Yes, maybe I'll join but I need to know a few more things:

(I have to ask here cause the AD&D faq site didn't work. I got an "The requested URL could not be retrieved" -error)

1st QUESTION: I want to be an Elf - Wizard, but I see that Wizard is not a class. Should I choose Mage instead? Is that almost the same as Wizard (In D&D?)

2nd QUESTION: Does some of the armors have Armor Check Penalties? If yes, I need to know which...

Hmmm... I really also need a list of spells - though maybe it's ok if I use D&D spells?

I don't know what you are talking about by wizard. I think you mean mage. Mages are the spellcasters.

I have provided a small list of level 1 spells. If you wish to have more spells, then just submit some that you would wish to use. If you want me to get more spells than I'll use some from Baldur's Gate. At this point everyone is at level 1 and it will take a while before you get to be a level 3 mage and can use level 2 spells.

I don't understand what you mean by armor check penalties.

It depends on the type of wizard you want.  Mages are are wizards in the typical sense; big booms, summoning monsters, etc.  Clerics are the healers; curing and defending.  A druid in a wildlife cleric; converting animals, attacking with vines, etc.  Also, an Elf isn't a class, it's a race.  (i.e., human, dwarf, halfling, etc.)
BTW, a Ranger can learn some cleric spells at lvl 9, but that's a long way off.

What are Armor Check Penalties?

You could try going to gamefaqs.com.  That is the main site, just choose PC and then find Baldur's Gate for the rules and spells and such.

Hmmm... ok.. I understand. You obviously don't use the Dungeons and Dragons rules, but the Baldur's Gate rules, right?

I guess armor check penalties are actually only found in offline RPGs. Armor check works like this: If you're going to use the SWIM, CLIMB etc. skills you'll have to substract your armor check penalty on that skill. (Since swimming with heavy armor isn't very easy, right?)

Hey, I know Elf is not a class... You think I'm noob or something?

Well, I think I'd better be a spectator for a while... and then see if I'll join later....

Oh, that kind of thing.  Baldur's Gate is an offline RPG, but it's not the kind when you actually do climbing and stuff.  I think the most exercise you get on BG is going up and down stairs!

For now I'm just sending the party on some adventures. For now, after we kill, or attempt to kill, the spider we will get a ton of crystal from the halfling. However we quickly find that everyone we try to sell it to say that it's very valuable, but no one is willing to buy it. At some point you meet a man who tells you more about the crystal. But this only happens after you complete a short task for him. Is that enough for now? That's the base plot that you're gonna run into for a while.

If anyone would like to make their own personal quest than we can discuss it here. It's important to make the story flow and tie together. If you happen to have important plans that you don't want to reveal than I wouldn't say too much, but simply give the gist of it and how much experience, gold, enemies, treasures you plan on having. The plot is basically yours if you want to tie in a quest of your own.

I am very sorry to ask this but Vadskye can you please delete or just ignore your post. This is not meant to offend you but RSF has been gone and asked me to get the thread going again. I made an excellent, long, long post getting us back into the action. When i went to post it though i noticed your post that already led us to the spider. My post conflicts with your post but mine is necessary for the story to continue.I feel really bad about asking this but i have put alot of work into the detail of my post. I hope you understand. I posted this in both threads but i will delete the one in the RP thread once you have seen it.

I have also implemented some new items into my post. These are:
Poison cures: These flowers cure poison.
Rubbing Alcohol: Stops bleeding and infection.
Bread: Restores 1/4 health when eaten. Cannot be eaten during battles.
Potion: Restores 1/2 health when drunk. Can be used during battles.

The cleric has temporarily joined us to help with the spiders. He will not be attacking unless everyone is fully healed and then he will throw darts with terrible proficiency, something like a Thac0 of like 25. So to hit a spider he will have to roll a 20 and that's only because a 20 always hits no matter what. I'm suprised no one has rolled a 1 yet. Weird. No Critical misses this entire game. But there have been several Critical Hits. Weird.

I wrote a short story as a creative writing assignment. It's base plot is about this thread.

Orion woke up in the middle of the night and heard a low rumbling. It subsided after a few seconds leaving only the relaxing sound of the rain tapping upon the roof above. He sat up still intoxicated from his slumber and hung over from his ritualistic visit to the local tavern. A flash of light illuminated the room, quickly followed by a loud crack and another series of low-pitched turbulences. The shadow of night returns, leaving his eyes temporarily functionless. He got up to light a lantern. This is when he realizes that he cannot hear his brother snoring. Wondering why he cannot hear his well-renowned light sleeper, Orion enters his brother’s room only to find no one. After a quick search through the house, he finds a note left on the dining table.

