Because "ir" is a negator, and then "less" functions as an intensifier.
So the word makes perfect sense irregardless of people's distaste for it. Even spellcheck treats it as a misspelling and it is showing up with red squiggly lines, but the squiggly lines are incorrect 
In conclusion, this is why Trump is a criminal.

Kind of like how "flamable" and "inflamable" mean exactly the same thing. But I think for regardless vs irregardless the context matters. Do I have the technical knowledge of the English language to explain the context? No I do not. But I feel like I could recognize it if I tried to use either word. Maybe.

I don't love them. Inception is good, I'll give you that.
For the record, Batman Begins I really like. The two nolan batfilms that followed weren't as good, in fact The Dark Knight Rises was awful.
