For a moment, Shadowcaster had thought about mentioning Baarta, but quickly decided not to.

"No, I always travel alone, but I would be glad to join your quest."

Dunco looked inquisitively at him for a moment, then told Shadowcaster that Faerion would show him where he would stay for the night. He was escorted to a small lean-to formed by a boulder, which looked awfully unsteady to him. The ranger must still not have trusted him. He glanced at Faerion, who only stared toward the mage's shelter for the night.

After Faerion left, Shadowcaster went and laid down in a glade nearby, he wasn't going to be crushed tonight. The shadow mage was exhausted from the pursuit and needed some rest. He wondered, though, being caught had been easy, perhaps too easy. He trusted Dunco, but those rangers were another story. Faerion had allowed him to keep his tongue, but Shadowcaster how long was the ranger was planning on keeping that shaky vow. Worried, he began to drift off to sleep.

His thoughts then drifted to Baarta. The trouble of finding his friend would only have prolonged his quest and there was no need of a sharpshooter in a group so full of skilled marksmen as this. He felt sorry for abandoning his friend though, and he wondered how Baarta was doing as he drifted off into a much needed sleep.

At the Inn of the Rainbow Scale...

Baarta had a quick eye, and with it, he noticed Artemus leaving the tavern. He rushed to the entrance and saw a robe disappear around the corner. The sharpshooter vowed not to let him escape. He hurried around the corner and saw Artemus casting a spell; he was going to teleport away! Baarta thought this was a good time to test his skills as a marksman, so he readied an arrow and shot it into Artemus's arm. The spell stopped.

Crying out in pain, Artemus dissolved the arrow magically and stood, clutching his arm in pain, to face Baarta, who had another arrow ready.

"Now, tell me, what do you really want with Shadowcaster?" Baarta asked, his voice quivering with anger.

"How long do you think you can hold up against me, boy? You aren't dealing with a simple mage, do you? I am no foot soldier. You don't think I was left out of your precious illusion, do you?"

Baarta jumped, the mage knew more than he had let off.

Artemus removed his hand from the wound, it had nearly healed.

"I helped Jerome make the illusion, it was my idea. You foolish illusionists had no part in creating it. You were merely puppets to make our story more interesting. Too bad you had to go and destroy our plans."

"I will destroy more than your plans." Baarta spat out the words in disgust. He hated the idea of being a plaything.

"Fire your arrow."

Baarta obeyed. The arrow flew through the air, its target being Artemus's heart, but it disintegrated in a marvelous flash of fire in mid-air. Baarta shielded his eyes from the light of the magic's power, and when he opened his eyes again, Artemus was gone.

EDIT: Corrected a few minor errors.

- this is taking too long Faerion, we have to find the Beastlords soon ...and make them pay for their crimes

- not as long as you think, I just received a message with a snow owl, one belonging to Lith's cousin no doubt ...it appears than we are only missing from Mithbar for a week ...and I have good news ...they are going to join us soon

- "they"?

- aye, the Keeper and the Captain of the Moon Watch ...apparently they need a break and feel like visiting old friends

- I see ...and where are we going to meet with them?

- three days from now, in an abandoned Elven palace not far from here, but enough of this... we should all rest

...somewhere on Mithbar, Nature Region...

- come on captain, we will be late for our meeting

- no need to be formal, melethron ...nobody is around... so, do you remember where we are going to meet with the hunters?

- aye... have been there once many years ago but the path is still clear in my head ...now lets go

The next morning...

Shadowcaster rose up uncomfortably from his makeshift bed; he was soaked. It had rained the night before. He glanced over at the boulder, which, of course, had not fallen during the night. He sighed, cursing his choice of lodging for the night.

Just then, he saw Dunco standing alone nearby and thought that he would approach him and catch up on what the knight had been doing all this time. Before he reached his destination, though, Faerion appeared near Dunco and the two began to converse. Shadowcaster decided it could wait, for Faerion's seclusive nature and mysterious goals were beginning to scare him. He had, apparently, lost his courage in the jump from the illusion. The shadow mage vowed to gain it back, but not at the moment. The situation was still too delicate.

