Random Threads

A common complaint here is that once a thread falls below about the 2nd page (especially in the Tavern), it's dead unless somebody who remembers it actively goes back and revives it.  The threads that are always seen are the word games and a couple of the roleplaying threads while the rest lead lives of quiet desperation, sitting around page 32 and hoping that a veteran member will remember them.

New members never really see the old threads that people loved and never really have an opportunity to contribute to them.

Old members check the site and see roughly the same threads in the last 5 replies box so the site looks stagnant.

To combat this, there should be a "random threads" section of the front page.  Every half an hour, the server should randomly select 5 threads to display in this box.  That way, every time you check back, new threads would be highlighted.  New members would see threads that they normally wouldn't and might have a new take on them, old members might have a quick twinge of nostalgia and post something new in the old threads.  All in all, it should reduce the stagnation that sometimes happens when 6 or 7 threads come to utterly dominate the replies box.

I dont theres many members here that always love to check the past & actually bring them up.
We dont forget these threads & it's not that hard to go one page over & especially if it's thier own thread.
Plus may take some extra work to make it work like that.

I think that would be a great idea. Although I think that the random threads should have it's own page, something like what is done with the "Today's Post Page." Somehow I think it would be better if for now Val doesn't start messing with the main page until the scripts are definately working on a separate page. Also this type of scripting may take to load so some people may not want this. But I don't really know anything about scripting.

Hmmm... why not agree to appoint a member to grave-dig a random thread on page XX per week.

Let member select the best thread on that page, and revive it.

Promise a +QP for a good and tasteful revival, and let the task circulate between members.

Exmaple:

Bort... You begin. Revive one thread on page 38 of the Tavern. (Task to be completed within one week from the date of this post.)

It might be best to have that thread as a Tavern thread though.

I don't think the 1 revival a week will work very well.  First of all, let's face it, no more than a third of people will get around to doing so.  Second, that would only be one thread that pops up per week.  The point of the random thread box on the front page is to give the illusion of activity and the reality of a more dynamic front page for when people check back over the course of the day.  A single revival a week would most likely get buried under word games within hours.

If one thread per week is not enough then revive one per day.

I don't think a completely random revival is a good idea. On some Tavern pages the number of topics that should be deleted number 75% or so... But then again I'm probably in favour of deleting more stuff than others.

I like the random threads idea, but I think it should be random in the automated fashion. People won't look at the page for good threads, because no one has the time or is interested enough to do so. And the ones who bother to look back there are the ones who go on posting sprees. And I don't think you should be giving QP's to them just because there happened to be a good thread on that page.

Really like the idea, but don't know how to implement it at this stage and busy with uni again. I'll keep it mind if I learn how to code it. The challenge here is not to make a separate processing query for it, which would slow pages down.
