The best system of governance depends on the size of the population. But the way democracy (these days, more like democrazy) work with the flow of disinformation now, large portions of people are too easily manipulated through social media, headlines and not reading much on their own or being critical of what they are told. The political world as of now is pretty stagnant, and there will probably be changes coming over the next few decades.
Personally I hope for a kind of technocracy, instead of a popularity contest where they compete to tell the most convincing lies. With the rise of artificial intelligence it might also be used to control in a more just and efficient way. I am hoping it is used for this rather than to control and subdue populations.

I bet it will be used to control and subdue.

In some countries 100%
In other countries, we will see. I think if total control happens in the west it will be along the lines of Brave New World rather than 1984.

In some cases, random choice instead of voting seems attractive to me.
When it comes to democracy, I envision a system without political parties.
You express your vote via answering questions, via statements regarding political matters you care for.
Maybe you'd do this from your PC/phone at home, maybe you could change statements/emphasis regularly.
The parliamant will be comprised of experts/non-partisan civil servants who make laws accordingly.
This way people can express their political vote in a much more fine-grained and specific way and don't need to endure tiring and ridicolous election campaigning.
On the other hand this requires much more participation and dedication from voters.

Funny how the process of democracy is supposed to reflect the overall will of the people, yet what we got was quite in contrast to that.
At least 50 years ago the politicians were ready to make excuses for this sort of behaviour.. though that did make people remember the broken promises and they were never elected again... time will tell if the same will happen this time around.
This time they'll just take our freedom away and we'll be happy they throw us a bone once in a while. Just look at what happened with COVID dictatorship.
