First Impressions
I thought I'd make a post to get your first impressions of playing H4 online.
Mine so far wasn't great We tried a 3 player game, on a 4 player map with 1 comp, and it was very very slow...
Not sure yet if connection speed was to blame, but the data transfer was really bad. Another problem was as last human player - when it went to the comp turn (this includes roving creatures) my screen locked - i could view the others talking but was unable to type or scroll thru my screen. The computer turns were quite long, so this kinda sucked.
Im not giving up yet tho, remember how awful H3 was for transfers? This can be fixed!!
So what about you guys? What u think thus far?

I think 3do needs to find a way to speed up the data transfers... or maybe thats why the patch was delayed so long? they were lookin for ways to speed it up and couldnt find any?
but 1v1 it isnt as bad..however if you play broadband vs broadband connections you save 2-3 minutes per turn as opposed to people with 56k or slower modems playing.
other than that I kinda like it..but 3do needs to find a way to speed it up for the slower modem users.

I think pan, that it would have been my sucky 56k, all the way out to Australia loop, because when I played jb a little later, it was slow as well.
If that is how my multiplayer experiences will be for now, I'll have to wait until a speed up the data transfer patch.

Well I am on Day 6 now of my first EVER oinline H4 game..
We are playing for TOH, on Yuris map the Heart of Winter.
And my enjoyment factor of h4 has SKYROCKETED!
I liked it before.. I REALLY like it now..
Hopefully final battle will be fun also )
Theres a comp player on this map, that doesnot move or anything, just acts as a border, the transfer time and everything is fine no delays or lag.

3do needs to fix data transfers
its worse than playing heroes 3 v 1.0. me and rych played a lil bit of a 1v1 and i began timing the extra time it took for data transfer and it adds about 3-4 minutes per turn. (Sending and Receiving data)
the actual game itself was cool, but think of all the extra time used? say you play 4 full weeks. thats 28 days x 4 minutes. that is 112 minutes extra you play in the game. and for people like me with limited time now, I will either have to only play very seldom when i get the extra time or hope someone with a fast connection is on wanting to play.
I am not sure how this will effect tourneys, but could be bad news..
A big thumbs down to 3do for takin 6 months and not even finding a way to totally fix data transfers.

I wonder then, if slow comp turn was just due to the lag we had in our game? I'll have to play again with comps to see how it goes. Are you playing stationary creatures or no?
I agree it was way more fun to play multiplayer, aside from the lag - just because we had no clue what we were doing and it was fun and exciting again to be doing something new!
I'm a n00b again!! lol

Yeah the map I am playing now kinda requires stationary creatures.. so there is no neutral turn, which may have much to do with the lag.
Maybe a good fast computer and connection would be useful to deal with computer turns.

These are from the read-me file :
__________________________________________________________
Slow Turn Transmissions:
It is recommended that players connecting through a 56k modem, play on the
small to medium sized maps. Larger maps have shown to have lengthy turn
time transmissions.
Computer player Turns:
AI turns are taken on the last human player's computer, it is recommended
that this computer be the more powerful machine in the multiplayer session.
__________________________________________________________
I would assume that the problem we had was in connecting 3 players, and one having a 56k modem.. but we did play a medium map.
When we played tho, i was last and my computer has a 1.8gig processor, and 512mb ram... I hate to think that's not an adequately powerful machine.. lol

First impressions
COming from a player that has owned H4 since day 1 and not played more than 3 hrs total time since then..
My impression of MP is that it is slow...but that is too be expected..
Gameplay and strategy seem way too involved for me to even begin to comment.
TOo bad i lose my cable connection next week and will have to suffer through 56k transfer speed..
Overall.. .FIrst impression is 7 outa 10..and i am sure it will get higher.

back on topic
I played and LOST to kracx for my first online game. Enjoyed it immensely. Yes the games take longer, but we are supposed to be playing a turnbased strategy game, not a first person shooter or realtime game.

I still need to play a full game of h4 online now
See I knew H4 would come out online the week I get back to school from my week break. but from what I have seen, game speed itself wont be much of a problem, its just the transfer speed that could be. I expect turn based games to be slower, but no need to add an extra 1-2 hours to the game when it isnt necessary.
altho games with any fellow broadband users wont even let me notice it.

MP is sloooow...
I played a 1vs1 mp game yesterday, and it wasn't annoyingly slow. Today we tried a medium 4 pl map with 1 min turns, and it took forever. We had to abort the whole thing. All had decent connections 512k ADSL, but each day took about 15mins to complete although we had 1 min turns.

I'm not sure what your latency with Kracx was Ves, but isnt he in NZ? If that is the case there is hope for the 56k connections of the world, although every time I have tried to connect with someone, the first send has been ok, but after that, the transfers were getting longer and longer, until it was taking up to about 4 min.

Back off topic:)
So how is everyone enjoying the weather? Just kidding.
I still am trying to finish up the campaigns...but I was curious...anyone tried it with the antiquated 28 connection? That is what I am stuck with right now.

my end
I have a very stable cable connection, and a powerful system that FYI, has never crashed homm4 since 1.3. That is with every hot seat or online game ive played, I have NEVER had a glitch. But I also have 1024 megs of ram and a dual RAID-0 setup on the system, designed for video editing and creating & burning DVD movies.
If Kracx has 56k, then yes there is hope, but Im guessing you need a fast and stable host then. Our data transfers were literally less than 5 seconds inbetween turns.
