wow, you really sound like an expert about the game. What was your ToH / WW handle again, maybe we can play a match anytime soon? 
As for priorities, sure taking a tope CAN be a road to victory, but the question is how fast can you take it and how many losses do you have to suffer. Besides you have to build your hero before and that's where you have to prioritize. Do I waste 4 days to fight for that relic on the island? Do I fight the 7 Ancients now or do I wait 2 more days to fight some other stuff, hoping to get expert earth finally? Playing castle, do I attack this pack of griffins guarding my mercury mine or do I wait until one of my clerics levels up to diplo, to make them join me later? These are just a few of the choices you have, giving you minor advantages that can win you a close game.
Everybody has his own playing preferences and that's good. If you prefer random maps, there's nothing wrong about it - I like them too btw. My point was & is that playing fixed maps on a competetive level requires some basic techniques and strategies, which are also crucial to being successful on random maps. Of course it's nicer to get stomped on a random map, because you can blame it on the map, not on lacking skill

Can't play u anymore anyway; I'll get a Cherry if I keep playing tossers like u hehehe
But anyway: back to the topic.
Like many I know I'd rather jam full army day 8 than try to get lvl 7's at all costs week 1.
So no worries; all depends on ur style.
