Trained horses?

There could possibly be some way to train your horse so it can move farther, I just don't get it that when a hero gains experience he moves farther on the map (the horse is carrying him, he isn't walking)

Think about it.

Yes, but only for a week, once a horse is trained it stays trained unless left in the wild

Although I do see what you mean, I think a horse should be able to be able to gain experience for more than one level, plus what I was basicly saying was that a hero rides the horse and therefore his movement points should not be affected by his experience points, instead the horse's

Hmm... No

As far as i've been able to tell a heroes experience has nothing to do with his(or the horses) movement.  Only logistsics, pathfinding and morale modifiers on the map.

I think the horse is 'supposed' to represent the hero's army not the actual horse he is riding.

When a hero can move further because of logistics it means that he is guiding his army on a more logical path and therefore travelling quicker.

I agreee with Rage horses shouldnt go up levels but you should be able to do something with them. heroes can leave them in the wild or keep them at a cost 50g/day/horse or something.

Well, since hero's are now going to be troops in their own right, they might have a SPEED stat as other troops do...  if so, purchasing steeds from towns or adventure location might be a good way to increase speed (both in combat and on adventure map) as well as add special abilities (Flight in combat for Pegasi, Swamp native for Giant Basilisk, etc.)

Maybe......

That could work out.  Maybe you could only visit it every month or so and get one more movement each time.

i dont think thats a good idea. the speed of the horse doesnt matter. if the hero rides away faster than his army can walk then whats the point? i see no point in that. Besides, movement points apply for the whole army, so wouldnt it be nice if magic johnson was standing on the map teaching your troops how to run?

I wasn't thinking about "upgrades" as such, instead ther would be one basic mount available at all towns and one advanced one (You'd have to but them, and upgrade the stables or whatever...  Say for the Preserve you get an Elven Horse (Better speed, no bonus to defense/attack) or a pegasus (Requires that creature stucture PLUS an upgrade to the stables, they get great speed and fly in combat).

Without a steed you use your basic hero's movement (which might be slower than some of your troops!), with a steed you get the steed's movement plus maybe a little benifit (War Horses of Humans give +1 attack & Defense/ The Griffen upgrade isn't much better, but you fly and get two retaliations).  In effect Steeds are just a "common" artifact.

You can't upgrade your steeds but you can trade them for new ones available at other towns/adventure sites...

They're can also be an Adventure spell "Summon Steed", that gives you a magical steed (type depends on magic type, abilities depend on you profficiency in that field of magic)...  Steeds could also be traded between heroes just like artifacts (except those recieved with the "Summon Steed" spell).

If each town has 2 steeds, each magic type has 1 that gives 17...  say another 3 available on the map for a total of 20. (one such map steed could be a drake (small unintelligent dragon) that has an attack of it's own, flies, decent speed, gives + to both attack and defense and cost A LOT of money!)

Ofcourse you wouldn't have to buy a steed, especially if your hero isn't the slowest creature in the army.  It's up to you, kinda like buying a spell book.  Comments?

Very good Idea.

I like it a lot.  I thought of some steeds (I put some of yours in too). I also thought that maybe if something happened your steed could run off or you could get a worse than basic steed that downgrades you a bit.

griffin:flies, +2 attack, two retaliations, speed 19

donkey: -2 all primary skills -2 movement, special attack-hind kick, speed 15

Drake:flies, +5 to all primary skills, spits fireballs unlimited shots,  boosts group moral, speed 23 (costs lots of $$$$)

Pegasus: flies, +3 to knowlage and spell power, gives your hero two turns in battle, speed 25

Guys, you have some imagination, really.....I liked especialy the donkey! But do you think it would really work out?
First, 3DO would never accept that.As you know they decided that the hero alone will not adjust the troops stats anymore; so how can you think that they will allow the hero's horse to do that?C'mon...
On the other hand, donkey against pegasy, is that fair?
And finally, indeed the horse sugests the whole army, so the speed is given by the slowest unit tou have.No one said the hero is riding a horse in reality, maybe he travels on the back of a dragon...

LMAO!

This has to be the funniest thread I've ever seen! What if your hero rides faster than his army! He leaves all his soldiers behind! LOOOOOL!

A horse doesn't dictate how fast a hero moves on the map. The slowest creature dictates this!

sorry...

I guess I didn't make it clear.  Since heroes fight in Heroes 4,  That would be their speed on the battle map, not on the adventure map. Like you said, the slowest creature should decide that. If anyone else has ideas for steeds, please post them.

here are a few more:

-kangaroo: can't fly, but can hop over obsticles 1 accross,  speed 15-18 (depending on the type of kangaroo) boosts troop morale by 2 because it is exotic and funny

-cerberus: (evil heroes only)  attacks all adjacent units, lowers enemy moral by 1, boosts attack skill by 2,  speed 15

And with the cerberus, You want the hero to engage an enemy and then his "horse" to attack it too?

First of all the steed is not boosting the troops stats,  he is boosting the heroes.  Second of all, a donkey against a pegasus would NOT be fair.  As I said before, if your steed ran off or somthing, you may have no choice but to downgrade to a worse one.
