Poll Question:
If your main hero starts with Archery or Artillery...
If your main hero starts with Archery or Artillery do you also try to get "the other half" to get the synergy effect?

Well, if my hero started with with Archery speciality, then that's a big no, there simply are better choices.
If my hero had Ballistics as specialty, then I might take Archery, but it really depends on many things, like what units I have etc.
Ballistics is generally speaking bad, and has the same hinderance as First Aid: if your home town's blacksmith cannot make ballistas, then getting one might turn out to be not easy (and can be downright impossible.)
EDIT: I meant Artillery when I spoke about Ballistics.

When you say Ballistics I assume you mean Artillery. Seems like a lot of people mix up Artillery and Ballistics...
Btw there are no heroes that specialises in Artillery or Ballistics, but Orrin specialises in Archery.

Archery is not bad special. It affect all shooting units including balista. Combining Archery and Artillery would be good, but Balista doesnt survive long enough in middle/end-game. Heroes 5 did better with that, as War Machines skill improved all War Machines attack, defense, health. Tripple Flamed Ballista perks(Attack - Archery + Flaming Arrows with War Machines (Balista + 3 Ballista) was very killing machine.

I guess having archery would increase the appeal of pairing archery and artillery, and move it up my list of desired skills, but still well beneath earth magic, air magic, logistics, diplo if allowed, necro if allowed, offense, armorer ... in other words, only bad skill offering luck would make me more likely to pick it than normal.

Good catch, looks like I was supposed to get some sleep instead of hanging here.
And ofc with Artillery specialist I meant Ballista specialist.
