Heroes V Artwork
You all know that Ubisoft have been sending artwork to the fan sites, right? They have been online all day now, and there's not a single thread about them yet...

Would be nice with direct link(s), since in a month or two the image might not be easily accessible from the main page, and then it can take a while to work out exactly which picture is commented on.
Ships and Bridge/City with Hole.
Now, this is an interesting concept art. It doesn't look as if it would have been taken from the heroes series but I do like a few of the things on the picture.
- Ships looks much better than the average heroes ship so far.
- Bridges looks much better than bridges I've seen so far.
But is it a bridge or perhaps the upper part of a "ocean city"?

I like what I see. It seems that they are trying to bring back the artistic value of the game that (IMHO) was lost after the second game. This scene shows great imagination and creativity, something that I didn't see in MM and HOMM games for a long time. But now, what kind of building is this? I would place my guess on Wizard/Tower/Order kind of thing (it's the pipes, I guess).

actually there are at least three pictures atm, posted in
http://www.forumplanet.com/StrategyPlanet/homm/topic.asp?fid=5292&tid=1232646&p=1
btw shouldn't red be the color of heaven army? but with that kind of change in the style this little detail might be irrelevant.
i am afraid that the change will be challenging for the developers. did they have to buy the homm license for that?

This is incredibly awesome. Whatever the building is, it looks great. The female archangel is wicked. Nice to see some original stuff, the fact it's a female, the gold, nice details, I can see the 3D-model for ingame right before me and it would definetly rock. About the fact that it's anime: this of course is artwork, when it'll be a 3D-model and scaled down, it won't look that cartoonish anymore I think

The artwork is awesome! And the Angel is something soo beautyful that there are no words to describe that.
Hmmm, you say cartoonish - well, I hate the semi realism of H3,4. H1,2 had cartoonish creature design and that kept the game original, and it is time to embrace that originality again, pnly in a much better form of Ubi's artwork.
Thank you Ubi.

Yeah, the face does. But as I have written before, I don't want to see anime or anything that resembles anime in Heroes. If they could just keep this picture and make the armour and sword a bit more realistic, then it would be fine for me.
Even though I feel somewhat uncomfortable with the female angel. I think angels should be kept male and this creature should be introduced as a Valkyrie (without wings).

I kinda like the armour, but the weapon is a bit weird. Anyway, this is only concept art so theres plenty of time to make changes
ps - is the angel female? I couldn't tell

Hmmm that Angel is a little interesting. It is wearing a cross but at the same time it has a Star of David around its head. Multi religion Angel?

Concept art should not be realistic, and I think it's fine if the creatures in the game have fantasy feel rather than realistic feel.
Why? becasue IMO realism tends to be boring if applied to creature art. You're not making real war and playing a war-sim. You are playing a game and the point is to have fun, and if I'm reminded to much of real world realism (especially the included art), then I don't have fun. I think the game should instead focus on fantasy and making comical effects or the like.
Angels can be female. The unupgraded Angel in Heroes 3 was female, and if you look at say MtG art then as good as every Angel is female. (Haven't looked at lastest expansions though.) Female angels tends to have a lot more style than male ones so I'd say personally I prefer female.
I really disliked the Heroes 4 angel because it looked mechanical, and reminded me of a human in plate armour with a pair of mechanical wings. The flying animation was good, but the static look of the angel told me: "human with armour and with a couple of mechanical wings attached to the back".
I'll give the angel concept drawing a general thumps up.

if it's going to be that much fantasy/anime style archangel, does it really matter then?
remember the people who say: "it's a fantasy game, why shouldn't ..... be .....? everything is possible in a fantasy game."
i wonder how it correlates with saying: "it's just concept art, it will look a lot better when it's scaled down."
and.. i don't really see any clear sign of that archangel being female. maybe it's just some young boy archangel michael or gabriel with a skirt.
oh, getting carried away again, it's a fantasy world axeoth or some completely new fantasy world. in that world the archangels were female and the cross and jewish star have a different meaning. or probably those are just cool symbols, the real thing that identifies it as an archangel is the little ritual knives that hang at the bottom of her skirt.

i dont know about you but these new pics remind me alot of desciples and desciples 2
not a bad thing, i loved the graphics on desciples games.
basicaly i love both the new pics, i just hope the castle pic is from a "in castle" view, not from the map. (i.e. order town near the ocean with shipyard)

While it is true that the graphics should not be ultra-realistic, they should be believable and be based on real references. Things that I really liked in previous games were things like how a lizardman's skin actually did look like a lizards, and the pegasi wings actually did look and move like bird wings.
What makes fantasy so intriguing and appealing to people is that it has its roots in the real world, but takes things to new extremes and without the rules of real life.
In my opinion, the graphics should be bright, colorful, even have some comical appeal without being sloppy and unrefined like in Homm IV.

As long as they rework the sword... But as you said, it's nice to see some free expressionistic minds again. Must say, of the art having been presented, I stand most in favor of the archer.

I've been analyzing the town concept art and here are the conclusions I drew:
- This is one part of the town obviously. And it has several purposes.
a) It serves as a water town gate. At the bottom of the openin in the middle, there's a huge metal pipe that looks capable of opening the "mouth" of the structure, and uncover that it's actually a gate. System that can be used to allow water entrance to ships inside the town.
b) It has defensive purpose, and should protect the city of water attacks.
c) It is obviously a port.
d) The machine thing on top of it may have something in common with the town gate opening mechanism, but also looks like it can be used for picking up goods from ships and transporting them/ bringing them into town.
e) It serves also as a living district, probably called "the dock district"
- This is probably part of the Wizard/Order town - the reasons:
a) The setting is snow. There are mountains covered in snow, and this was the setting for the Wizards in the past.
b) There is machinery in the town. There are also dwarves in town since H4, and Dragon Golems. So, if you were designer of H5, and would've put machinery in some town, and would want the theme setting for that town to be snow, what town would that be?
Overall, I think that the design of this structure is very clever, spicy and fantasy. It has so much story in it, and I'm really thrilled to see it's other parts. Compliments Ubisoft.
