I choose magi, genies and titans. For one reason. No need to move.
Magi can either magic fist or poison (my favourite). Works wonders in sieging castles. Goldies have to walk out there and I'm an avid ranger fan. But magi seem to die too quickly if attacked.
Genies are an obvious choice over nagas. The create illusion plus ice bolt is one hell of a combo. Add slow, mirth, song of peace and you've got a superb troop. Create illusion is not only amazingly helpful, it's fun too. Have the enemy face it's own kind.
I prefer Titans over Dragon golems because of their range attack. But I sometimes choose draggies to add that "melee meat" to my army, to make it sturdier.

beat me, but my choice is:
L2 -> Golems -- one of the most economical and longest surviving people, one that stands brave against necros and evil spellcasters.
L3 -> Nagas -- unlike genies they can do damage with their bare hands, with no retaliation! since illusions get dispelled, icebolt lacks the punch, and having 20 genies sing a song of peace on just one guy is wasteful, i prefer nagas to cut a piece out of big stacks, making them easier to swallow by...
L4 -> Dragongolems -- Cheaper than titans, and they bite better too.
Ok, it sounds like a sluggish walker (texas ranger) army, but no -- its a giant peppermill that disintegrates every enemy that gets TELEPORTed into it by your hero.

lev 2 golems because they only cost 6 ore(i think) extra and not the 1 from other resources
i usually dont buy lev 2 so its next to irrelevant which i take
lev 3 i take genies everytime because they rock
lev 4 i prefer dragon golems because of their mapspeed and the first strike rocks also
but sometimes i also choose titans if for example my opponent has chaos or i have a prebuilt citadel(and i ofcourse have this 20 gems for them)
i think if titans were as fast as genies they would be much more better

I am a fan of Order, 80% of the time I play with them, so here we go:
LV 2
The magis have great spells but die to easy. I think golems are sligtly better when you play against players (not the dumb AI). Players kill fast the magis, they have low HP, and the golems instead are difficult to kill with their high HP and magic resistance, witch makes them the perfect body guards for the genies and mages (heroes). But I admit magis are good against neutral stacks and for siege atacks too.
LV 3
Genies, for sure. They are the best lv 3 unit in the game (along with the vamps). Nagas are too slow, and can be good if you use them with teleport, but the genies are far better (and do not requires a treasure, 6000 gold)
LV 4
Titans are good, but you have to build a very expensive castle. Also you need a lot of gems to build it (you already paid 12 gems to buils the genie dwelling), so the choice depends on the resources availables.

Well...maybe it's because titans have represented the wizard's towns in the past two games (I'm not sure about heroes 1).
I dunno why...but I love to see them fly (that is...fly their thunderbolts at the enemy, I just wanted it to match the song )

hmmm, well i usually go for golem/genie/golem though not always. always genies though
life: golem/golem, gold to protect my genies/heroes from the strong range attacks and angels, dragon to get to the shooters as fast as possible or let their illusions block their walkers. mages poison is almost useless, so is curse.
order: golem/golem, mainly because of the heaps of spells that can be devastating for the titan/mage, like forgetfullness, teleport etc. i need a good tactician with them though (against slow).
death: golem/golem, no sucking my troops!
chaos: mage/titan, since there's a big chance of chaos getting BD's, dragon's bulkyness is useless. chaos ward is good on the titans, but the range specialty is the winner here. magi's curse (and poison) is extremely powerfull against all non-BD-troops.
nature: golem/golem, both can be good, i just prefer golems in general.
also i like big stacks, so when i get a dwelling, i usually build the same one in my town. you need the open slots for your single genie-stacks.

These are the creatures I normally choose in the Academy:
Level 2 - Gold Golems, with their amazing HP and 75% magic resistance. Sure they're slow, and that magi can cast spells, but magi go down fast like bowling pins if the enemy has spellcasters/shooters/fast troops.
Level 3 - Genies - what other choice. I never buy nagas except in emergency resource shortages.
Level 4 - this is very, very tough. Normally I choose the Dragon Golems because of their first strike and their lower prequisites, but Titans are also great units, especially against chaos armies. But their Castle prerequisite is too expensive most of the time.

Against all opponents, I choose Magi, Genie and Titan, since all theese creatures are ranged, so they can take out any melee creature before they can cross the combat map(unless they're very fast fliers, of course).
Also, I saw someone who thought it nice to use Mirth on the Dragon Golems. I'm not sure right now, but ain't it so that golems aren't affected by morale..?
Dragon Golems are good for melee, someone claimed. I agree, they are good, but so is Titans because of their neat 'No melee penalty' ability. Pluss, the Titans' ranged ability makes them better than the Dragon Golems, if you ask me..

When you're playing against Death, take Gold Golems and Dragon Golems. Against Chaos, Titans are the obvious choice. Otherwise, it's largely a matter of personal choice. Personally, I like Magi, Genies and Titans.
Nagas are really good units, but Genies are way better. I go with Genies every single time.
