@Agent00BLeRD:
Quote: I meant how to resurrect a fallen hero DURING battle. :-Ū If I lose Tawni what's-her-name in battle, I don't get the time to drag her battered rear to a sanctuary.
There are two ways to accomplish this (asside from drinking an immortality potion pre- or during combat) .
- One of your heroes casts the level 5 life spell 'Divine intervention' which heals all units and resurrects ALL fallen heroes. This spell is particularily interesting in a heroes-only army.
- One of your heroes casts the level 3 order spell 'Town gate'. This spell transports your entire army out of combat and directly into your nearest city. Your fallen heroes will be automatically resurrected when you arrive at the town. (I haven't tested if this works in the campaigns with a loss condition on a certain hero, but I guess it will).

level 1 - bandit
level 2 - medusa or gold golem
level 3 - vampire,cyclop and definitly genie
level 4 - mantis or pheonix
Dragon golem is also very good choice, 10 times better then titan. I do not understand whay people choose titan over DG.
Never mind titans range ability, they still sucks big time.

Dragon Golem looks a little strange in the fantasy world of Heroes. A robo controlled by the red dwarf? Anyway, Titans with their ranged attack are great. Not that great as in H3 but still.

robo dragon is better...(except when the enemy is chaos)...They can give enemy a great headache. whoever attack'em will have a massive loss. When in large numbers, they can beat almost every other melee unit. Titan...only good for vs chaos. Otherwise they are not good as robo dragon.

Well, I'm an avid fan of rangers and once I have an order army it usually consists of two heroes, magi, halflings, genie, titans and a single genie stack. I go for titans because of their range attack. With precision, it's an effective "no enemy retaliation" while with dragon golems, you have to worry about that counterattack if your golems are in low numbers. Besides, rangers can pick them out if they get trapped in some bushes or something cuz their so big.

There are situations in which an offensive tank-unit, such as the Dragon Golem is more valuable than a ranged attacker such as the Titan. Especially when you take the build magi, genies, titan, throw in two spellcasting heroes and you have a very potent but frail army. Personally I prefer to use golems in stead of magi to have a bit more sturdy creature within my ranks, since picking naga's would be a horrible mistake.
But first strike/negate first strike & mechanical is a very powerful and reliable combination in a level 4 creature. Add several order spells like teleport and (mass) slow to that and you'll be able to get the best out of your Dragon Golems. Especially in large numbers, this first strike is really really mean. Add to that that you can summon illusions of them by using your genies, you can have two large tank-stacks protecting your vulnerable spellcasting creatures and heroes.
Titans/Dragon Golems isn't such an easy call. A lot more hostile spells can be cast on titans, such as forgetfulness and the like... Don't underestimate them, there are a lot of creature choices in the game that are a lot easier than this one.

I usually prefer Dragon golems vs Titans (except vs Chaos).
Here are some reasons.
1. they are easier to build - I rather get my drags now than wait for titans
2. they move a lot - I usually run with my heroes, drags and genies only and travel 25 hexes per turn. titans slow your entire army down
3. they are fast in combat - in 2 turns they can strike (unless trapped) and first strike rules
4. they have a lot of spell immunities that makes dealing with them harder. Titans can be neutralized easier.
5. vamps cant drain life from them - a no brainer vs Death.
6. cast fly or teleport on them with your mage and just sit back and enjoy ...

Lvl 1 - Peasant. Not for use in battle, obviously. I try to avoid using Lvl 1s in battle, because I really hate taking casualties. The only Lvl 1 I feel comfortable taking into battle is the Skeleton, because with necromancy and the undead converter, they tend to replace themselves faster than they die.
Lvl 2 - Pirate. He's not particularly good, but always fun. I don't like Lvl 2s because most of them are slow on the map and in the late game that really irritates me.
Lvl 3 - Vampire. I really hate taking casualties, and Vampires are the best as staying alive. Lvl 3s are great because they're strong but more expendable than Lvl 4s, and tend to have neat tricks up their sleeves.
Lvl 4 - Angels. I really hate taking casualties, and Angels are my favorite form of life insurance. I also like Phoenixes for the same reason as the Vampires. In every other town I take the dragon because they have hit points and keep up on the map.
Most of the time I use an army with Lvl 3s and Lvl 4s and two Heroes, one for Magic and one for Combat, and a second army trailing behind with backup Lvl 1s and Lvl 2s and a low-level hero for picking up resources and flagging mines. This way I can clear the map as efficiently as possible.

Quote: Level 1 - Crossbowmen (Life): very effective (especially in the beginning of the game) - they don't have the range penalty and so they're great in flagging the mines (can kill lots of monsters with minimal losses).
Runners-up: Berserkers (Might), Sprites (Nature)
Level 2 - Medusas (Chaos): the stone gaze specialty makes them extremely dangerous (especially to weaker troops). Great shooter for little money.
Runners-up: Harpies (Might), Gold Golems (Order)
Level 3 - Genies (Order): the most powerful spellcasting unit in the game. Great spells, very useful in combat - but they need protection.
Runners-up: Cyclopes (Might), Vampires (Death)
Level 4 - Titans (Order): the ultimate shooter with enough power to change the outcome of every battle. No melee penalty and chaos ward makes them even stronger.
Runners-up: Black Dragon (Chaos), Phoenix (Nature)
I think this guy has a handle on the game, I 2nd his nominations. I would probably put Black Dragons ahead of Titans though, whenever they catch two stacks together and blast them both, ooh that hurts.

Dunno about Harpies ... I always loved the Nomad. But agree with Genies / Vampires / Cyclops as being three pretty imbalanced level 3 units.
