Not 'card game'!!! Classical Dis1/2 has card like combat system. But its poor if you compare to real card games. My dream is very good system z DoC and figurines like Dis 1,2 not cards. And adventure maps exploration like old Dis! It can be small cost game because static animations dont need big work but very big satisfaction from gameplay! A lot of units with good graphic. And a lot of units skills. To have various options of playing.

Generic "dark fantasy" art style is bland and kills hype for me even if gameplay is good.

Of course only black dark depressing colors are boring. Hard to see something? So I dont like Discples 2 look. But Dis 1 has a lot of colors! Its rather full of life. Handmaking portraits. Wooden interface. All of it is very nice to look.
We need various factions and a lot of styles. One dark another green third blue.

I prefer D2's art style.. hell even even D3's was nice. But I do still have a soft spot for D1's.
And yeah while not putting a 4 in the title implies it's a spin off which is a smart move. However they should have done more to promote it as a spin off, as a lot of the hate is coming from people believing this is a sequel. And sequel it is definitely not spiritually or literally hahaha.

I kept seeing this game advertised on Facebook and was initially put off by how much had changed. I remember being very disappointed in the changes to Disciples 3 and didn't want to waste my on another re-imagining of one of my favorite series.
Then I learned there was a demo and figured it could not hurt to give it a shot.
I was immediately impressed. While it certainly deviates from the core of the series, it still feels like Disciples. The combat is interesting, playing out like Disciples 3 but with a better battle map and the ability to put units in the front for attacking or back for support. All units have a standard and special ability, which keeps things interesting. You can't use magic on the map anymore but it's not really a major loss.
The demo is meaty; about 10 hours or so. It gives you access to every factions starting units too, which is a nice plus.
One persistent negative I have with the modern games is the loss of the Mountain Clans. I understand why they are no longer in the game but miss having them, especially since it feels like they were shooed away so the Elven Alliance could be in the game. Because that's what fantasy needs more of.
Anyways, I recommend checking out the demo if you are interested.

I certainly hope so! It gives players like me another great tbs, heroes style game to play, while giving pessimistic forum dwellers something to talk about! Win-win

Feeling very tempted to try this now. I was uncertain and doubtful following King's Bounty 2's mediocre first impression, a feeling which extended to the other strategy titles releasing this year. But since Omega gave this Disciples game a clear pass, I'm now intrigued. Hopefully I'm not getting my hopes up just to be disappointed later.
EDIT: Tried the demo these past few days. I pre-ordered the deluxe edition following my experience with it. It is fairly different from the original titles in the series which only cemented my idea that it's in fact a spin-off. Does it still feel like a Disciples game? Yes. Does it play like one? For the most part, yes. Is it fun? Definitely.
Some key points, mostly positive:
- Everything outside of tactical combat is real-time, so there's no days or turns
- You have one main hero which plays the campaign, Avyanna. There is no other choice of character, but there's a lot of ways you can play her
- Companions are cool, I really like them
- Decisions during the story are important and have an effect on your reputation with other factions, which in turn affects morale of creatures in combat and dialogue outcomes
- There is only one townscreen and you can build buildings from all factions in it
- Progression seems balanced with no rush towards higher tiers (during the campaign at least)
- You can equip creatures with an item and a shard, which doesn't require deep understanding and feels pretty nice
- Tactical combat is straightforward and simple to grasp, I really like the addition of backline support as well
- Combat effects are satisfying (Corisande's blast of light for example)
- Overall gameplay feels fluid and fun.
Some dislikes and concerns:
- Does it have anything else besides the campaign? I'm not sure if there's other content
- Less atmospheric than Disciples 2 and 3
- No definitive alliance to one faction or another and no dedicated townscreens
- Why only Avyanna actually? I would really like to play as an Archduke or a Death Knight or some sort of faction leader, but I don't think that's possible
- Not sure if there can be any user generated content that can prolong the game's life
- What's the outlook for the future? Expansions? DLCs?
I think the game at ~€35 is acceptable, but I went for the Deluxe edition. The demo beat my expectations, so a solid decision on their part to release one.

Yea, the game is good. I just keep playing. My lvl 20 Warlord Avyanna is completely busted already. Feels a bit too easy, but I guess it's just the first chapter with mostly tier 1 and 2 creatures. Overall satisfying. It really feels like a complete game on version 1.0 which is a rare feeling nowadays.

