FP, I think he is looking for H5 games, and that one is not dead at all either. 
Although most people here play H5.5 mod I think, they have a pretty big discord server too.
There is also some H5 tourneys set up by Elvin in here at times, even though he changes some things for balance.

H5 multiplayer is very active in Polish and Russian community.
Here is a thread where you can find information how to join the Polish one in Discord. All communication is there, tournaments are going on (around 4 in a year) and there is a channel for English speaking section.

I don't think the game is so dead that you can't find anyone to play with on custom maps and duels. I still play Heroes 5 as it's my favorite game series. This is probably even my favorite turn-based strategy, because there really is a variability in the builds of your army, and there is no some kind of "imbalance" build that everyone uses. This is also a significant plus for multiplayer. For example, I also play on one of the Minecraft servers lists, and I like this game because everything is honest online and everything depends on your skill level, as well as in the Heroes. Balance in multiplayer is the key to an interesting game!
