Taking Petty Behaviour to new Heights!

Just saw this on another forum. Personally I think that this congresswoman should be shot.....

http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOLITICS/03/13/sprj.irq.congress.france/index.html

I quote

Quote:
WASHINGTON (AP) -- In another swipe at the French, a Florida congresswoman has proposed that the government pay for families who might want to bring home from France the remains of Americans who fought and died in the world wars.

"I, along with many other Americans, do not feel that the French government appreciates the sacrifices men and women in uniform have made to defend the freedom that the French enjoy today," Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite said in introducing legislation providing financial help for the reburial of veterans from the two world wars.

The legislation, which faces uncertain prospects, is the latest show of congressional frustration over French threats to veto a U.N. resolution that would open the way for U.S. military action against Iraq.

Earlier this week, the chairman of the House Administration Committee, Rep. Bob Ney, R-Ohio, ordered that House restaurants change their menus to read "freedom fries" instead of French fries. French toast would also become freedom toast.

Lawmakers have also introduced bills to prevent France from participating in any postwar reconstruction projects.

Brown-Waite, a freshman Republican, said she decided to sponsor the bill after she was approached by a constituent who said he wanted to bring home his father, who was killed in World War II and buried in France.

Some 74,000 American war casualties are buried in France and Belgium, including 30,000 from World War I. The host nations, while retaining sovereignty over the burial grounds, have granted the land in perpetuity to the United States as military cemeteries.

Steve Thomas, a spokesman for the American Legion, said the veterans' group would need some time to look at the legislation. He said the American Legion has always respected the wishes of the families concerning those who died in combat, but noted that "a lot of people may not want to repatriate their fallen loved ones, separating them from their comrades, to make a statement about the French government."

The bill itself has some merits, people do often want their loved ones buried close by. Personally I would prefer them to stay in the graves they've been in for 60 years, but that's not my choice to make. But the congresswoman's comment?

How much more petty can you get? You won't follow us like a lapdog so we'll remove our dead from the cemetaries they've been in (well cared for I might add, the one at Omaha is both beautiful for it's appearance and frightening for the numbers) for 60 years?

How the hell did someone that petty get elected?

The congresswoman is suggesting that because the french are not being co-operative enough about the UN and Iraq they therefore didn't deserve all those americans dying for their liberty in WWII. And if they didn't deserve that right........ they presumably don't deserve to look after the dead bodies anymore.......

Which is ludicrous, the french keep the war graves of all nationalities in good condition. The whole thing comes from the same anti-french stable as freedom fries and recent newspaper reports. They've gone to a lot of trouble in places like Omaha beach to ensure that those graves are specially maintained in order to thank those dead for their sacrifice. Now this congresswoman's using a genuine plan to move some bodies home to score political points in the war of words between the US and France....

Whether the french care or not I dunno, but it's insulting of the congresswoman to act like thousands of graves all accross europe should be dug up and the bodies shipped home, simply because the french won't be america's lapdogs over Iraq.

You gotta appreciate the irony...

They want to bring home the troops that fought for FREEDOM, because they don't think the french people should be FREE to have their own opinion.

Only one thing u can say..
dam fascists

But I agree with the USA, Saddam should be taken out and the French are stupid to say no to it. Dam french.
But still, the US is going against the ideals that it claims to have. Land of the jerks.

Have anybody heard any reactions to this insane proposal?

BTW, I must say that I agree with the veteran spokesman:

Well, politicians...

this is a sad but true statement.
I believe Americans (like myself) should not wonder why other countries hate us.
We shouldn't care about what other countries think about us...
Simple as that.
The reason being: We are a big country, we can easily win the war by ourselves.
Why does America care at all about the French?
That's why we should not have bothered with the UN. Because there is so much disagreement on both sides.
I don't think the answer to the problem is to mail the French remains of our soldiers,
I say just let them protest the war!!!
It won't stop it from happening
And they can't do anything to stop us.

So I agree I think the U.S.A. is as stupid as hell to regard France seriously at all.

All that gives us quite a clear view on the republicansī contempt for democratic processes. Think of how the US tried to blackmail other countries, made open threats in order to influence them in their decision before the UN, ignored the UNīs clear refusal later. How they worked with fabricated evidences, ran propaganda campaigns to make their people believe in the righteousness of the killing that is taking place now.

Some months ago, when I heard or read the question "Are the US on their way to becoming a dictatorship?", I dismissed that as being extremely exaggerated. Now Iīm not so sure anymore.

Goodpig, with all due respect, your attitude is a very clear example of why we won the grand prize of three fully fueled passenger airplanes being crashed into important, crowded buildings.  Sure.  We can win this war all by ourselves.

