Another aspect of SS is overland movement. When playing rampart I often travel light with no dwarves/dendroids until it's time for larger battles. That makes GE slowest creature. Upgrade to SS makes centaur slowest with one more tile movement/day. That's not anything major, but it helps.

The SS is expensive so you'll probably find the in smaller quantities ! Their advantage is that the'll shot firs so the number of GE will be reduced . It will be a tough fight in wich your mouse will have to suffer but all wil come down to the heroes skill!
But I wonder which hero will win betwen Gelu(upgrades archers and elves to SS) and Ivor(Elves)

In fact, you can't get Sharpshooters in any decent quantity unless Gelu is available. So, in the example earlier in the thread, where the fellow ran tests with 178 GE versus 100 SS, the question is, where can you get 100 SSs?
To answer my own question, you can get them by diplomacy. Or you could recruit them, 4 at a time, from an external dwelling, for 25 weeks. Or you could make a map with 25 external sharpshooter dwellings all lined up in a row...
None of these are very practical scenarios, so this question doesn't matter much. It would be equally impractical to ask whether SS are better than Titans, adjusted for cost -- oops, I may have started something! :-)

I also agree that it would be very strange if an upgraded creature were weaker than the previous one. SS rules

I don't see how this could have ever been escalated into a thread. The Sharpshooters have better stats all over. More attack, more defence, more damage, more speed. AND, they have no range penalty, AND they can fire at targets even while adjacent to an enemy unit.
Shooting twice won't matter when damage from both shots will still be less than from the Sharpshooter's one shot.
