I've played it several times and we used to play its Warhammer 40k clone about once a year, just because had this craving for it. So it's not like would throw it into garbage on sight. And of course it has it's purpose as a gateway game, much like some other games. But that is exactly what I meant when I said it is "popular because they have a history and are easy to find". Once you get over that initial hurdle and dive deeper, it just stops being a good game by comparison to so many others of the same type.

Yeah, I can agree with that. I started with Talisman which is basically a "fantasy adventure" game (don't know if it's the right term though) and in the process of trying various games I came to the conclusion that my favorite type of games are area control/dudes on maps ones.
I also enjoy games like Battlelore - miniature battle games which are not as expansive as Warhammer etc.

After having months of fun with Through the Ages (which is available as a PC game as well on Steam) I find myself now being totally hooked on Ark Nova. This shouldn't be any wonder since the game is on rank #4 on BBG's list of both games and strategy games, but I find it really amazing that it's still possible for a new board game to really fascinate me.

I thought vwould love it, but it's such a drag as soon as you're with more then 2 players. Totally overhyped game for me :/

A drag? Each turn takes virtually SECONDS. A minute, when someone really takes some time to decide which card to discard from hand or where to place an enclosure.
You also have to watch what the others are doing.
Nothing overhyped there.

Played both in my time, although virtually DECADES ago. Catan certainly has something. I hope you play it with the Cities & Knights and Seafarers modules?

I'm a huge fan of Carcassonne, it's easily my most played boardgame of all time. I own all of the expansions and play pretty often.
So recently I bought Carcassonne: Amazonas and it has been quite fun, the thing I like about it the most is that you still gain something relevant by not placing down a meeple, so the decisions on placing tiles are just a bit more important than (base game) Carcassonne.

HoMM3 board game sounds great, but otherwise Catan is good.

Last year a game released of which I was a game developer: King of the Valley. Anyone by chance tried that game? (I can take critic if you didn't like it, no worries).
@JollyJoker, yeah I found it a slug, I suppose our game group is just slower and doesn't take turns as fast, but a single playthrough took hours and hours. To be fair I haven't tried it after because well, a first impression left a sour taste.
Last recent game I played was Merlin, really liked how the game was played. very uniquely with a lot of choices every turn. Very interesting way of using dice in a game.
I've bought a couple of new games recently....Wild Serengeti, Joust, but haven't had the chance to play them yet :/.

I'm always playing Trivial Pursuit and Monopoly. Suomi - tietopeli (English Finland - quiz) is the same as Trivial Pursuit, but more raw difficulty, Suomi asks about Finland, my family doesn't like a Suomi.
I interested in English game boards where are monsters, miniatures, etc But my rich guy said expensive hobby, not recommendation to me.. Then one train, or equivalent game boards, but other said hard to play due to English and rule.. So later on I don't think anymore.. In Finland you can get many game boards, etc all foreign language and Finnish game boards haven't find in a shop than "Star of African":
So we get Finnish language and rule.. But boring! Finland always interested in reputation, so you see Monopoly, Star of African, etc Fantasic game boards out, and those are available in Fantasy shop, and in there all foreign language.. So I show you about Finnish fantasy shop picture: Fantasy in Helsinki, Finland, for example So shop also sells Mangas, literatures, etc Only I buy a MTG or movies..
Ok thanks

At first I thought the "Suomi" box was napkins
Playing something like D&D doesn't have to be expansive. You can make your own minis with paper and cardboard,
With a paper printed and some glue you can do whatever
https://gnomestew.com/7-fast-free-papercrafts-to-surprise-your-players/
(preferable to print on some thicker paper, 130 gr and more)
or just use old toys to represent heroes and monsters on the board, which is my favourite way (can get cheap small toys second hand at market squares).
Something like WH40K, tho, really is expensive.
