Our planet

I just have no simple answer. We are stagnant species and we think we own the place but most communities waste resources etc etc etc

It's bad, of course. Hordes of leftist run governments, population growth increase decreasing since 1960ties and around year 2100 97% percent of countries will not have population growth, so humankind will literally start to die out.
In some countries the dying out is already an ongoing process, in some it may spark great rioting. For example, in China around year 2040 there will be not enough workforce to support existing population of old people, meaning no more pensions, meaning the old geezers will have a choice of death from famine or starting to break the law and when hundreds of millions start to break the law... China currently already tries to decrease the pensions, there is some resistance, but no outright rioting yet.
There is already tech for artificial gestation (successfully tested on cattle years ago), but due to the leftist governments it's still not available for humans. With IVF and artificial gestation combined we could instead produce humans in automated factories, meaning natural procreation would not be necessary anymore. The only thing needed is a good non-leftist government willing to put the tech to use with humans.

As they should. When we are out of resources our corrupt governments will be forced to do ET colonization, which will increase our odds of survival as species.
Of course it would go faster if we'd simply have a nuclear war or similar fast trashing of this planet, but nothing like that has happened so far. Maybe Putin could be provoked to nuking though.
