Ping and time it takes to transmit turns

I have a few issues regarding the subject above and I'm hoping the answers will help other people too.

1) When you enter a gamespy room with someone there is a graph on the left side of each player witch indicates ping.Is low ping (low graph) faster or is high graph faster? My limited expareince has been low graph faster. I'm playing a person from Australia now- we both have high graph and it takes  about 1 min to transmit turns. Witch brins me to:

2)How much does turn transmitting last with your connection (specify when reply) and what would be a good turn transmitting time?

3)How and when should a host or client save game so that in case of disconnect the resume to be accurate? Whe I resumed a past game I found that the computer had played my turn for me and lost some of my army. But we did not have any older saves so I had to byte the bullet and move on.

Hi Mindreader

1, low ping is best

2, i got broadband and 30 sec - 1 min is normal.

3, the game makes 2 autosaves each turn (this turn and last turn) which one to reload depends on where the connection was lost.

my 2 cents...

low ping is best targan, I agree. I have played games with 15 sec transfers with someone with a 350 ping and i have played 1 min transfers with 350 ping. So partially i think it has to do with your personal ram as well.

well its not as easy as low or high ping is good.

ping and bandwidht isent the same thing.

example.
a 56k user lives next to yr hours. u will have great ping towards this person (low ping, fast)but since he is only on a dial up connection of 56 (very low bandwidht) this could thoretically mean that u would still have a faster transfer with someone living far away if u both got larger bandwidht (lan, cable etc) it depends on what amount of data is beeing transferred.

Usually low pings is the persons u will get a faster transfer too tho.