He sat on a nearby rock, not knowing what to do, and he hoped that they would leave soon. His wish was granted. Dunco approached Shadowcaster and told him that they would continue on north, and to be ready as soon as possible. Finally, the mage thought, something was happening. They set off not long after.

Shadowcaster felt he was being left out. Where exactly were they going, anyway? He glanced around the camp; it had been two days since the group's departure, and the shadow mage was very confused as to where they were headed. He was lost in these foreign lands, and began to miss Loxlia.

Then he realized something. Baarta had told him that Jerome lifted the illusion off of Loxlia, convincing the illusionists that it was them who had caused the city's fall. After a while, he had convinced himself that the city truly did exist, but was also, sadly, certain that the city was in the state of ruin as it had been before, inside the illusion. He vowed to find it in this reality and restore it someday, but that would have to wait until the end of his journey.

The camp was in a clearing on top of a hill, from which he could see a giant, yet seemingly deserted, temple in the distance. It seemed about a day's walk away. They were not, however, headed that way.

As the waxing moon rose higher into the sky, Shadowcaster prepared for what would be a long night. He laid down to a restless sleep, worried that something would happen during the night. His eyes slowly closed.

At the encampment...

Shadowcaster lay awake, as he had predicted earlier that night. His rest had only lasted for a few minutes. It was now very late. He looked up nostalgically at the stars, wondering how he could ever belong in the place he called home. There was always some way the pessimistic mage could find to discourage himself, though he still resolved to restore Loxlia. His thoughts drifted.

As he lay awake, still gazing at the stars and trying in vain to get some rest, Shadowcaster began to wonder how Baarta was doing.

Cave of the Rainbow Dragon

Baarta would have stopped sooner, but for the premonitions that he should continue on far beyond dark. He soon stumbled upon a cave, from which a bright light emenated.

At first, Baarta had believed the cave to be inhabited by people, or elves, which he found out he was one of close after he had left the Inn of the Rainbow Scale in pursuit of Artemus. The only reason he didn't suspect Artemus to be the source of the light was that he would not be so hasty to attract attention to himself, no matter how far from society they were. Besides, whatever was in the cave did not seem hostile and was much more powerful than even Artemus could be.

Cautiously, Baarta stepped to the edge of the cave and, with difficulty, peered beyond the light to catch a glimpse of the dragon itself. The light died out quickly.

"You there. Come here." The figure in the cavern said in a stern voice. Baarta froze in terror, then obeyed without hesitation when the voice assured him that it was not hostile.

"Why have you come to the cavern of the Rainbow Dragon?"

Baarta had no idea what the dragon was talking about, and after learning that Baarta had found the cave without looking for it, the dragon seemed genuinely impressed.

"You were locked up for a reason, you know, all of you were."

Baarta was surprised again, this creature knew about the illusion as well.

"All of us?"

Yes, but you and Shadowcaster were the most tightly bound to that illusion. You served Jerome passionately, and ACC's attachments to Loxlia was unparalleled. That is why you two survived this long."

"But why, then, were we locked away if no one wanted us dead."

"Something about you needed to be hidden, but even I do not know what that may be."

Baarta left the cave in wonder. He was pivotal to something, he and Shadowcaster. He gave up his fruitless pursuit of Artemus and began to follow the shadow mage's trail that led away from the cave, now at a quicker pace. He had to catch his friend.

Before Baarta got far, he was suddenly stopped by a pyromancer who wore a black robe and carried a staff that he had seen before, somewhere. His memory vaguely travelled back to the illusion he had created, and he remembered where he had seen the staff before.

Jerome had ordered him to place the staff in the middle of the ruins of Loxlia after it had been destroyed. As he put the staff in the spot designated by his employer, the former illusionist was surprised to see that the artifact stood up on end. He reached out to touch it and was badly burnt. Baarta still had those scars today, it had been fourteen years. The mage finally spoke up after looking the sharpshooter up and down.

"Thank you for leaving this for me, Baarta, you have done well for yourself, I see. Teaming up with ACC, disspelling the illusion, and releasing me from that prison of a body that I was trapped in before. Efreeti cannot reach this plane of power."

"Matthias?!? I thought that you were dead."

