Board Games and What Not

As some of you know, I'm pretty big into board games.  I generally spend my weekends gaming with my buddies.  There is nothing quite like exploiting immigrants, thwarting elder gods, managing rising rock stars, or conquering cities while drinking a beer and kicking back with your friends.  I know I am not the only one on the forum with an interest in gaming, so I figured I would create a thread about it.

Currently, I'm really excited about an up & coming board game called Cthulhu Wars.  I am really into the Cthulhu mythos and already have board games on the subject matter (Arkham Horror, Munchkin Cthulhu, Miskatonic University for Girls [An enormous mistake], Cthulhu Dice, etc.).  What is interesting about this game is that it appears to play similar to Chaos in the Old World(which I love due to the game play and Warhammer setting) and has some stellar looking miniatures (except for the strangely out of place Asenath Waite figure.  I still don't know what the point of that player marker is.).

For example:

The only negative I see at the moment, is the price point.  I have pledged $130 and that gets me just the basic game.  I was not able to pledge lower because by the time I found out about the project (one day after it launched), everything lower than $130 was gone.  Oh well.  What's money right?

Anyways, in regards to Kickstarter specifically, I have used it to back several games, including Fox & Chicken - Werewolf hits the Hen House, Walk the Plank!, and a few others.  It is a gamble but I'm hoping they pay off.

Does anyone else have any boards games they are currently looking forward to or play on a regular basis?

Through the Ages

2-4 players (only). Wonderful game.

Also:

Power Grid

Habit-forming with 4-6 players. The relatively cheap additions and expansions add replay value.

Couple of years ago we used to play the WC with this one:

Formulöa De

Same thing: the plethora of racetracks is fun. I had an older version with metal, self-lacquered cars, and we played once a month with 5 players, each having two cars. Including qualifying and wear and tear rules. Massive fun.

I love board games, but never get a chance to play them any more.

Lately playing Civilization. It is definately the game I am crazed about right now, can't get enough haha.

The board game is excellent in captivating the feel of the computer game. 4 victory conditions is just great, great. Need more games where there are many ways to win.

@Corribus

I'm sure you could find some time to play if you got some good family games.  Ticket to Ride, Small World, King of Tokyo, and 7 Wonders would probably be very popular with your family.

@Joker and Minion:

I have heard of all of these.  I almost bought Power & Grid and/or Formula De for my buddy's birthday before ultimately opting for Zombicide  I have yet to try out the Civilization board game but have been very tempted to do so.

I have a fairly decent collection which you can view here.  My three favorites are currently 7 Wonders, Blood Bowl Team Manager, and King of Tokyo.  I very frequently play Mage Knight, Small World, and Smash Up, and very often lose at all three.

Unfortunately, I have spent a lot of money lately so I'm really trying to curb down on purchasing new games.  Cthulhu Wars, however, was too tempting to pass up.

====================================================================

On a different note, for awhile I was running an Arkham Horror game on the forums.  It ended very badly for the players and I was going to start a second season.  Unfortunately, due to time and lack of motivation, I never got around to it.  If the demand is still there, however, I may fire it up again.

We play a lot of same games Omega. Blood Bowl Team Manager is one of my favourites too. King of Tokyo gets played nearly every time at some point, because after a few beers, well, it is just fun And 7 Wonders has been played a lot, such a great game and has much replayability. And of course Mage Knight was played massively by my group before, not so much lately because Civilisation has taken it's place for now.

Have you tried the Lost Legion expansion to Mage Knight?  I picked it up and the first play-through ended in a stellar defeat.  General Volkare had about 17 minions and wasn't going to stop for us.

Have you picked up the Sudden Death expansion to Blood Bowl?  If you have not, I strongly recommend it.  It's an excellent expansion.  The new teams are great, the enchanted balls make things interesting, and contracts keep everyone guessing.  I really hope there will be another expansion, like a stunty expansion, that adds Halflings, Goblins, and either Lizardmen or Ogres.

As to 7 Wonders, I'd say that is my best game.  I counted up who had won the most and I think my percentage is around 75% out of the six of us who usually play.  I really have enjoyed the expansions for the game and love having 14 Wonders now.

Yep, I started playing boardgames after I gave up on trying to get HOMM5 to work.

