Life army is slow. Both their low speed and low movement rate (especially on the battlefield) makes this alignment one of the worst to pick. If you decide to build ballistas, you must build the stables (on Day 1).
Then with life you must play defensively, so there is lack of strategy here...Well, it depends on the alignment you play against:
1. LIFE vs ORDER - unless your priest has order ward, genies will destroy life army pretty quickly. Also there is Blur spell. Simply, Mages cast blurs, and genies ice bolts. What will you do?
2. LIFE vs DEATH - due to the death ward, with good strategy maybe you can deal with death army, but here good tactic hero and crusaders are a must. Death has good flyers which will block your shooters, and ballista are mechanical so hm...I guess I would choose ballista (and stables) for the quick start on the adventure map.
3. LIFE vs CHAOS - Having fire-based spells (and terror), chaos will win without problem. Only if you have chaos ward, you have some chance...
4. LIFE vs NATURE - If nature chooses to play offensively (with tigers, griffons, phenixes), you have some chance. But defensively - with Water elementals, F. dragons, I guess life will lose.
5. LIFE vs MIGHT - If you have veeery strong tactic hero maybe you can do the battle against superbarbs. But there are good fliers in might army as well - and cyclops - yes.
So, conclusion is that life is weak against almost all alignments. It depends on luck - if your priest gets appropriate ward spell.
How do I play with Life? I hire archers, make them good MELEE heroes. With two archers, shooters behind, and angels - well this seems like the best strategy for life to me. It is good if one archer has some tactic skill, to improve speed and movement. Also with stables, archers and good shooters, you maybe have the quickest start on the adventure map.

It's nice that Life is not so good then. Then there is a challenging alignment to play with.
About champions being so useless, don't forget they have first strike. It means, if you have enough of them, they kill their first stack without retaliation, and the first stack to attack them dies also. The enemy has to send 3 stacks quickly after another. And you have lots of ways to keep them alive: wards, guardian angels, normal angels, resurrection skill, healing.
And the martyr + regeneration strategy: let's say you protect your crossbowmen with defense rating 10, with a superbarbarian with defense 80. The attacker has longrange and attackrating 40, and does basedamage 100. How much damage does the barbarian suffer (through the martyr of course). 400 or 50? If it is 400, then it is a weak-enemy only strategy, to save the life of 1 or 2 crossbowmen.