"No," a familiar voice spoke out from above the conversing pair, "I found him after I left you at the inn. Teleporting is the only way to travel." He laughed. "And all this time you thought I was going to help you look for your shadow mage friend. You two cannot join again, it would be too dangerous."

"Now, will you come quietly or do we have to force you to come with us?"

Clearly outmatched, Baarta surrendered to the pair.

Some time has passed since the visit of the Rainbow cave. Now the group along with Shadowcaste. The group was now more western and northward. They were actualy heading to the only dwarven kindgom of Biz-Birmuth. The weather was chilly and it was snowing.

Time has lead dunco back to his Frost elven roots and over the time of their journey he began once again studing air magic for snow and ice have always fascinated him. He also met a new aquiry to their group. Once when traveling through one of the northern forests, infront of the rest ans usual he found a small cave form which quiet whinning was comming. He went in to find an abandowned snow white wolf pup. Seeing that he was only a being with feelings he took the pup with him seeing no sibblings or mother. Normaly he would have shiped him of to Lith, but he found out that he was quite attached to him. He named the pup Robin and he soon became probably his best companion.

Now the wolf was running ahead of him feeling great in the snow. His sky blue eyes shinning. Dunco was always feeling good with him for he brought joy to his mostly hopeless world. The drows were advancing faster then ever and only a united kingdom of the elves would stop them. Right now they were headed to the dwarven lands to see an old dwarven warrior. He quite didn't know why but before they left the dragon he told him he could help him. So after endless days and endless complains from his companions they finnaly reached the hills of Dwarith.

Along the course of the journey, Shadowcaster had drawn one conclusion: he hated the cold weather, and snow only made such weather all the more unbearable. This puzzled and dismayed him, for ACC had enjoyed the snow, he had thrived in it in the illusion. The feel of snow, while the same here as it was in Loxlia, did not interest him as it once had. While ACC may have loved the snow, Shadowcaster hated it.

His spirits were low. While Shadowcaster was the same person as ACC on the inside, he would never be the same on the outside again. He did not belong in Loxlia, and if he tried to rebuild it, Shadowcaster would only be raising a city up in which he would be a stranger, an outcast even. A shadow mage had no place in the Order ranks. These thoughts flooded his mind for the days and weeks that his company trudged through the snow. This, and his lost opportunity.

Shadowcaster's link to Greenleaf was cut long ago, when the rangers broke suddenly away from Dunco's group in search of the Keeper he had heard them speak about. Shadowcaster assumed that this "Keeper" was their counter to Greenleaf, but assuming was all he could do. He had never even seen either one of them.

The seemingly endless trail hiking in the unrelenting weather had gotten to Shadowcaster long ago, and the shadow mage's constant verbal wishes for a torch to set himself aflame served only to annoy and demoralize his companions, so Shadowcaster stopped until he was convinced that talking incessantly was the only way he could gain the heat he needed to go on. He hoped to be out of the snow soon.

Shadowcaster's wish was soon granted. In the distance, he saw a kingdom, the first glimpse of civilization in months, and was thrilled to learn that it was their destination. When they arrived, he planned to build a nice, big fire and fall asleep next to it, allowing his bones to thaw and his mind to clear before he ever went out in the snow again.

Now finally in Dwarith most of the group seemed relieved for they didn't belive that the endless journey would end. As they entered the city their destination was certain. Find a nice cosy inn. And so they did. First they came to the Endless Mine, but that was more of a tavern ad the inn keeper seemed horrified at the thought of having a wolf sleep in his tavern. So they left. The next try was the inn of the Howling Wind, but thatone was full. Finnaly they came to a small inn called the Frozen Wolf.
"Nice..." Thought Dunco and so they entered.
The inns furnashings were rather common, but still unusual. The place was warm and...empty?
"Empty?"thought Dunco "Here and now? Well lets see whats wrong." They alked up to the bar and Dunco started the talking
"Hello!"
A dwarf came behind the counter and said
"Yes young masters, how can i help you?"
"Umm, we'd like to book some rooms."
"Ok, how many?"
"About 3."
"Ok, and a question are you afraid of wolves?"
The dwaf looked at the pup and looked that he understood...

