Quote: Curse doesn't have as much effect on low level creatures (compared to bless) because damage won't go below 1.
That's interesting... What damage do 100 expert cursed Trogs - 100 or 80? Bet for the last.

I had already suspected minimum damage would be 1, but I tested it before posting to verify. Minimum damage was indeed 1.
Here's the hotseat test.
100 Familiars attacking 500 Infernal Trogs.
Fam att = Trog def = 4(6)
Hero stats equal (att and def=2) and no battle skills or creature specialties
Curse at expert level
Trog hero had speed arts so trogs could wait, so no defense bonus
Uncursed Fam damage = 100-200
Cursed Fam damage = 100
I retested giving Familiar hero +10 att (12 total) with 50% att/def bonus to see if that made any difference.
Uncursed Fam damage = 150-300
Cursed Fam damage = 150
I tested again putting Fam hero att back to normal (2) and giving Trog hero +10 def (12 total).
Now this is interesting. The manual says 2% penalty per point which would be 20% penalty. The test showed 2.5% per point for 25% penalty. Am I doing something wrong or is the manual wrong?
Uncursed Fam damage = 75-150
Cursed Fam damage = 75
That last number shows that curse is applied first bringing damage down to one, then 25% att/def penalty applied. Can you find another way to interpret those numbers?

My favorites!
These are my favorite spells for HOMM3
L1 : Slow, haste
L2 : Blind
L3 : Forgetfulness
L4 : Resurrect(!) Townportal(boring)
L5 : Dimension door(boring)
Ofcourse, this is with the knowlegde of expert Air, Water, Fire and Earth magic.
In some maps these spells can also be very important.
L1 : Summon boat (can change the odds itself on some maps)
L2 : Ligtning bolt (nice in the beggining to take down weaker creatures)
L4 : Clone, Berserk(Love to berserk a big sack of enemy creatures and watch them beat the crap out of eachother=).)

How could anyone put DD anywhere besides #1??? Or being 4x faster than your opponent isn't considered to be a big advantage any more? Not to mention that in 99% of the cases expert DD will ensure that you always fight your enemy's main hero behind his own castle walls. There is a good reason DD and Fly spells are forbidden in most games.
#1) DD - The best spell BY FAR.
#2) Fly - collect any artifact or relic without having to fight anything. Fly over the mountains and *I think* you can also forget about the pathfinding (but not sure about that since I wasn't allowed to use this spell ever since I came online). Maybe not 4x faster, but 2x faster on most maps. Only log specialist with pathfinding skill can beat that (sometimes). Oh, and did I mention you can still use this spell to fly over the mountains to take your enemy's precious castle?
#3) After that it really depends on the situation. I'll name just a few spells that could take #3 spot depending on how the game goes: Town Portal, Earth Ellie, Implo, Res, Shield, Slow, Prayer, Haste, Berzerk, Counterstrike, Arma, Animate Dead, Anti Magic, Curse, Clone.
#4,5) 2 spells from the above list that didn't make it in #3 will go in here.

Chain lightning is probably the best spell in H3. Also Implosion is another good spell to cast and it is one of the strongest spells in the game.

When I tested this for the "Not in Manual" thread, I didn't mention it there. But the type of road makes a difference with fly (dirt, gravel, cobblestone).

Town portal and DD. Even if you don't have town portal on expert, you can still just move 5 sqares towards your town and cast it. Your opponentwill be shocked when having to siege your full army. DD is also nice. It works good on maps with 8+ regions, each guarded by lots of 7 level creatures. Just teleport over the mountains while your opponent needs to fight his way to you.

During battle, I prefer to start with a Mass Prayer (IF I have it and not playing Necro's), and then use stuff like Resurrection, Blind, Mass Slow, the likes.
Out in the open, the best spells are:
1. Dimension Door
2. Fly
3. Town Portal (Specially at HUGE maps)
4. Water Walk
But that could be just me.

LOL at bloodlust, stoneskin, bless being useless. on expert level, these "useless spells" get cast on all your troops.
my math is probably a little bit off, so someone can fix this post as necessary.
lets say you cast implosion on one of my stacks. that's 800 damage or something.
now i cast expert bloodlust. all my troops get attack + 3. for every point of attack skill thats over your point of defense skill, i gain +10% damage (correct me if im wrong). this means bloodlust increases my damage by 30%. and that's not just a few %. (I am simplifying here to make a point, and ignoring the enemy hero and stacks defense skills)
this means if all my stacks do say 1k damage, i'll add an additional 300 damage to all of my attacks. so i have 7 stacks, so that's 7 x 300 = 2100 *extra* damage. and this bonus lasts has a duration equal to spell power. so i'm doing 2100 extra damage per turn (if we factor in losses i take to my stacks, this amount would decrease by 200 or so each turn)
you would have to cast implosion every round to deal your 800 damage per turn. i'd only need to cast bloodlust ONCE to get the extra damage for ALL my troops. then i could be free to implosion you back, or cast whatever spells are necessary.
