Interesting idea, but I wouldn't count on it. Adding new creatures takes a vast amount of time and effort. First it requires new animations to be made, then they need to be formatted and packed for use, finally any new monsters would need to be coded into the actual game. I don't forsee anyone going through all that just for a "goof", especially since each of the aformentioned steps requires a different team member.

If it was as easy as making a special map or writing a script, then maybe, but new monsters are a pain in the @ss to add. It may be possible to make a map or script with all sorts of goofy rules and abilities, just no new creatures.

Not too many animations on the internet are of a character facing in the correct direction for a heroes battle, and also include walking, attacking and dying frames. In addition to that I also understand that adding new creatures to the game is hard even if you do have the sprites done.

There were similar things done to other games though - I once made a warcraft II mod with my classmates as the units. Was quite good, too.

some of you saw the MUGEN????
If not this program mix many characters of the figthing games...

You can see Iori Yagami(KOF Series) and SubZERO(MK Series) VS Ryu (STREET FIGTHERS series) and Charlotte (samurai showdown series) in the same time and the animation are pretty good...
and not only about fighting games you can download a lot of characters like MARIO BROS, YOSHI, THE simpsons, all dragon ball characters, whatever you want... and also you can download complete mods about some theme, you can configure your music your stages etc, I was download 600 characters and I only have a little part of them...

I also remember some characters have the sprites of all moves (standing, jumping, running, attacking, deffending),and the format of this sprites was (.pcx) the animations in the heroes have the same format right??

Well I think this can be usefull...

Even if you have complete animations fron another game they still need to be formatted correctly before they can be used. The animation has to be broken up and separated into various segments, i.e. walking, attacking up, attacking side, attacking down, defending, ect... Then these have to be ordered just right.

Also the animations will most likely need to be resized and definitely need to have their color palettes adjusted before they can be imported, a major pain when you have 50 -80 frames to deal with.

I have just spent around 8 hours yesterday applying finishing touches on a new animation, and it was already more than 90% done.

I have to disagree here and encourage everybody to give ERM scripts a try.

I understand it's hard to make a completely new WoG script, but EVERYBODY is able of writing a few lines and get new creatures or object.

Even if you are a dummy , there's a good FAQ for dummies, available on the official WoG forum.

OK, so I'm new... OK... so I don't know much about HC... BUT I do know something about WoG. I tried this on Forumplanet already, but I'm gonna try here anyways:

One of my friends back here in Poland, who is known to us by the name of Fuuzy has thought of a way to get more creatures into WoG. And that's from the MM6-8 games! He found a utility to extract the graphs. From MM you could get all the necessery graphs of many creatures. Their background is the same as in H3. The Wog Team said that the biggest problem with new creatures is the graphs and adding them to the game is not so complicated. So, extracting them from MM (and resizing a little) sounds like a very good idea to get some MM creatures into WoG!

Here is the adress, where you can download the utility to get the MM animations:

http://www.cybercorner.de/mm7/download/mm7v101.zip

And... Oh yeah... If you don't know how to use the ERM editor, don't say It's 8(..... It's really great but You need to get the hang of it.

Acid Dragon is not new....but his face has gotten a little more humanized.
I have a question for you anyway Acid,...You spoke awhile back on the Forum that you were looking into possibly fixing the Arena script. I was wondering how that was going? It's good, needs work, and I guess I was looking for a progress report.
I also think the idea of M&M creatures in WoG kinda makes sense, but I'd be a little leary of copyright infringements.

And as far as putting "funny" charactors into HOMM, well, it's a nice concept, and good for personal HOMM games, but I still like keeping HOMM & WoG Aesthetic as possible. In other words, I still like the setting of Renaissance and Midevil genres. Somehow, I just can't see Bart Simpson defending anything. If the game changes to that kind of level, count me out of HOMM.

