buys as many marksmen and Hals. as possible then heads north towards the resource next to the artifact.
Day 2
Erec gets the resource just nth then heads west to the artifact then to the rally flag, chest, hill fort(upgrade all)
+++then his army setup goes 19 Marksmen, 1 Hal, 30 hal, 1 hal, 1 hal, 1 hal, 5 royal griffins+++ This is the standard setup which protects your key advantage the marksmen. when you fight the royal griffons go under the marksmen, 1 Hal goes two in front of the marksmen, 30 hals in front of the marksmen then 1 hal in each spot protecting the main hal stack and the griffons. This way you get an extra turn with the marksmen smashing the enemy while only losing 1 hal instead of any royal griffins or multiple hal's
Head south and if its weak shooter or a non shooter kill them nd go to the rally flag, then ore pit then resource pile in the way of the garden of revelation. waits here for another hero.
Art then gets the resource, artifact and two chests in front of Adel (except the pile at the top) and just has enough movement to join up with Adel.
Adel gets the 1 resource left and stops there wile Art joins with her and gives her all the troops/artifacts.Then goes to the stable kill, scare off or join the creatures getting a horse then north to kill etc the creatures then the jail to release Valeska and give her everything. Adel moves south towards the stable her 3 points.
Rissa boats the the flotsam then nth east to the shipwreck survivor(sea captains hat . nth to the flotsam(2)
Valeska goes east for the resources/artifact then north for the same towards chios to kill etc the creatures blocking the way to chios.
Day 3
Erec joins with Vales and gives everything to her then heads west to grab everything thats not nailed down
Vales heads south to Adel and gives everything to her.
Art to stable then loots everything westand ends up under alter of sacrifice (ideal world) and waits for adel.
Adel goes to the square before the alter and has art join with her (art movement points used) then hops on to the alter and lvls up by destroying the rubbish and is usually lvl 6 + when she exits and kills etc the creatures west. Heads sth to the resources kilss etc the creatures under the gem pond and goes to the shrine of magic geasture (ideally lightning bolttehn on towards the artifact.
Art heads west towards the chest and rissa gets the 2 flotsam then lands to the left of the chest.
Day four
Erec gets sulfur dune artifact and cash etc then back east.
Art gets chest, gold mine, gem pond/artifact then cash but leaves enough movement to give Adel the art/s.
Rissa, chest, chest, water wheel, east to the chest then west towards the resources Loot, loot, loot......
Adel, fountain of youth then on to the killing fields around corinth. If you were quick enough there will be a chest still there. If you have both boots and gloves you might get almost all the resources there before the ai. She gets Corinth and kills any opposition on the way. If they're to the west great but otherwise kill them on the way to Corinth. I end up getting lvl two mage but normally I get vortex and leave the town open as bait if I cant kill the AI's on the way and stop them entering the town. Best case there is an artifact near the hill fort that has to be paid for which the AI will not, dividing this area either way we'll keep going west and come back for them but if there isnt the dividing artifact leave any non castle creatures there and start building walls towards castle. Corinth then acts as a stopping point
Veles gets stables then nth to the saw mill, loots, witches hut then south.
Day 5
Erec east as far as can.
Art, loots, fountain of youth west to redwood observatory to see everything. loots where possible and ends up looting/crystal cavern.
Adel, kills remaining AI's. ends near the tree of knowledge section. gets prison if quick enough, dont use trees of knowledge until in the lvl 20s to maximize gains(if at all as its time lost, same as anything that slows you down)
Rissa west then north looting as you go.
Vales, west to resource, arena(defence), fountain of youth
Day 6
Erec, east then south towards the stables looting the left overs
Art, loot, loot ,loot etc oblisk(important as this should show you if its underground, if so take the continent then head there quick)
Rissa, plunders the rest and heads back towards the boat
Adel, kills loots anything in the path of the rally falg then takes Sparta. (use art to collect anything in the way to save movement. At sparta upgrade the archers and if you can block the single pass space to the left of the obelisk end turn there.
Vales, fountain, ore then south towards saw mill
Life calls so I'll leave it there for now but as you can see you'll finish owning Ai's corinth, sparta, patras at the end of you first week and should have 3 castles, and a capital.
By 3 weeks you'll own the entire continent and decide which way to head. Ideally you'll have either town portal or water walk.
I'm cheating and choosing restart until I get boots/gloves near chios with archers at chios and loynis as I'm trying to beat 500 on single player (I cant and cannot see how you can as 35 days only gave me 498 and that's just luck with the fall of the book of air from the Ai near Patras)
good luck and never forget to consolidate but hesitation is the precursor to disaster. While you're slowly building your strength until you're happy you're actually weakening yourself by letting him get the loot.