Quote:
I’ve left with the guild tonight. There have been problems lately with Bandits attacking our town and we’ve just located a large group of them. So we’re going to take care of them. I will be back soon, so don’t get too worried.
Love, Mal

An unnerving scream comes from outside. Orion hurries to the front door to find his brother stumbling out of the woods. He collapses at the doorstep.

Mal: "Get out of here! They will kill you! They'll be here in a few minutes. I managed to slip away only from the darkness and noisiness of the night. But they have been following me for only a couple minutes."

Several orcs come sprinting out of the woods.

Mal: "RUN!"

An arrow hits Mal in the back, killing him instantly. Unable to take anything for the road, Orion flees into the woods. Before he can escape he is shot by an arrow in the arm. Luckily, he loses them in the storm; however, he finds himself lost in the woods.

By morning, Orion has found the Glade River and his hangover is finally gone. Another rumble. Orion rubs his stomach. He’s eaten nothing since yesterday morning. Though he felt no desire for food, he knew it was essential to meet this need for his health.

Orion: “How can I get food without a knife?”

He put his hands in his pockets out of frustration and felt a pouch of coins. Apparently, he had left money in his pants the day before Mal died. Orion was a heavy drinker and had passed out in his bed that afternoon on his way back from the local tavern, so he never changed out of his day clothes. Pleased with his stroke of good luck he decides to head upstream to Havenwood, the nearest town.

The next day, he reaches Havenwood and heads straight for the Lofty Inn, the local tavern in Havenwood. Blinded by his hunger and hankering for alcohol, he ignores everyone and heads straight for the barkeep.

Orion: “I’ll have some ale, please,”

He sits down at the bar.

Barkeep: “It’s still mornin’. What do ya’ want ta go drinkin’ now? We don’t serve any alcohol until the afternoon. We don’t have a keg ready right now. Can I interest you in something to eat? We cook an excellent breakfast. You’ll love our flapjacks.”

Man: “He’s right. You will love them.”

The man sitting next to Orion was tall and rugged.

Man: “I had three servings of them today, already. My name’s Maximus.”

Maximus puts out his hand. Orion takes it.

Orion: “I’m Orion. Where are you from?”

Maximus begins to speak, but hesitates.

Maximus: “Upstream, in a town called Mabley. Where are you from?”

Orion: “I’m from Gladewater.”

Maximus is startled by Orion's response. He whispers to Orion to keep quiet about where he is from. Orion looks at him as though he is an imbecile. Maximus recommends that they get a table in the corner. Once seated, he starts explaining more.

Maximus: “I take it your Mal’s brother.” He said quietly.

Orion: “Okay, who the hell are you?”

Maximus: "I joined the guild just a couple weeks ago. Your brother was the leader.” Holt paused. “I knew you looked familiar. You look a lot like your brother except younger.”

Orion: “Wait you were in my brother’s guild? How come I’ve never seen you before?”

Maximus: “I told you I joined just a couple weeks ago.”

Orion: “Oh. I’m sorry about that.”

Maximus: “No problem. I would have been upset too. I can assume you are here, because you had to flee that night. But seeing you come in here without Mal…”

The two just stayed quiet for a few moments. Orion hung his head in grief.

Maximus: “I’m sorry about your brother.”

Orion: “My brother would have made it, but he tried to warn me. And he died right in front of my face. There was nothing I could do. He died before I could do anything, right in front of my eyes.”

Maximus: “I’m sorry. I too lost a sibling to that mage, my dear sister…”

Orion: “I’m sorry about your sister… So what happened that night? And what mage are you talking about? I only saw a bunch of orcs.”

Maximus: “We went out to fight some raiders that were causing trouble in our town and with our merchants. We happened to locate a group of them. So we all set out that night. I had spotted their camp earlier that evening and informed Mal. You were still passed out, so he left you that note. So we fought the bandits. It was a slaughter. Then while we are going through all of their stolen goods, a mage comes and attacks us. First he starts by casting some spell that destroys all our weapons and armor.”

Orion: “Wait. Do you know who this mage is? How can he just destroy all of your weapons? I knew it didn’t add up that mere orcs would give my brother a hard time. He could slaughter a half dozen of those things by himself and not get hit a single time.”

Maximus: “No one knew who the mage was. And I don’t know how he destroyed our weapons. Some spell I guess, but all of our equipment just disintegrated at the same time after he cast some spell. Then he summoned a ton of goblins and we were defenseless. We were all slaughtered… Somehow I managed to escape.”

