hmmm on past experience from this board about 1/2 of the members here seem to hate H4. Although there is less towns the strategy is more interesting, and although the heroes have no special abilities they now have the option to fight in battle. 7 Heroes as an army has to be seen to be believed when they are powerful. I once defeated some

17 Titans
56 Genies
60 Mages
70 Gold Golems
2 Heroes
400 Halflings

With that 7 Hero army (they were all order).

If they could just have tried to include a better AI and multiplayer that can be used on the net before releasing it then the game would have been more acceptable to many members.

Your right in a way

heroes 4 isnt bad but i think that number 3 was definitley the best out of all of them because of the number of dif creatures and the fact that you could still upgradealthough i do like the thing about having heroes battle

I bet you're just upset because they don't have archangels aren't ya?

You have a point, one of the things I do like is the way in H4 you can move armies about without the need for a hero so that reinforcements could be moved around easier. It also has the ability to have defenders from more than one type of unit defending anywhere so that you can never be sure of exactly what you might be facing when you attack somewhere.

H3 was great, and at the moment is ahead of H3 in my estimation. But if 3do ever bothered to fix the AI and some of the problems over multplayer then I reckon H4 would stamp H3 into the dust!

I am playing my way through the single games on the CD, most of the time with order heros and can appreciate what you say once they are high enough to get some particular 4th and 5th level spells.

E.g.  Can you say "mass slow".  Can you say "hypnotize".  Can you watch the enemy kill each other?

well here's some of my favourite's of them

Hypnotize their mage/genies/powerful units. If they are order too this could really knacker their battle plan as their own mages add their spells to yours, or their genies to hypnotise units. Try it on Titans defending towns and watch the targets fall!

Forgetfullness their achery units - especially usefull for the assault on towns as they march out of their defences and straight into your (hopefully) massed firepower.

Unlike most of the people on these forums I liked HMM4 - can't see what's so horrible about it. My favorite of all heroes games is HMM2 because of its vivid and colourful graphics - the most unique game I have ever played and also one of the first games I ever played in colour. The reason I like the 4th game is because of it's resemblance to the second.
HMM3, on the other hand, had those graphics that I found awfully depressing and dull and that's what made me stop playing this game after less than two months.

At first I thougt that HOMM4 was quite bad - the graphics & all - the map:trees, buildings, units, water 'n all were better than Heroes3, but the "inside" of most towns is horrible (being a student in architecture - which is related to art, I can tell the difference between beautiful and ugly). Also I don't agree with the proportions of the interface... and there are certainly more bad parts.
All that remain unchanged, but I find great "playablilty' in HOMM4 and that's what really matters.

a little disappointing!??!?!?!

HOMMIV is probably the worst letdown I've ever had, PC-games-wise. I haven't played it now for a couple of months. Heroes IV was the game I've had the greatest expectations to, my hopes and dreams were soaring. Then the art and screenshots started pouring in.

I honestly think that HOMMIV is inferior to HOMMIII in almost every aspect of the game (map editor not withstanding), and I think HOMMIII is inferior to HOMMII in a good deal of ways as well (music, graphics (by how good they are, not how many pixels), gameplay, atmosphere), which I agree with some previous poster is the greatest PC game of all time.

Now I'm waiting for Medieval: Total War. Played the demo, and it's really awesome! My hopes are it'll be one part civilization, and one part RTS.

Just a thought, but perhaps some people having played and loved heroes 3 hated 4 because they were expecting too much from it and when it didn't deliver on all counts it was rejected. Kind of like me with Aliens 3 and 4. Not bad films in themselves, but having loved Aliens and Alien 3 and 4 were on huge letdown

A little disappointing? That's the biggest understatement of the year. Seriously, I haven't played it in a long time and I haven't visited this forum in a long time too, and just reading your message, I realize I had actually forgotten about this game.. I looked at a poll on which magic school was the best, and I had to have a think about that one.. I had forgotten about my early days playing it and how clear to me that Nature was the best alignment. I had managed to forget just about all my experience playing it..

Anyway, it's not that bad. But it could have been better. I haven't played or reflected upon the game for months which says something.. Two expansions won't save HOMM4.

Pig I assure you that compared to H3 the graphics are not "tellytubbyish"

And Might is not all it's cracked up to be imo as My favourite army, order can kick the hell out of any might army. It depends on how you play it. As far as AI play hotseat if you can on a 1on1 map it makes all the difference

I miss the old good map generator from heroes3-armagedon's blade. I must download new maps. But town musics are cool except haven and might. and the design inside the towns is not so fine as it was in hmm3. but outside-the-town graphics are really better. and blah blah..... i could right much

expectations too high or angry that it wasn't finished?

I can understand being disappointed with HOMM4 because in many ways it was a step back...fewer towns, fewer creatures, etc., but on the other hand, certain changes were made that are significant improvements as far as gameplay goes...simultaneous damage, Fog of War, creature movement w/o heroes, heroes who fought, etc.
And to me, I'm willing to accept some drawbacks considering that the game has improved "theoretically".
But unfortunately the game is not polished at all, which is why it is still disappointing...

That said, the AI is horrible. There is no arguing that. The character portraits are awful looking and many of the creature designs and animations range from lame to laughable. I won't argue those claims...

I just think everyone was expecting MORE...there was a feeling that "well, HOMM3 is great so they'll just add more greatness to it"...but, it's an entirely new game and they made some great decisions as far as gameplay is concerned. Unfortunately at the cost of it being refined. The big mistake was pushing it out before it was polished (or done).

MP anyone?

HOMM4 was a big let down.  First of all my computer is just a tad too slow to play it smoothly and that certainly makes things worse.  But the game itself was merely OK.  Had I played the game before I bought it I wouldn't have bothered.  HOMM3 was indeed the bst so far.  The graphics were much better, I think, and at least it had a random map generator.  I HATE how you only have like 4 scenarios to play multiplayer on.  The spells absolutely BLOW.  They took too much from them and the only magic really worth anything is Chaos magic and then you had better choose to make that your main magic as you can only build up to a level one of the other choosing.  Also, hate how you have to be called "Player" and "Player 2".  Thumbs down for HOMM4.  I think I am going to reinstall HOMM3 and be more cautious before I blow $50 on HOMM5.

If you have really buff might heroes you can defeat an even larger army with only two heroes.  The secret is spending lots of money on potions of immortality.  Just keep drinking and retaliations will take care of the army before you know it.  And it is easy to buy all those potions, since you don't need to spend so much on creatures to keep your army stocked.

IMO HOMM 4 is a great improvement on the previous games.  It takes much more strategy and planning since you have to decide which creature dwellings you will build in your town.  A great lesson in you can't have your cake and eat it too.  As for the lack of unit upgrades, "GOOD RIDDANCE", all it did was make me spend more money on buildings because I would never waste my money on the nonupgraded units.  The need to choose between dwellings makes your army much more customizable than upgrades did.  Also it is a relief not to have heroes darting around to every windmill, waterwheel, and leprechan in site each week.

I also think the restriction on spells to the magic type of the hero is much more fitting.  It makes more sense that way.  It just doesn't seem right that a life hero would go around blasting every living thing with fireballs.  Although I do find it annoying that I don't have mass haste with my order heroes, I can adapt.  If the game were the same as the previous one with the same spells I would really have wasted my money.

Having played from the first release of the original HOMM anxiously awaiting the arrival of the new one after playing each previous edition, I believe that my wait for this one was the most worthwhile.  I couldn't expect more from it without expecting the impossible.
