well that depends on the situation really. If I was defending somewhere I would opt for the farie dragons because of their range of spells and mirror thingy. For attacking I would go for the mantis or phoenix as they can soak up damage and both have excellent movement and special abilities.
Overall though? Probably the Farie dragons if I had to choose, but given the choice of 2 of 3 I would pick mantis and dragon, the best combo in my opinion

I personaly think that the phoenix is better because of its reborn ability.

Generally when building up a Preserve, I go with Faerie Dragons as my 4th level, and recruit Mantises from the creature portal. The Mantis is fast, flies, tough (especially with a little Giant Strength thrown in), has First Strike and the Bind ability is a nice bonus. The big bugs give Nature something to help take on Black Dragons. Meanwhile, the FDs sling spells ...a nasty combo against any army. So I get the best of both worlds...

i agree
i agree with that the farie dragons have the best bonuses and i like to have the portal to get the mantises so i can have there adn strength and there flying ability. but i think that th epheonixes are th ecoolest although that doesn't raelly matter now does it

I still think that phoenixes are better(lots of damage,preety fast,rebirth ability,fire resistance),but i really don't play to much with nature!!

I voted for Faerie Dragons, not only because they're Dragons but because I've pitted a single Faerie Dragon against a single Phoenix, and the Faerie Dragon wins. However, I know that that certainly isn't the most accurate way to determine how good a creature is, so please don't get on my case for it

well i said mantis 'cause praymantis's are soo kewl.
But phoenix's would kick ass, what's the % for rebirth? because if its pretty hi, you could split your stacks of phoenixs like 2-2-2-2-2 and all rebirth... YUMMY

The Mantis cannot really compete because you only get about 1/week from the portal whereas you get 2/week of Phoenxies and Faerie Dragons.
Faerie Dragon has many good spells so splitting them is sometimes a good idea. Confusion is certainly one of the better spells in the game.
Of the three listed Faeries are the best (unless you play with certain line-ups which are bad for Faeries such as Asylum with Black Dragons).
The creature which is best to take from the creature portal is often not the Mantis. If you have Grand Master summoning taking one of the Elementals makes more sense.
Air Elemental if you want a fast and durabale creature.
Fire Elemental if you want a shooter.
Water Elemental if you want a spellcaster.

the faerie dragon is best choice - better on defence, but good in attack against slow units.
And should I add that Djive has a good point there whith them mantises they ain't that good overall

The rebirth is 50% of the number of the present Phoenixes.
If they die they will automatically reborn a random %

Yeah the funny thing about phoenix though is I remember using a hero with gm archery on a couple, killing the stack, watch them rebirth and then killing them again with the second shot!

Fairy Dragon because its attack spells don't allow retaliation, even up close, which is very useful. The other two are also good. The best for summoning is Phoenix because the rebirth thing really adds up after you've summoned a whole heap of them against a powerful foe.

I like Faery Dragons better than any 4th level creature in Preserve. But IF I am fighting with Black Dragon and other with resistance I use Mantis instead. Their "Binding" abillity helps a lot. (And of course half damage from binded creature, by the way it works on Black Dragon too).

so they will be the best against these guys!
