Stronghold for little maps.
Inferno for isolated maps.
Necropolis for large and huge maps.
Fortress as a second is good one - can be defended without good hero.
These are the castle/races i'm playing most - can't tell about the others.
I don't like the WIZARD's castle defense really - it was good before the SOD.

Tower is my favourite.. on big maps. ..on small ones I like Stronghold.. But this might vary a lot.. since I never play the same castle two times in a row.. Sometimes I just have this urge to play a bad castle like Necro or Inferno..

All power to Conflux.
All power to Tower.
They're all good, but Tower are the best because all of their heroes start with a spell book and a at least 1 spell.

favourite does not equal best
um the question was not whats the best town its whats your favourite! So are you all saying your favourite towns the one with which you have a greater chance of winning? Ive also saw this happening in whats your favourite hero, people choosing the one that has the best ability not who has the best picture and story.
My FAVOURITE is Dungeon for harpy hags which i think are my fav unit. I also like the look of the little blind trogs. Not to meantion the snakey medusas with there slither. I also think beholders are superb after playing eob (where they cast superb spells) even though in heroes there a bit weak id like to seem them much higher than a bull! I dont really like the three top creatures as much but the lower ones make it my favourite.

I agree with Aranha!
My favourite Dungeon monsters would have to be the Happy Hags (lol, they make me happy!), and the beholders, minotaurs and medusa queens. I have played maps where I've gotten 230+ hags and they're just enough to fell an army quite easily.
The Beholders should have had some form of natural magic resistance too.

Favorite: Conflux -- It's almost like a cheater's town but it plays real fast and suits me well. Elementalists are just overpowering!
But these days I tend to like and play them all! Playing random town with random hero is so much fun!

I agree I think good HMM players should play with any castle and be able 2 sucseed the same with random maps good heros will be able to excel in any map. The only Castle I cant master is Inferno since I dont play with it alot and dont like their creatures

Inferno is actually pretty easy to play. It offers a rapid expansion if you just know how to play it right. Some people tend to like to use Cerberi. But I personally will try to build Fire Lake ASAP and with those 2 Efreet you can basically clear weak monsters, including shooters easily. The 2nd week I will try to upgrade the Efreet and once you get Efreet Sultans, the Inferno's all set and happy. :-)
Fav Inferno heroes: Pyrre -- as long as she starts with the Ballista, she's invaluable because at high level her Ballista will deal damage as much if not greater than Gogs/Magogs. Ayden -- Intelligence specialty's always great to have. Rashka -- more speed to the E Sultans is better!

Well again, contrary to what people may have led to believe, Fortress is actually pretty strong and FAST explorer. Just like the Inferno with their Efreets, Fortress can build the Wyvern lair quickly and 2 of them are strong enough to defeat low-level monsters. Remember that Fortress' blacksmith produces First Aid Tent and it will help the Wyverns do their job.
Once money and resources permit you can build the Wyvern and Serpent Flies upgrade. Wyvern Monarchs and Dragon Flies can make for such deadly combo and clear the map really fast! And with fast map exploration chances are you will be able to build and buy everything. I don't see why a lot of people think Fortress sux, it's a great town to play.
My only major complain being to build the Wimpy Gnolls you need 10 wood! And another 10 wood to upgrade! That's just way too much when most of the other level 1 upgrades only require gold.
Fav heroes: Tazar, his Armorer specialty is really strong and will help the Wyverns tremendously. Also Andra, with her Intelligence specialty you can cast low-level spell with such ease, especially water magic such as Cure, Bless, and Magic Arrow. :-)

Tired of Castle
Quote: Then comes castle or conflux.
I played so many games with the Castle during the Restoration of Erathia campaigns that I just can't stand them anymore. When playing hot seat, I usually choose one of the less popular towns, like Inferno or Fortress. Playing Conflux and boosting some magic heroes is also a lot of fun.

Castle is powerfull but boring, because all of the creatures are balanced and all are good, no specialities to use or weaknesses.
I play Fortress because of their defence, they are very powerfull. Sometimes I play stonghold too because of their offence.

Best of favourite?
If we're talking about the BEST town, the most common division is the following:
Class 1 (Outstanding) -------> CONFLUX
Class 2 (Truly powerful) ----> RAMPART, CASTLE, NECROPOLIS
Class 3 (Average) -----------> TOWER, STRONGHOLD, DUNGEON
Class 4 (Unbalanced) --------> INFERNO, FORTRESS
Of course this is very opinable. Every town could be the best in certain circumstances and, as someone has said before, the real fun is to play every one and win using every one.
But, if we're talking about personal favourites, I vote necro. Favourite one doesn't mean best one. I know Necropolis has slow units and Castle, Conflux or Rampart alignments can beat it in many cases, but if you know the strenghs of a necro army and have some hundreds of wandering armies, you can take over those prideful living armies. Expert Diplomacy (to keep burning the skeleton converter), Expert Necromancy and Expert Earth Magic can pump up you skeleton stacks to four digits while the other towns keep on building his sixth or seventh level unit.

I agree that Conflux's very powerful. However, Dungeon should be rated higher and there's nothing wrong with Inferno or Fortress so just put them as average too. :-)
I used to love playing Necropolis but the way they've modified the Necromancy skill so that now killing low-level but abundant monsters doesn't seem to be tempting anymore. Out of 52 peasants you can perhaps just make at most 3. That sux. I do agree that Skeleton Transformer's very strong and quite more than a make-up. :-)

All of them, tough I care less for Conflux (it isn`t so fun to play, or neither balanced).
Actually my favorities are Stronghold and Rampart (I`ll just love to play with `em Grand Elves.)
