I think it's because Tazar is from Fortress, the castle with more defense.
All heroes attain ability in the four primary skills; Attack, Defense, Power, and Knowledge. Martially oriented heroes, like Knights and Rangers, will have their Attack and Defense skills advance more rapidly. Heroes studying magic, like Wizards and Necromancers, will more often gain Power and Knowledge. The Primary Skill Advancement by Class table displays the chance a particular primary skill will advance when a hero reaches a new level. After a hero reaches level 9, their advancement generally becomes more balanced.
*First:Takar have Atk 0, Def 4, SP 1 and KWL 1. Before he was level 9, he have 30% to win 1 atk in the next level, 60% in Def, 5% in SP and 5% in Kwl. He can get Atk 3,Def 9, SP 1 and Kwl 1, in level 9. His Defense was so high.
*Second:His Unique Ability is armor. Each level you win, your armor increase 5%. I have a save, I was playing with Tazar in level 20, 18 Thunder Birds attack my Serpents Flies, and I only lose 4. I think Tazar, Neela, Mephala and Thorgrim the bests heroes. Thorgrim doesn't have armor, but have resistence, and in level 25 he can be imune to all magics, not imune, but always resists.

ok wake up, thats not how it works, taz on L20 has double his armorer skill, you could say he has 2 skills of exp armorer, 30% or however you wanna rate it

Hmm... I seem to remember bringing Tazar to level 66 in an XL map and with Expert Shield he had something like 94% damage reduction
Thorgrim gains 1% magic resistance per level (5% of 20%, duh ). A level 50 Thorgrim with the three resistance-enhancing artifacts reaches exactly 100% magic resistance, i.e. it is as if he were wielding a one-way Orb of Inhibition

Tazar tops out at 30%
I could be wrong, but I believe Andi is right. Tazar tops out at 30% damage reduction. What makes him so strong is the fact that the majority of the time he gets a +1 def on level advances, (see EnergyElemental's post for describtion). Any hero with 40 to 50 def is going to be tough to hurt, (except with magic) and its not to difficult to get Tazar with 40 to 50 for a def stat. But no matter how high you get Taz level wise, his specialty bonus will never give you more than 30% increase.
Same goes for offense specialist (Hack, etc...) Except they top out at a 60% specialty bonus.
This was told to me by somebody who knows every inch of this game, but I have never done the math personally.

Man, what Andi said was that the 5% bonus per level is not additive, but applies to the skill percentage. That's why level 20 hero will double whatever percentage he has (20 * 5% = 100% bonus). This applies to any hero with a skill special. Level 20 Tazar with expert Armorer will have 30% reduction, but with advanced armorer will have 20%. At level 40 they will tripple their percantage and so on. Theoretically level 112 or so Tazar will have 100% damage reduction - even level 100 Crag won't hurt him
