What to play against 1. d4?

Since this is a place to discuss chess I thought I'd throw in a serious question . I got the impression that we have  some outstanding chess players in the community who could give me useful advice. I am a passionate chess player with an elo that is currently at 1860 and counting. At the moment I am studying some chess openings to improve my skill. When playing against 1. e4, I have learnt to play the sicilian accelerated dragon (1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 g6) with satisfactory results. The opening line fits my fairly aggressive tactical-calculative style well and is very much fun to play. I also feel that I master anti-sicilian lines sufficiently to compete at my level.

However when people play 1. d4 against me, I have trouble to equalize as black. At my club almost everybody plays 1. e4 so I haven't really got an idea which openings against 1. d4 fit my style of play well. I hate having a cramped position, yet I find it hard to arrive at an open position against 1. d4. I used to play the Budapest gambit (1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5) and am doing fine when people play 3. d5, but I have become dissatisfied when people play 3 dxe5.

My question simply is which opening against 1.d4 you can advice me to study, when you take into account my playing style (aggressive, tactical, calculative, preferably positions where I have space) and my level of play. Thanks in advance for any answers .

That´s my choice against 1.e4 , too! Nice dynamic positions, although it´s not that much fun to play Maroczy Bind and those Richter-Rauzer type lines (6.Be3, 7.Bc4, 8.Bb3) against really strong opposition.

First of all, I consider the Budapest gambit to be playable, but it´s an inferior opening - kind of playing for tricks if you ask me. The simple Bf4, Nbd2 line leads to a += position, black doesn´t have anything to compensate for white´s pair of bishop.

In my opinion, to decide which defense to play as black against 1.d4, it makes sense to include your choice against 1.e4 into your considerations. What colour do you put your pawns on when you´re black? In the Accelerated Dragon it´s obviously the black squares. If you play a corresponding opening like King´s Indian or some Benoni type, you´ll not only feel aquainted with the type of positions faster, but you will also have less opening theory to study. Both King´s Indian and Benoni defense are full of transpositions to Maroczy structures.
These openings also suit a dynamic and tactical playing style, so I think either one of them would be a good choice for you.

Uhm, but wait, I just noticed that you you said "preferably positions where I have space". Hmm, space and dynamic chances, that usually tends to be an 'either or' when you´re black. The Accelerated Dragon is an opening where you clearly lack space, and the same goes for the ones I recommended above. Alternatively you can go for 2. ... e6 Queen´s Gambit or the Slav, where you get more space, but less activity ...

Hope that helps a bit, and feel free to ask again when you have more questions,
Lews

Hello Lews,

I already was hoping that you would answer my question. Thank you very much . Although I don't post at HC that often I have done an awful lot of reading here and found that I share many of your visions concerning Heroes of Might and Magic (even though I play the game at a much lower level, i.e. single player ). Since HoMM3 is often compared with chess, that fact alone made me curious to your advice. So it doesn't come as a surprise that you play the accelerated dragon too .

I realise that my claim of liking space and being fond of the accelerated dragon is a bit contradictory. But at my club I usually play against opponents with a rating of 1550-1900 and at that level I have no problem freeing my position. Players usually confuse the accelerated with the regular dragon and insert the move f3!? somewhere, or simply play 8. 0-0!? instead of 8. Bb3 which allows me to play 8...Nxe4 followed by the freeing move 9...d5. So at my level of play the accelerated dragon often gives me satisfactory play where my bishop duo has the space to be effective. Also, my opponents usually don't know the Maroczy Bind and in my opinion exploiting the space advantage well requires an elo of 2000+ anyway. But I do agree with you that it is annoying when you can't free yourself and have to do with not so dynamic play instead.

I completely agree. You don't want to know how often people play 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 e5 3. d5 Lc5 4. Bg5? after which I can choose from 3 nice tricks to gain a big advantage . But people who know a bit of theory will play a similar line as you mentioned and that's why I feel I need a new opening to improve.

I had done some research already at possible answers to 1. d4 and among the things that looked attractive was the benko-gambit (1. d4, Nf6 2. c4 c5 3. b5). I happen to have some experience with the c5 move already, because when opponents play 1.d4 Nf6 2. Nc3 I can't play the budapest so I play 2..c5 (yes I know, no opening book mentions it but I am feeling desperate at that time already ). Your advice to play the benoni because of the pawn structure makes sense to me, so I think I am going to study the benko. Especially because I assume that the pawn sac allows for dynamic play. But certainly I am going to look at the KID as well and see how I like it.

Your answer has been quite useful to me, so I thank you very much. However, if you feel like sharing your opening repertoire against 1. d4, I would be very interested (especially because you are an accelerated dragon player too).