And the next one.

And the next one.

And by that time our economy should be completely in ruins, you will probably be out of a job along with half the rest of the country, and Pan-Arabism will have been so fuelled we should be fighing a thoroughly consolidated Middle East in World War III all by ourselves, since we have so alienated the rest of the world with our ignorant arrogance by then they will probably not have much interest in interfering with anyone engagined in taking our "I don't care what you think" attitude down a few notches.

Perhaps your lack of caring might change if it is your living room they use as a landing strip next time.

<SIGH>

You must not have children yet, dude.

Hmm, indeed.  Well, here's how it works.  There are five nations with permanent seats on the UN security council ... the US, Russia, the UK, China, and France.  Know why these countries are permanent security council members?  It's because they are the only five nations on earth that posess both these things: a large supply of nuclear warheads and ICBMs.  Nuclear devices are fairly easy to build and lots of countries have them now.  ICBMs, on the other hand, require a space program, and very few countries have that.  In fact, only 5 countries have been both willing and able to build ICBMs, and that's why they're all permanent members of the UN security council (because any one of them could wipe out all human life on the planet).

So, I have to question your Heroes analogy, there, goodpig.

USA=1500 black dragons
France=500 black dragons, perhaps, but who cares when 500 black dragons is enough to cause a nuclear winter and wipe out our species?

I'm not saying France has any plans to nuke anybody, but it's silly to dismiss them (as silly as it is to dismiss any of the 5 permanent members of the security council).  The founders of the UN were quite wise, in fact, in the design of that body.  Personally, I hope the UN survives this war.  It is, for all its flaws, the only mechanism we have for resolving global issues.  It's a shame to see it fractured and weakened as it has been by the Iraqi conflict.

I dunno about this bit so much, when the council was set up only the USA had nukes and china and France took decades to develop theirs. The council had more to do with the political reality of the post war world combined with those main nations that combined to fight the Axis powers in WWII. It's sure not about realistic political clout as neither Britain or France have been superpowers since the setting up of the council.

The reason why these five countries was given permanent seats in the council, was probably because that was the only reason to make them join the UN. Why else would they be there?

And what good would the UN do if, when North Korea invaded South Korea, Norway, Burkina Faso, Pakistan and Paraguay laid down trade boycotts of NK? The rest of the world would probably laugh their hats off...

(Hope you got/understood my point; didn't have time to formulate myself properly...)

Point taken, PH.  It may be the case (in fact, I'll take your word for it) that when the structure of the UN was created, not all the permanent members of the security council had those two, essential power-projecting ingredients: nukes and ICBMs, but it is the case (to the best of my knowledge) that those 5 nations are the only ones that have both today.  It's also, in my opinion, wise not to ignore any nation that can project nuclear power around the globe.  So, I'll admit to factual error, but will hold firm to the argument that the UN's security council now operates on a sound sturctural basis.

Laelth: Firstly, GET AN EASIER NAME TO TYPE!!!!!

Secondly, yeah, all I meant was, though that is the Status Quo now, the original intention of the SC was not based on nukes or IBCM's, as it was set up in 1946*, at a time when only america had nukes, and no-one had ICBM's. I agree it's a half sound reason for permanent status, but it was not the original intention/motive. It has probably now become the reason for membership though.

LOL I got another one for you:
This is based on an actual radio conversation between a U.S. Navy
aircraft carrier (U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln) and Canadian authorities
off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995. (The radio
conversation was released by the Chief of Naval Operations on
10/10/95 authorized by the Freedom of Information Act.)
Canadians:  Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South to
avoid collision.

Americans:  Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the
North to avoid a collision.

Canadians:  Negative.  You will have to divert your course 15
degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans:  This is the Captain of a US Navy ship.  I say again,
divert YOUR course.

Canadians:  No, I say again, you divert YOUR course.

Americans:  THIS IS THE AIRCRAFT CARRIER USS LINCOLN, THE SECOND
LARGEST SHIP IN THE UNITED STATES' ATLANTIC FLEET.  WE ARE
ACCOMPANIED BY THREE  DESTROYERS, THREE CRUISERS AND NUMEROUS
SUPPORT  VESSELS.  I DEMAND THAT YOU CHANGE YOUR COURSE 15  DEGREES
NORTH--I SAY AGAIN, THAT'S ONE FIVE DEGREES NORTH--OR
COUNTER-MEASURES WILL BE UNDERTAKEN TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THIS SHIP.

Canadians:  This is a lighthouse.  Your call.

LOL I laughed at that. What a dumass navy we have.