Meanwhile

As dusk passes, two cloaked men enter the kingdom of the dwarves, watching and waiting for the shadow mage. With them is a bound and exhausted sharpshooter, their prisoner and bait. These men had followed Dunco and his band all the way from the Cave of the Rainbow Dragon, and were ready to find a room.

"Where is he?" asked Matthias after a while, "I haven't had a decent sleep in ages."

Artemus ignored him and continued scouring the city, picking through the mounds of people gathered in the streets for any glimpse of evidence that the shadow mage had travelled through. After a while, he gave up and turned to the pyromancer.

"We'll search for him maually, the rat cannot hide in his hole forever, especially not when we have such enticing bait as this." he said as he shoved the tied-up sharpshooter from behind, causing him to fall face first in the snow. He then walked away into the city, leaving Matthias and Baarta behind.

Matthias began to complain. "Who does he think he is, ordering me around like that? Lucky for him, I need his talents to help lure out that wretched shadow mage, but once we have the Shadowcaster out of the picture, I can rid myself of his presence as well." He smiled to himself as he concocted his betrayal. Yes, it would be perfect.

The fire mage lifted Baarta's body out of the snow and continued on into the city, eager for the quickly approaching moment of his victory over both foe and friend. Matthias glanced at his staff and smiled again while Baarta observed in horror. He soon realized the purpose of the staff.

...Next morning in the inn...

Everyone is up and downstairs. Noone realy knows why they chose to came here, but that is what Dunco is about to tell them.
"So the reason why you are hre is simple. The morning when we left the dragons cave, i decided to go back and have a quick word with him. He told me to seek out an old alchymist living in this city. He didn't sa why he just told me to. So thats what we're doing here."

"Ah right I see. So you took us through ice and snow to find some stupid old dwarf?" Says Crooked Tusk sounding not too happy. But before he can continue, he chooses not to, beacouse Vilenith shot a very dissaproving look at him.
Dunco taks Hendirer and Robin to the coubter and looks once again for the innkeeper. After a while of waiting the dwarf oce again come looking awoken.
"What can i do for you lads?" He asks.
"We are looking for an old alchymist named...Thergon. Do you know by a chance where he lives?"
"Thergon? An alchymist? That old drunk? Well he lives just downstreet in an old brick house, but I'm not sure if he is an alchymist..."

So the group sets on its way. After not long they reach the brick house and come in. Noone answeres, but then a scruffy-looking dwarf comes from one of the doors.
"What dou you want?!"
"I am Sir Dunco lord of the Green forest and this is..." Sir Dunco then introduces everyone from the group.
"And?" the dwrf asks.
"We were send here bythe rainbow dragon."Finishes Vilenith
"So it you who are to come well come with me."
He leads them into a small room.
"Some time ago i was a good friend with one of the elven generals. Thisselwood I think was his name. He told me alot of things whenever he would stop by. He came atleast once in 6 months. One time he didn't come, but only sent me a note to go see a certain dragon. I seeked out this dragon and he told me everything of some curse of the elven kingdom. Most of it i forgot, but he gave me a scroll for a group that was sure to follow. It's in the back." He says looking to dunco and pointing to a door...

Shadowcaster followed Sir Dunco and the others into the alchemist's shop and worked his way through the crowd that had formed in the small room. Eventually, he reached the far wall and leaned against it, still jolted by the sleepless night he had endured. Something wasn't right, and the shadow mage could feel it.

He tried not to think about what had happened to him, but in this setting, pessimism seemed natural to him. Constantly freezing was not a channel for a positive attitude in his book, and the shadow mage soon began to doze off, a welcome and much needed sleep. But it did not last.

Dunco's voice suddenly grew in volume, disallowing any sort of peace to prevail in that stuffy setting. While his body was slowly warming, Shadowcaster grew increasingly uncomfortable with his surroundings. He reluctantly took his leave and stepped outside for some solitude.

Instead, he found unwanted company. Across the way, Baarta staggered by, led by Artemus and another who he had not seen before. Strangely, it was the latter that concerned him. He carried himself in such a way that implied royalty, yet was walking in the frigid cold alongside a ragged mage and a badly beaten sharpshooter, their prisoner. It was clear that this pyromancer was the one who should be feared the most. The shadow mage quickly retreated back into the shop.

