How come no one asks me?
The other day I was thinking about some things.
Winston Churchill once said:"There are three different kinds of lies:little lies, big lies and statistics!"
I always hear about statistics and stuff:how many ppl have dogs, how many ppl take the bus(how would they know that?I never buy a ticket!),how much time some ppl spend outside etc.
Statistics are also used in advertisements, like one newspaper ad says:
"When abroad,40% of the ppl miss their newspaper
only 10% miss their dog..."
How the hell do they know I miss my newspaper or dog?
How come no one asked if I miss my goldfish or little sister when I'm abroad?
How come I don't know anyone who has been asked if they miss their cow or horse when their abroad?
Has anyone of u been asked for statistics?
I mean, how can these ppl take about 100-200 or maybe 500-600 or even 1,000-2,000 ppl,ask them buncha stuff and say:
"50% of all the 100 million ppl do that, cuz 50% of the 100 did that!"
It just doesn't make sense!

Good point Silx, no one asked me either!

I've heard a story about a king who ordered to measure the height of every person in his country. Once that was done, he ordered that the average height is calculated and an average bed is made for everyone to make the production more efficient. The bed didn't fit anyone, to short for lots of people and too long for others.
I've done a statisctics research project about why people hate Bill Gates in school and I discovered the following:
* the higher a person's dissatisfaction with their computer, the higher their disaffection towards Bill Gates.
* younger people tend to hate Bill Gates more.
* hatred of Bill Gates is related to dissatisfaction with Microsoft products.
* as women get older, their hatred towards bill gates decreases at a higher rate than that for men. (Maybe they are hoping to marry him and get some of his wealth).

Thats just what is so fantastic on the rules of math!
Those statistics are all made on "possibilities".
There are fixed rules in math, which help you to get the possibility of what ever you want to know.
One easy example for you:
What do you think, how many people have to stay together, that the possibility, that at least two of them will have birthday on the same day, is about 50% ?
So everyone, who didnīt learn this mathematic rules in school will think like this:
There are 365 days in one year, 183 days is a bit more than 50% of that, so the solution is --> 183 persons have to stay together for that 50% chance!
But thatīs wrong!
The correct solution is....---> 32 persons!!!
Their are these rules that i mentioned above, which will lead you to this solution. Try it in your college or university. Believe me, you can win some bets on this!

New poll comes up with amazing statistic: 100% of respondants are willing to respond!
Seriously, I have recieved phone calls from pollsters on a number of occasions, so they do indeed approach normal people. The problem, of course, is that I (and many others, I suspect) rarely have the time, patience, or interest to talk to a complete stranger for 10-30 minutes. Unless the research company is very careful, they're only going to get answers from a select group, including people with the strongest opinions on the topic and people with the most time on their hands. If they're using the phonebook, they're also limited to people who A) have telephones and B) haven't paid to remain unlisted. There are similar biases at work when polls are based on things like mail-in opinion cards from magazines, and whatnot. Those biases can make the resulting statistics useless. According to stats class, a small sample can represent the data of a large group quite accurately, provided it is completely random. So, there really isn't such a problem with asking only 500-600 people to calculate statistics for 200 million. The trick is to get a truly random sample. That's a really tough task. Most newspaper blurbs and TV quips don't bother to give details on how the info was gathered, so it's safest to just take them all with a huge grain of salt.
Regarding the topic question: Pollsters send their material out on a massive basis since response rates tend to be low (15-20% for phone polls, iirc?), so chances are you have been asked. You just didn't bother to send in the card, take the time to talk, click the link, etc.