So far mixed feeling (after several hours in).
Pace seems a bit faster than Disciples 3, and is most reminiscent of Kings Bounty the Legend. Which is improvement. It is still much slower than Disciples 1 and 2 (talking just battles)
Frontline and backline split makes for some fun tactics and combinations.
But... it seems to grows old pretty fast. Or maybe its me that's too old.
Story is also not highest level so far, and i cannot stop feeling that this was meant to be mobile game (resources gathered by the hour?)
Overall, pretty mixed feeling, but I feel the game could be fun for 1 playthrough, with not much replayability value.

I imagine a lot of people out there (from reading reviews on Steam too) can't tell the difference between a game meant for mobile and game meant for consoles. This is also not an AAA title, which is great for the price range, but less so for the amount of content. And that's the biggest shortcoming so far in my opinion. It makes me concerned for the replay value of the game medium to long term.
For what's worth, I'm past Veranto'Or and can recruit Tier 3 creatures. Faction of choice was the Legions. Avyanna is level 35 now, absolutely destroys on the battlefield. I had some deadly encounters along the way, some of which I couldn't deal with and had to skip. 3 quests I couldn't complete are now just hanging in my journal. I'll probably try to do everything right on a second playthrough.
Right now it's still fun, but I'm not convinced it can last. I'll give it a proper review once I finish the campaign.
EDIT: I finished it after 77 hours of gameplay. Big review time tomorrow. Maybe.

