I really like the crusader, bard and wizard king classes. All the others like +5 to ranged or melee attack, they plainly suck.
I suppose that vampire lord (the one you get with life and death magic) would be awesome at high levels, but it's a bit hard to get. Besides, it probably only works on melee.
Wizard king can give max bad luck even with a ranged attack and that sorta helps....a lot.

Nice to see them all in one list bobntamr1, I don't think this had been posted here yet (at least not recently). My own two favorites are shadow mage, demonologist and monk. What are yours, and do you guys try to reach certain special classes or take them as they come?

The envelope, please . . .
I haven't yet played HoMM4, so I really don't have an opinion there.
I have a tendency to prefer magic over might, though; I always have, since my cousin and I played this Intellevision game (can't remember what it was called), where one player was the Knight, and the other was the mage who threw a cold-spell. I could freeze the Knight, and I would, singing "Buttsicle!" while I did so.
Anyhow, we beat the game, and sent in something that said so, and we got a poster for our trouble. We were pretty happy about it.
Back to our regularly scheduled programming . . .

I'm calling back an old thread maybe but it looks good to put my latest test results into.
There are seven classes that get a side effect on their melee attack according to the description, and three of them have the positive bug that it also works ranged:
ninja D+SC RANGED ALSO poison
lich D+C MELEE ONLY ghost aging
guildmaster NO+SC MELEE ONLY squire stun chance
witch king C+D+NO MELEE ONLY bonedragon fear
dark lord D+NO RANGED ALSO low morale
dark priest L+D MELEE ONLY vamp touch
wizard king O+NO RANGED ALSO bad luck
The lich's description says the "attack may temporarily age" the target. But in my tests, it worked 8 times out of 8, also on 20 behemoths. I think the lich just counts as a ghost: the aging always works (unless there is magic resistance). And of course, it's only the melee attack, and it is permanent (till end of battle).
About the demonologist: description says "+50".
It should be "+50%".
This bonus, like all combined bonuses in Heroes IV, is added to your demonary 100% bonus and your meditation skill bonus (demonology has no effect), and the total bonus is multiplied with your base demon summoning numbers.

2 favorite classes
Personally I love both the Cardinal and the Demonologist. However I always like to have a general in the army just to keep people on their toes.

I prefer the Wizard (order+Chaos), tough it's hard to get, and even harder to get spells for both spell types. But -2 spell point cost is alwasy neat...
Otherwise, I like the Death+Nature Magic, since the Demonology spells at high levels makes almost all creatures obsolete, so your Hero can travel a lot faster.
Also, I like the Field Commander (Scouting+Tactics); +10% damage is always fun... Besides, the skills are two of the most important in the game.

I played a Fireguard in my last campaign, and I just LOVED it .
A stack of 50+ efreeti is difficult to handle, as killing them kills you, a Fireguard takes no damage from them at all .
Assassin is nice as well, permahaste comes in handy.
