According to a report by Jeremy Scahill of The Nation, President Obama expressed concern about the release of a journalist named Abdulelah Haider Shaye during a call with Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on February 2, 2011. Obama stated that Shaye had been sentenced to five years in prison for his association with Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), however, it was later discovered that Shaye had not yet been released at the time of the call. Saleh had a pardon for Shaye prepared and was ready to sign it.
Shaye, who is not an Islamist militant or an AQAP operative, is a journalist. The White House expressing concern over Yemen's allowing AQAP suspects to go free is not unusual as suspicious prison breaks of Islamist militants in Yemen had been a regular occurrence over the past decade. Saleh is known to leverage counterterrorism dollars from the United States by exploiting the threat of terrorism.