Alright, let's do this. Review for the Disciples: Liberation game.
*drumroll*
I'll start with some technical analysis before delving into gameplay and story.
First of all, the system requirements of this game seem very high to me (PC). The glaring amount of RAM for minimum and recommended settings especially. I kept my eye open for the values in task manager and resource monitor and the game takes around 2 GB on startup and 3.5 GB when loading the map. Hours of gameplay push those values to 5 GB. Mind you, those are values that take virtual memory into account, so physical memory is usually half. Meaning you can play the game with no worries even on 4GB of physical memory and another 4 GB of virtual memory (theoretically, didn't actually test it). I haven't checked the others, but aren't the devs shooting themselves in the foot with such high requirements for a game that takes 8 GB of space to download? Recommended RAM is double that value. Makes no sense to me. As a potential customer with an older rig, I'd be scared looking at those system requirements and think twice before buying.
Continuing on this "not that interesting stuff" tangent, but worth mentioning, is the fact that we, me and my brother, had to look into some black screen and antivirus issues (Heroes 7 PTSD intensifies). Luckily, the Kalypso support worked overtime and delivered some fixes, like a missing optional package for Windows which you had to download manually and a false positive from the antivirus which would quarantine the .exe and you had to add it to the exception list to prevent that. Not that great when you feel you have to make something work instead of playing it right outside the box, but not major issues either.
The way the game handles itself is smooth, no crashes or errors. Sometimes the UI would freeze on a victory screen, a known bug that got patched on the first hotfix last week. Sometimes you'd do the same battle twice, that one got fixed too. Sometimes you'll see other minor bugs like a mistyped word in a subtitle or one asset in the environment not loading in battle. Those do not detract from the experience that much. Overall, the game is stable and polished.
Good. Gameplay now.
First thing you'll notice right from the get-go is that the game is basically a campaign, with a 1v1 multiplayer feature on the side. There is no single player skirmish maps. Second thing you'll notice is the fact that the overworld has no turn-based component. There are no turns, no days. Everything is real-time and you move your hero on the map like you'd do in an RPG like Divinity. There is no enemy faction or AI competing with you. Resource buildings are filling up a resource bar over time and you need to collect them at some point. You can already tell that these are not classic TBS elements like in Disciples 2 or 3. The good part about them is that they make gameplay a lot more smooth and with less restrictions. The bad part is that it requires less strategy and it's probably not that immersive for the turn-based loving fans. I personally took the trade-off, understanding from the beginning that this was clearly an intentional design choice.
It is very easy to get into the game and understand how it works. Tutorials are annoying pop-ups you'll receive from time to time, though the frequency tones down as you progress. By the time you finish the first map, they are mostly gone. From then on it's smooth sailing. The game seems to take casual players into consideration, which is a great idea if they want to rebuild the fanbase. There's nothing that the veterans haven't seen before however, so it could be that they're left wanting. The game's balance for example doesn't provide much of a challenge. On each map, there are about two battles that are difficult and you'd have to construct a specific strategy to win them. Losses are almost a given. They are not on the path of any questline though, just side content if you like tough battles. I did some, but most of them I skipped because of the absurd level disparity (creatures with higher levels than your own receive some insane stat bonuses). Otherwise, the occasional boss fights during quests, which should be the epitome of tactical combat, are almost trivial. Players have been complaining, right now they're considering adding difficulty levels from what I've heard.
Customization is intuitive, immediately rewarding and not overly complex. The leader, Avyanna, has 3 skill banners, 4 classes to choose from, and can wear a weapon, armor and an essence. She can also learn and cast spells, a limited number of which you can bring to combat on a cast wheel. Plenty of possibilities there, all leading to an absolute unit of a character late game, more powerful than any individual creature. I did my campaign as a Dawnlord and at level 68 I was deciding or outright winning combats in the first turn just by using her. Progression feels nice. By the time you get your 3rd ability point, it's already a lot of fun. The ultimate ability is the icing on the cake, if you get to use it (starts on cooldown and 5 turns is too much in my opinion). Companions can equip only a weapon and an essence and creatures only the essence, pretty straightforward and impactful in combat.
Speaking of which, combat. It's turn-based on a hex grid, the classic approach. There are some effects and objects on the map that impact positioning strategy. Every creature has a main ability, a secondary more powerful one that goes on cooldown when used, and a backline support ability. Tier 2 creatures and up also have a passive. Companions don't have a backline ability since they can't be placed there, but have an ultimate ability unlocked in the late game. Avyanna also has a leadership stat according to which you decide how many creatures you can take and of what tier. Your maximum party can have 10 creatures, 2 companions, 3 backline supports and Avyanna herself. Other creatures and companions rest on the sideline and you can easily swap them in and out as you figure out your preferred composition. I won't delve further into stats and abilities because that's way too technical and would require a lot to break down. It's certainly more fun to see them play out on the field, especially when they're accompanied by their nice effects and all.
Last but not least, there is a townscreen. The difference when compared to your classic equivalent is that it's not dedicated to a single faction. You can build up to 6 buildings, a maximum of 3 per faction, a marketplace and a forge. Since my walkthrough involved an alliance with the demonic Legions, I had all 3 buildings from them with tier 4. Noteworthy here is the fact that you get some bonuses just from having the building at tier 3 and 4, something which I didn't realize at first and could change nothing about since my other reputations were pretty bad. This approach is a clear boost in flexibility, as you can build within those limitation in whichever way you'd like.
Finally, story.
I won't go into deep lore details here, just the general approach and some surface level impressions. The atmosphere this game creates is still a very Disciples one in my opinion, just not to the extent of 2 or 3. The world is still warring, broken and divided, even the factions themselves. On a good day. On a bad day, it's all of that combined with savagery, cruelty, insanity and a sense of dread, like even walking out the door is dangerous. Luckily, our hero is so OP and detached that it's not the permanent tone of the story. In fact, I would describe the twilight twins as a bunch of goofballs that try shouldering heavy burdens and responsibility as well as they can. They're coping well with the situations they find themselves thrown in. I don't know about others, but I can see and appreciate that angle. Also, as a side not for those who know, Mathieu the bard is just straight up comic relief.
The main story itself is pretty linear, with the added benefit that you can do side content if and whenever you wish to (companion quests are important though). Dialogue options, as far as I can tell, are pretty consequential for the reputation you're trying to build, but not much towards the branching of the story. I'm not sure what the developers meant by 5 different endings, I fail to see how things could've gone any different than how they already have. Is it the same thing, but with another nuance? No idea, thought it kinda leaves me hopefully curious for another run with the now unlocked "liberation" mode.
Yea, guess that's about it. Overall a very enjoyable experience, 8/10. I might go on some rants about lore or criticism brought to the game by other people, if there's any interest. But for now I think I'm done.
Also leaving this screenshot of my hero here:

Textures and assets are probably heavily compressed which is why the game asks for high ram despite taking up a relatively small amount of hard drive size. Anyway cheers for your review! That was really informative and helped me to understand the new game as I still don't have a rig that can run it yet.
Figured I'd let people know that the first DLC has been announced for the new Disciples game which despite screwing the old formula up quite a bit seems to do doing rather well (guess it connected with younger audiences).