@Omega, did you peruse the rulebook before pledging? I've gotten to the point where I can tell whether a game will be good or not by just doing that.

Edit:
holy ****, It's already collected $441,000.  Man it's true, people like miniatures.

I'm going to download the rulebook...

Nope.  I was sold the second I saw the miniatures, because I'm careless with my money.  I suppose I should do so... ...And done.  Not very deep but I am not overly concerned about it.  As suspected, it is very similar to Chaos in the Old World.  I love the Cthulhu Mythos and I love Chaos in the Old World, so I should be good.

I am at a point now that I'd much rather play board games over video games.  There are very few video games left that I play on a regular basis.  Blood Bowl is my most played right now and that is based off a board game.

We have both Civ and Through the Ages, and Through the Ages is just the WAY better game, you can trust me on that one.

We also have and play 7 Wonders (including the Leaders expansion) and Small World (from those named), and both are quite good, although, as I cannot repeat often enough, the real game of civilization is THROUGH THE AGES. It beats the crap out of Civ.

Yeah, it looks like Chaos in the Old World on steroids

With up to 5 players though...I'd be leery of balancing issues. It was a neat trick the way they did it with CitOW.

I have heard very good things about Through the Ages and would like to try it.

On a different note, I have really enjoyed worker placement games and have Lords of Waterdeep.  Don't let the D&D aspect turn you off; it is a great and easy-to-learn worker placement game.  I have a more complicated version of it, in the form of Yedo, coming shortly and I'm really excited to try it out.

Interestingly, I also won a game from a Boardgamegeek contest awhile back, a second printing of the game Speculation.  I very rarely win anything and I was quite surprised.  I encourage everyone to sign up to Boardgamegeek and enter the contest.  They are free and you could end up winning something as well.

RE: Chaos in the Old World

Unfortunately, it's not a very popular game with my group, so I never bothered with the Horned Rat expansion.  I imagine the board would be very crowded with 5 players.

btw I couldn't figure out which one this is: "exploiting immigrants"

re CitOW, I meant that it was a neat trick the way they balanced it for 4 players. Having a game that was balanced for 3,4 and 5 player games , each with a different set of abilities, would seem a difficult task...

Tammany Hall - An area-control game about one of the most politically corrupt atmospheres of American history.  You should read up on Boss Tweed and what he accomplished.  It is staggering how corrupt and how powerful that man was.

The other three I referenced were Akrham Horror, Rockband Manager, and Mage Knight.

Missing the Lost Legion expansion, and haven't even read about it much yet. What does it change/add? The base game is pretty good overall in itself.

And missing the Sudden Death as well. That is my friends game though, so he is responsible for getting the expansion Need to tell him to get it, haha.

Let's see if anybody can figure out a few of my faves...

I like to spend my weekends building commercial enterprises in ethnic enclaves, traveling to different cities by fantastical means, playing mighty norse gods, and pissing away all my money on decadent indulgences.

@ Minion

It adds a fifth Mage Knight, an additional basic skill for the original Mage Knights, lots of new artifacts, units, advanced actions, and four new spells, new co-op skills, General Volkare (who is a beast), a lot of new monsters with new abilities, new board pieces, and I'm sure I'm missing something else.  At $55, it's a pricey expansion but you get a lot for your money.

@Friend

You got me.  I have no idea about the commercial structures... Maybe Alhambra?  But they aren't really commercial.  Hmmm... don't know.  I'm thinking Ticket to Ride for the vehicles and Yggdrasil for the Norse Gods.  As to the last game, beats me.  I'm not very good at guessing.

The travelling game might be Elfenland (Elfenroads).

The indulgencies might be Circus Maximus (although unlikely).

Commercial enterprises in ethnic enclaves could be a lot of games, for example Wampum, 7 Wonders or Marracash. More info needed.

Yggdrasil seems clear. And since we are with "Norse" stuff, question:

Does someone know this fascinating stuff?

correct!

"pissing away all my money on decadent indulgences" is a newer one from a couple years back so I'm not surprised nobody's gotten it yet.

"building commercial enterprises in ethnic enclaves" can be expanded to read "building jewelry shops, sewing factories, tropical fish shops, and other assorted small enterprises in downtown New York"
