hmm.. that's very interesting..

we had soviet times here when i was at school studying medieval history, and in soviet history books (not necessarily compeltely true) they decribed a way of "attracting" peasants to a noble (well, it might have been a lot more severe case than you are talking abiout here):

there was famine and some peasants didn't have much food storage. so they went to the better off people who had the food storage (e.g. generals in a war, etc.) and those wouldn't give them food unless they signed a contract.

and the contract said that they couldn't leave their land and should pay rent for it.

little by little, the peasants in the surrounding lands became very much "attracted" to the noble.

but later, e.g. those who helped to conquer some new land (or whatever other reason), got land and peasants in exchange for their vassal services.

hmm.. was there some truth in it?