No, not really. They have forbidden me to show my true horrible face, so I had to cover it

Now, about the script.... did I write 'you need to get the hang of it ?'.. well....uhm..... that applies to both sides . You see, when I said that I would fix the script, I just didn't have any idea how easy one scrpit can be, and how difficult - another. So.... the arena script would need a lot of randomized things going on - and a lot of 'exceptions'. I don't even have an idea how to create a balanced set of monsters to fight with... the random artifact is a rather simple thing to do, but It still needs some work - like I don't want anyone getting a combined artifact or an Armageddon's Blade. (BTW I really think those should also be cut out in the 'heroes get artifacts with each level' script. Getting a Sword of Judgement or a Titan's Gladius is one thing, but getting an AB or Titan's Thunder meens just immediate victory) So, like I said - there's a lot of writing the exceptions, and right now I don't have time for playing around with that - but I might just get my half-dwarf-half-demon cousin to do that script. He is better at ERM than me and is now working on a Polish WoG Tournament script (believe me - It's really complicated)

About MM and copyrights: I asked whether It's the matter of only getting the games or copirights etc, but still I didn't get any reply. I hope It's not much of a problem since we already have objects in WoG that come from 'Disciples - Sacred lands', 'Heroes 4', 'Age of Empires' and a few others.

And last but not least: let's talk about this topic . Funny WoG - No, thank you! You see, I'm just one of those boring guys who just don't want anything in the game that isn't fantasy. (I think I've just made a grammar mistake, but whatever ) We can laugh at Alf leading a pack of chickens and monkeys (I'm talking about a picture on the WoG web site) but I wouldn't want to see them in an actual game. Don't get me wrong - I would also want to see a lot more humour pics, but only SEE them, look at them, but not play with a horde of Homer Simpsons. No - laughing at strange creatures is one thing and actually playing them is another.

PS. Just don't ask how a demon-dwarf can be a cousin of a dragon.... :-)

Well you only need to search in google, a lot of pages talk about this engine (MUGEN), in some pages the characers already have the format to the engine(.def) but in others you can find the sprites, I think if you put "MUGEN CHARACTERS SPRITES" in google you can find a lot of pages...

And well, Where you learn about the script and the generation of new creatures???... I interested to learn

Are you refering to making new animations?

First off you need the right tools (links provided at the end):

1) An extracter, to get DEF files (animations) out of H3sprite.LOD (main data file). Even if you don't plan on using any of the original graphics you still need a reference as to how a DEF is formatted. A program called LodMan can do this, it's a windows based tool that handles extractions and imports for Heroes 3, Unfortunatly the import function doesn't work with WoG ,it crashes.

2) Another extracter to open the DEF files into separate frames (BMPs). A program called ModHomm3 does both 1&2 or you can use DefViewer.

3) An image editing program, to create/edit your frames. I use Paint Shop Pro 7 myself. An important note about palettes, Heroes 3 requires that all animations have the first 10 colors of the palette index set to certain "system colors". You'll see these if you open the palette of an existing animation.

4) A DEF complier, to pack your frames back into DEF format. Until recently there was only one person (and NWC)who could do this, the guy who created the complier. There was an older version of his DefMaker available but I could never get it to work. I have just gotten a hold of his newest version and it works much better, unfortunately he has only released it to WoG team members at this point. If you get to this point contact the WoG team and we'll help you out, either by packing it for you or getting you a a copy of the complier.

5) A LOD compiler, to pack the DEF back into H3sprite.LOD. Since LodMan doesn't work with Wog I have to use a Dos based tool called H3sprite.exe to import.

Use the following command in Dos mode to to insert ARTIFACT.DEF (in current folder) into H3sprite.lod (in current folder) Make sure to make a backup of your LOD file first. H3bitmap.exe uses the same format (for packing into H3bitmap.LOD)

TYPE:

h3sprite.exe @ARTIFACT.DEF

6) Cross your fingers and hope everything works!

There may be better tools out there but these are the ones that I use.
Here are links to the tools that I mentioned:

You can find ModHomm3, DefViewer, an old version of Defmaker and various other utilities here.

You can find H3sprite.exe and H3bitmap.exe here.

You can find LodMan here.

**EDIT** the link to h3sprite doesn't seem to be working right now, I temporarily uploaded them here h3lods.zip.

**EDIT** fixed broken link
