WARNING - The dreaded moment is here: Heroes 6 servers shutting down

Been wondering when this was gonna happen and how it was gonna go.. on jan 2024 Ubisoft will be shutting down the online features of Heroes 6.. effectively breaking most of the game, and knowing ubisoft there's probably no patch planned to fix it all unless the fanbase kicks up a huge fuss like what happened with M&M10. :/

The same thing that happened to MMX:Legacy [but worse]
If you think that server decommission affect only multiplayer then you are wrong. Most functionalities are locked behind Online-only DRM:

- Conflux and Dynasty profile will no longer work. Bestiary with artworks and lore descriptions will be unavailable.
- Amount of heroes in skirmish will be limited to 2 per faction
- Dynasty weapons and pets will be no longer available - All swords and Staves will dissappear from the game. Option to level up then will dissappear. People who leveled all of them to level 5 will lost all progress
- Dynasty traits and slots for them will be disabled. Those are a starting conditions like additional resources at the beginning, reduced cost of building, bonus stats etc.
- Achievements will be disabled. For doing achievements you would receive point which are used for unlocking stuff in this game: heroes, weapons, pets, traits, slots, portraits, titles etc.
- Multiplayer will be no longer available - obvious
- You will loose your online saves. Game forces you to cloud saving and limited you to 10 saves. Local saves will available? No idea

Not happy! As someone who still hasn't finished the whole game and wants to play the Xeen DLC content this is not cool. If I recall those bonus DLCs were downloaded inside the game. And there's so much other stuff inside the game linked to online.. if they just switch off the servers the game will be stuffed and I fear we'll lose access to DLC after a fresh install.

Was just thinking.. the only potential positive out of all of this is that IF Ubisoft do get the message and patch Heroes 6 to work better be more featured in offline mode, then that would finally open the doors to the modding community to try and fix other remaining bugs (ie black screen, dark map, buggy dynasty weapons etc) and add more content like we're seeing in the awesome Heroes 5.5 and 7.5 fan projects.

I could have sworn this was already a controversy 10 years ago. Didn't that get resolved?

All the heroes 6 online stuff has been a controversy since before the game even came out.. nothing got resolved.. hell this is heroes 6 mate, the most 'unresolved' game of the entire series lol. Even 7 is in better shape than this one thanks to fan patches and no online content requirement rubbish.

Interestingly a lot of people are talking about being unable to login to the game even now.. tis like Ubi is 'testing the waters' to see how screwed we are if they turn off the servers and do nothing lol.

I have never played HoMM 6 myself. But while reading my newspages today, I came across this:

Ubisoft is laying off 98 people from its Canadian offices, the company confirmed to Polygon on Tuesday. Ubisoft’s administrative, IT, and VFX studio Hybride — which worked on Disney shows like Ahsoka and The Mandalorian and Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker — are impacted by the layoff, according to Kotaku, which first reported the layoff. Two percent of Ubisoft’s Canadian workforce was impacted.
The layoffs are intended to “optimize its resources to be more sustainable in the long term,” Ubisoft said in a government filing obtained by Kotaku.

Here’s Ubisoft’s full statement:

Over the past few months, every team within Ubisoft has been exploring ways to streamline our operations and enhance our collective efficiency so that we are better positioned for success in the long term. In this context, today we announced that we are reorganizing our Canadian studios’ general and administrative functions and reducing headcount in Hybride (our VFX studio based in Montreal) and in our global IT team, which impacts 124 positions overall. These are not decisions taken lightly and we are providing comprehensive support for our colleagues who will be leaving Ubisoft during this transition. We also want to share our utmost gratitude and respect for their many contributions to the company. This restructuring does not affect our production teams.

This translates into a demand (Which is very little) controlling a supply (Garbage games) kind of deficit.

That is why I never played Heroes 6 in the first place. It's a matter of principle. I hate always online games, when the servers are gone, you can't even revisit your memories.

The game being effectively unmoddable is just another nail in the coffin. Maybe if someone talented in coding *really* likes the stuff, they can find and release a bypass for the DRM. I wouldn't get my hopes up too much, tho...

It is practically a certainty Ubisoft won't patch anything. Gaming megacorps do not care at all, and their relationship with the actual developer studio (that used a custom in-house engine for the game) is long gone on the worst terms. Also, probably that studio doesn't even exist any more.

