More back on topic now, I guess.
Somebody mentioned that there are no secondary skills in HoMM1. Quite true, and I've found that it simplifies strategies somewhat in that you don't have to worry about a hero having a high level in [some skill] like you do more in HoMM3/4.
In part because there are no secondary skills, it is much easier for heroes to learn spells. Even Knights and Barbarians have no problems with learning spells in the first game. But the Wisdom secondary skill was introduced in the second game, limiting who could learn which spell. In HoMM1, a hero with a spell book visiting a mage guild automatically learns ALL spells in the mage guild. I'm sure you all know how Wisdom works ;-). So, spells are much more of an option for all heroes inthe first game, and can make for interesting startegies, such as Hit and Run, and Dragon/Armageddon combos.