More quickly than before, he wrestled his way to the rear of the room and began pondering his discomfort. He hadn't the courage to face those two, and in that lacking, he realized his questions would never be answered. Looking around the room at the gloomy setting, Shadowcaster decided not to involve Dunco and his men in this personal struggle. It would be a much more difficult road alone, but this was the only way he could ever truly be at peace. Besides, he didn't want to put anyone in needless danger at his own expense. The shadow mage approached Dunco and explained his inclinations.

After a while, Dunco regretfully gave Shadowcaster his blessings and watched as the mage began walking down the road. Suddenly, he turned and stopped, looking back at Dunco for a moment then returning to the shop. Shadowcaster looked mournfully at Dunco and his group of men that would follow him anywhere, then realized that he and Dunco might meet again someday. He extended his hand and said:

"I don't believe we've said goodbye, old friend."

After a regretful farewell from the friend he barely knew, Shadowcaster dashed off in the direction that he had seen the trio head, hoping that the constant exertion would help delay his frostbite. He rounded the corner and ran straight for a forest pathway.

The woods were dark and foreboding, and the trees reached solemly out toward the shadow mage, as if trying to warn him of the impending danger that lie in wait ahead. The brush grew thicker as he pressed on, and the path soon disappeared altogether. Not only had he lost Artemus and Baarta, but he now found himself lost as well.

Despite his conclusion, the shadow mage continued deeper into the forest, driven by an unseen impulse that he could not resist. A mix of curiousity and anxiety stirred within him, but he found nothing.

Dejected, Shadowcaster turned to head back the way he came. As if on cue, a figure leapt from hiding just as the shadow mage turned away and filled the forest with a blinding light. The shadow mage fell, unconcious, to the forest floor.

When my father died Maxell became like a father figure to me. He looked after me and helped me turn my home into the rangers guild and smithy it is today. Without him i don't know where i would be today. Maxell is old now, almost 70. It will be his 69th birthday in a few days and i intend to surprise him with a visit. I left my store and began my journey to the dwavern lands. I should pick up a gift on the way as i have yet to buy him something. Maxell is a warrior at heart, maybe a new Axe or chain mail. Whatever i decide to get him it must be perfect, a gift fit for a dwavern king...

Isildur had only been walking for an hour before darkness befell the land. The forest can be a dangerous place at night, even to a skilled ranger like himself. Out of his pack he pulls a sleeping bag and sets up refuge under a small tree, surrounded by rocks. He lights a small fire for warmth and closes his eyes.

*crack*

"what was that?"

Isildur looks up to see were the noise came from. TO his surprise he sees two men, one walking away. Their footsteps are light, they must also call the forest home. It would be to risky to alert them of his consciousness so Isildur decides to lye there, with his hand on his sword hilt...

picking up where the assasin from page 3 left off...

*as I rest from my long run from the Queen's Elite gaurd, I stop and pause, exhausted from my long run. I have no idea where I am or how far I have come, but I do know that even for a Drow...I am tired. Panting softly I look around for tell-tale signs of life. Having found none, I sit back against the tree and notice several of my favorite ferns growing nearby. Having lost my favorite dagger, I dig around through my pockets until I come across a small pocket knife I use for traveling. I withdraw some arrows that I have also carried on my journey and use the sticky sap from the ferns, along with an alchemical concoction in a small vial I have contained in another pocket, to produce a poison for the tip of my arrows*

Gorman: Pity that I didn't think of this before. All of those blasted gaurds made me nervous. And that elf that caught my dagger. He shall pay...

*I go back to my work and soon all twenty of the arrows I brought with me are deadly. Even the smallest scratch could nearly kill a man. The problem still concerns me, however, that I have no real combat weapon. I have my pocket knife but that is surely not as deadly as one might expect. No, I must find a town and stock up on supplies. My need for more ingredients for my poison making are high, and my need for killing is high as well... I pity the first one to come across my path. A drow in need of something is not one to cross...*
