Knights...bad?

Hi guys, been a long time since I posted! I use the Castle, and usually pick Orrin. I'm a casual player, and stick to this town/hero, although every once in a while I choose Valeska. My question is this:
I keep hearing that Knights level poorly, but I don't know why. I usually get Logistics, the only must-have that I don't always get is Earth Magic. So what does the Knight NOT get that Barbarians/Beastmasters get?

Well Earth Magic is the best skill in the game, so not getting that is major disadvantage.
Also Leadership is a very mediocre skill, especially if you also have angels. (Leadership is completely useless, when defending a Castle town, since you will get +1 from angels, +1 from Tavern and +2 from Brotherhood of the Sword.)

Knights are indeed considered one of the weakest might classes in the game, one could even argue them being the weakest. However, you shouldn't feel bad about using a Knight - if you have any good luck with you, the chances are you don't necessary even feel any difference while playing Knight vs. playing another might class hero.

Anyway, the striking difference in this case is pretty much comes from how the developers coded the game: Not sure if you know, but every might hero gets offered one the schools of magic (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) at every 4 levels at least. If they get offered it earlier, the counter resets. In other words, if you're having average luck, your might hero will try to learn his/her first school of magic at level 4 and the second one at level 8 for example. However, the school of magic isn't completely random, and this chart is being used to calculate the chances, but only the parts relating to the magic schools are being used in this case.

As we know, the magic school are not treated equally: Water and Fire are clearly less powerful than Earth and Air, and there's a huge gap between Air and Earth, too. Earth gets a handful of very useful early spells, but it's the Slow that clearly stands out - by being able to cast Mass Slow, you're suddenly much more capable of doing fights you couldn't do before. So in other words, the faster you get this trick, the more powerful you grow in a shorter period of time. And it's not like the Slow is the only good spell. You will get Expert Town portal, Resurrect, great damage spells etc later on.

Ugh, that was a mouthful, but let's combine what we've learned and finally move to the point: At level 4, Knights will usually try learning Water magic with 40% chance, but the Earth magic will only have 20% chance at appearing. For example, for Overlords and Beastmasters, this chance is 50% and 42% for Rangers.  In other words, other might classes get access to the most powerful school of magic earlier than Knights, and thus end up having much easier time on the map than average Knight does.

And since you mentioned Barbarians, they still have above average chances at learning Earth at level 4, but they're mostly remembered by their solid secondary skills and their fantastic super aggressive Attack stats + the fact they all come with Offence.

Knights also all come with Leadership. It isn't a bad skill, but since you cannot control the good morale procs, it's not something you can rely on, and thus doesn't push Knights for better direction.

All that being said, Knights can totally be okay class, but it's really all this min-maxing that drops them all down the list.

I just did some simple calculations and Knight is actually the class least likely to learn Earth Magic. (It actually happens quite often to me.)
If you play HotA Navigator is the second worst class and Cleric is the third worst.

Knights better hope to come across a Conflux town, a Witch Hut, University or Scholar that can teach Earth Magic, otherwise they might miss out on that all important OP Town Portal, Mass Slow, Perma-Res etc.

Another reason why we need the Market of Time...

Well, there is Mullich. He might be the best starting hero in the game. At least, for my playstyle. And even if he ends up without earth, he is still good. Other than him, I feel knights are not worth investing in them.

Well, Mullich is clearly in the league of his own. For me it's kinda weird they ended up having him as part of the normal Castle roster.

And I agree there's usually not much reason to invest in Knights. Orrin clearly stands out, and the damage bonus can become absurd with right army. However, Orrin doesn't really see much play in competitive Homm3 scene, as there is only few ways of obtaining a really powerful shooter army.

Valeska is obviously the second best hero there (third if you count Mullich), but only really in Hota, and even there, she's mostly appreciated due her starting army.

I played quite a few (SP-)games with Orrin, but I feel early access to mass slow is more important for a shooter than the damage bonus. I have done much better with Jenova instead of Orrin.

You can't play style..

But good thing you can't get an Earth, when I always get an Earth.. Because of I built skills from Witch Huts, Universities, and the game revenges an Earth..

Format your file.. And play RoE.. You take all skills, if you build your skills, and HoMM knows who are you.. Helpless nicknames.. So you say ok everyone skills.. Then you beat the RoE campaign.. Update SoD.. You get an Earth and never Eagle Eye.. Yes Phoenix4noob wants Earth.. Plz! I forgot your HotA.. I remember Water.. Then I don't know how..

Other reason, I don't know.. But HoMM doesn't want give Air to me.. When only you need Air in RoE and WoG/ERA.. But doomed Earth, I never lacking Earth.. So hard to get Air.. The most Water and Fire..

Thanks for the replies guys. I've never played online. Do you do it from the game interface, and how do you agree on whether or not to play through to the end, or do a couple hours at a time?

In order to play, you at least need to the HD mod which grants you access to the HD lobby, which can indeed be reached from the game interface. It should be noted that pretty much everybody plays the multiplayer games under Hota, so get that too if you're interested, basically guarantees that you find someone to play with, as the lobby hosts well over 2000+ people during prime times.

Basically all games are played from beginning to the end, but there is a simultaneous turns feature, that lets players do their turns at the same time. Sounds weird, but it drastically cuts the game time, so the games don't drag as much as one could think.

If you're further interested, I also suggest watching the online gaming tutorial video on Youtube.