Game's been cracked for years, playable without any sort of online connection (including DLCs). The cracked versions of H6 only need a firewall rule to block the game from the internet, to my knowledge. I don't know if it's allowed on the forum, so I won't post a link.

I'd love to see an addendum to copyright whereby if something was no longer supported/attainable, you were permitted to "take matters into your own hands"

I can see a lot of problems with that change even off the bat, but it feels right.

I mean, things like dynasty artifacts Etc. which as far as I have read are gotten "on the cloud" and need to be validated by servers.

Ah, fair enough. Well, they don't make nor break the game, at least. Might be a bit tougher without them, but still.
Otherwise, I agree that making what's essentially a singleplayer game require internet connection for it to work, in its unmodified state, is a nasty decision.
About modding, there was one guy on these forums who actually managed to mod some new heroes and stuff into the game, shouldn't be hard to find the thread.
Edit: The unpatched game does lock you out of everything except non-fanmade maps. And this even includes save games of default maps. Silly. =p

also no multiplayer, am I correct? And a lot seems to have gone into this "dynasty" stuff

What I meant for a true patch, is something that spoofs a server from your own computer, and lets you store everything locally (including "Online" features) at the very least

After all, this is what Ubisoft should be providing as bare compensation anyways (but the chances are near nil that they will actually do so)

No multiplayer and no dynasty, yes. I wonder if the first can be achieved through something like GameRanger, though.

Unfortunately, as you said, they're probably not going to do anything about the absolutely online-only features.

P.S. I just checked RedTreant's thread, someone might actually manage to unlock the Dynasty stuff like this!

H6 was the last Heroes I tried and I detested it. I'm surprised the servers have been still going on. I'd imagine they would be long gone already.

I also don't like these games with too many online features when they are not solely multiplayer games. Sooner or later, it'll be crippled, sometimes beyond recovering or management.

If it didn't suffer much by cutting online content, it would be ok, like Mass Effect Trilogy Edition. Although you don't have M3 with online features, you still get the theaters points necessary to get the best ending, and there nothing else depending on it to allow you experimenting the full single player gameplay, which is the core of the game.

But seeing that these SW games have been under the belt of Ubisoft's, it seems Disney's capacity to screw things over spread like wildfire.

It's one of the things which kept me off of Dark Souls. Even though the multiplayer is minor, I didn't want to invest in something which would eventually go away.

Well, there are many "soulslike" games now, if you want to try the gameplay style. Some of them don't have always-online systems

I'm not particularly interested on the online part of Dark Souls. One game that I was dubious at playing was Death Stranding. Considering that I played 80% of it solo, only tried the online part towards the ending (it sped up everything, so I thought it was a lousy experience. It made everything look way too easy to do).

But I'm not an online/multiplayer gamer (except Dota 2, which I regret having spent so much time on it, most of it stressed in a toxic environment, even when we won).

Yeah I've never been a fan of online games either as I don't like paying for a game that can disappear right out from under me. Tis why it was so frustrating when primarily single player games like Diablo 3 and Heroes 6 did this must connect for full game content garbage. Now we're gonna lose a whole bunch of stuff unless they bother to patch it.
FirePaladin said:

Does give some hope.. although if a chunk of the dynasty stuff is sitting on some ubisoft server then hacking our copies isn't going to be enough. We need them to patch the game and add the dynasty stuff locally. Then fans can patch it and fix other issues. Ubisoft did seemingly do something with Might & Magic X after the uproar tht caused but Heroes 6 is probably more work so the chances of them doing nothing is worryingly high unless fans make a big enough noise.

Heroes 6 is way older AFAIK and also has a less active and more autistic userbase so not seeing uproar or potential response.

RPG gamers are way more vocal than TBS gamers.

Well it's been weeks since the cutoff and weirdly Ubisuck still haven't shut it down.. considering it went down a bunch of times before the deadline some people are wondering if Ubisoft did a test and realised just how stuffed the game is without it and are working on a patch. Also some players contacted Ubi support threatening legal action saying they're breaking EU law so some are wondering if that scared them into doing something too. However it's Ubisoft we're talking about here so it's also entirely possible that they care so little they just simply forgot to turn it off lol!!! sigh...
