Should smoking be banned in public places?

Earlier in the day, while I was having lunch at a coffeeshop near my home,I was enjoying my meal when I smoke was blown into my nostrils.I hated the smell..and it really takes away the enjoyment of me eating..
So the question is..should we ban smoking in public places?

No discrimination against smokers here, but then if they smoke in public places they discriminate us,too..
It takes away the enjoyment of non-smokers..

hmm soccerfeva has another good topic

did you steal it? im to lazy to check. but if its legit then ill answer.

here in Winnipeg Smoking is illegal in all indoor public places. so you cant smoke in the bar, at restaurants ect.

I think its great, making people feel excluded from public events if they cannot smoke, I sell smokes at work (or i used to) and most people say with the fact smokes will be
15$ a pack (CDN) and that they canot smoke them indoor, most people will simply try that much harder to quit.

Smoking related diseases are a terrible waste of public money. The hospitals could use the extra beds, and cancer levels will drop.

I say Go for it.

No doubt smoking is bad, bad, bad; gonna give it up this summer. But I have to comment Dracos post and say (based on my experience): you won't make a smoker quit smoking by not allowing them smoke indoor or by making the tabacoo prices higer. A smoker will always find money (even when it's his least few cents) or a place when he can smoke. I know it.

About wasting public money: If ppl wouldn't drive so fast, if they wouldn't drink alcohol, if they wouldn't play with fire and and and... That's how the ppl are: stupid.
You can't change the world, but you can change yourself.

Public Smoking is banned in Waterloo region too.

A full ban is still a long way off though, with the Canadian government earning millions of dollars in smoking taxes. Marijuana will probably be legalized (Not decriminalized, apparently there's a differance) too, so the government will make even more money.

I agree, it should... at least in restaurants.  Even if you sit in a non smoking table you still get  rather pungent smell of smoke as the evening goes on.  However, I work in a bar and get recurrent throat infections from the smokey atmosphere, despite the fact I don't smoke myself.  It's horrible.

well Im a smoker and glad to be one, I also live in an area with a smoking ban in all indoor places including bars/restaurants etc..

Nothing bad about it I guess, I dont smoke as much when im out (normally use to go through atleast half a pack when i went out now its 3-4) because I am a lazy person dont wanna walk all the way outside to have a smoke then walk ALL the way back in and continue whatever it was i was doin.

However for the economy its pretty bad as most smokers will generally smoke less with this ban. So taxes will go up again for smokes so they can earn money off them. You know if im paying a damn tax for these things i should be able to smoke where i choose.

meh

Hmmm, also do you think the age people start smoking is gettig lower? I was walking in town and saw some kids around 12yrs old smoking

No, it shouldn't. Just because someone smokes, even though it is a horrible habit, does not mean he/she sould be excluded in any way. Most people have lived with the inconvenience up until now. Honestly it doesn't really bother me.

I think it should be banned in public (especially indoor) places.  It's not a matter of personal freedoms or a smoker offending a non-smoker because of the habit.  The fact is, smoke, be it first-hand or second-hand, is hazardous to your health.

Any smoker should feel free to smoke by themselves or with other smokers who couldn't care less about what they're inhaling.  But please have the courtesy to not smoke around non-smokers.  If you really need a hit, then please be accommodating if a non-smoker asks you to put it out.

I can bear noisy neighbors, and I feel I can always ask them to tone it down especially late at night.  But smokers at the next table are more defensive about being asked to put their cigs out.  And they're the ones who are more dangerous, ie. posing a health risk!

I smoked for about seven years and quit cold turkey when I was 24.

I believe that smoking should be banned in all federal buildings and grounds, but be the owner's choice in their building. If the owner of a bar wants to have smoking, let him. I will just choose to go to the place which does not allow smoking. Where I live, smoking is not banned, but all of the restaurants chose to ban smoking because the family-oriented area does not hold that many smokers. But in private establishments, the owner should choose.

I think smoking should be banned everywhere, even outside, and chronic smokers should be required to have medical assistance.

And one point of advice for females: Women are more likely to get lung cancer than men are. Why? Because on the X chromosome, which women have 2 of, there is a thing that can actually trigger lung cancer when Nicotine reaches a certain level in the body. Men on the other hand, have only one X chromosome, and the shorter Y chromosome does not carry this "thing".

Where I live (Sydney, Australia for those who don't know), smoking is banned in most business and public places. I greatly appreciate this law, because I really really hate having to taste and smell the fumes from smokers, especially outside the buildings and outside public places. It chokes me so badly that I often have few places to sit where I can do things like eat lunch.

Also, smoking is banned in all public transport and government buildings in Sydney.

I am in total agreement with you. I am a nonsmoker, but I do understand that smoking is an addiction, and it would take lots of strength and willpower to overcome it. I applaude you on your sucess in quitting.

It is disgusting, what gives smokers the right to pollute my air?  And why would you want to start?  Does a little white stick hanging out of your mouth make you look good?

When I was younger I tried smoking because of peer preasure.  I don't know why people say it is addictive.  After the first one I never wanted to look at another.  I mean I tried more than one but finally I realized that I was wasting my money and it didn't seem to make a difference to how people felt about you so quit and never had a craving for another.

I live in Toronto, Canada and here  smoking is banned in all resturants now.  The only places you can smoke indoors are bars and since you have to be 18+ to go in you have a choice to go there or not.

Smoking does cause diseases such as lung cancer. My grandpa got lung cancer because he smoked for twenty-five years. Even after he needed oxygen to live, and he knew he had to quit, he still smoked because he was addicted. Nobody say that smoking is not addictive, and it does not lead to death in later life. That topic was proved a long time ago.
I personally think that if people want to kill themselves, they should do it in their own homes.