Orion: “How did you escape?”

Maximus hesitated.

Maximus: “How did I escape? Oh… I don’t know just luck I guess…”

Orion: “I’m not stupid. What really happened?”

Maximus: “I… um… kind of… didn’t fight the bandits.”

Orion: “What! What do you mean? Why?”

Maximus: “I didn’t want my sister to get hurt, so I made her stay with me away from the camp while the rest of the guild raided the place. We argued for a while. And she was upset that I wasn’t letting her fight, so she punched me right in the jaw and knocked me out for about a minute.”

Orion interrupted.

Orion: “If she knocked you out, then why did you need to keep here away from the fight?”

Maximus raised his voice glaring at Orion.

Maximus: “I just didn’t want to see anything happen to her. She’s dead isn’t she?”

Orion attempted to calm down Maximus.

Orion: “Okay. I apologize. I shouldn’t have said that. Go on,”

Maximus: “Don’t worry about it. I’m just upset about Shelia… At any rate… By the time I woke up, they had already slaughtered the bandits and the mage had already cast a fireball spell severely burning everyone. I sprinted to help fight and that’s when he destroyed all of our weapons. My armor wasn’t destroyed though. It has some magical enchantment on it. I think that spell must only destroy non-magical items, because my sword just disintegrated right in my hand. Anyway, It was too late. I was halfway there when the orcs had killed most of the party. Everyone was running away. And I could do nothing… I couldn’t save her…”

Orion: “Didn’t the mage say anything? Who would just decide to kill everyone?”

Maximus: “He said something about some magical item. And that your brother had it.”

Orion quickly realized what he is talking about. Mal has had it buried in the backyard for safe keeping for well over a year now. He never knew what it was, but was certain that he shouldn't tell anyone of it. Unsure whether to trust Holt or not, Orion didn't mention the item, however, he decided to join up with him to find the mage that killed Mal and the rest of the guild.

After breakfast the two head off to the blacksmith to buy some new equipment. The chimney is smoking suggesting the smithy is quite busy at the moment, especially since it’s a warm day. As they approach the door, they hear someone yelling with great anger. They tentatively open the door. The smithy is arguing with a customer over the price of a long sword.

Customer: (yelling) “I’m not paying 20 gold for a long sword!”

Shopkeep: “Are you kidding? That’s a better price than anything you’ll get for fifty miles.”

Customer: “I’m never coming back here again.”

Shopkeep: “Good. Now please leave,”

The two had a starting contest for a few seconds silently. Orion and Maximus decided it would be good idea to wait in the corner. The smithy and the customer were so upset at each other, they didn’t even notice them enter. Finally, the customer turned around to leave, however not removing his eyes from the shopkeep. Assured that he had won the staring contest, the owner began putting back all of the items back on the wall. At this point his back was facing customer. The customer pulled out a dagger and moved in to backstab the owner. Orion being the quick-thinker that he is. Grabbed a club off the shelf and hurled it at the villain. It hit him directly in the head, knocking the rogue off balance for a moment.

Orion: “LOOK OUT!”

The shopkeep turned around just in time to avoid certain death. He was able to dodge the rogue’s onslaught and grab a weapon off the shelf. Holt grabbed a throwing dagger off one of the shelves and hit the assassin right in the neck killing him.

Smithy: “Thank you very much. You saved my life! Is there anything I can do for you?”

The shopkeep held his hand to his heart in relief.

Orion: “No problem. Don’t worry about it.”

Maximus glares at Orion.

Shopkeep: “I want to repay you. I’ll give you a great discount on anything you buy. You can call me Hector. Thanks again.”

Maximus: “Sure. That would be great.”

Maximus glares at Orion again.

Maximus: “Some free weapons and armor would be a great start on your payment.”

Orion: “Can I talk with you for a moment, Maximus?"

He brings him into the corner.

Orion: “How can you take advantage of this man? It is enough that he was nearly killed; now you are going to punish him for being in the wrong place at the wrong time? Why should he have to lose all his money just because someone tried to kill him?”

Maximus: “Fine. You are right. But I will not reject any offer he makes to me. If he feels the need to be generous, than let him do so.”

The two walk back to Hector.

Maximus: “We’ve decided to not ask anything of you as payment. But we will accept your generous discount.”

Since Orion and Holt are fairly limited on their money, they only have enough to purchase a good set of armor and a primary weapon. Orion takes a longbow and chain mail armor, while Maximus takes a flail and chain mail armor as well. They say goodbye to the smithy and head back to the Lofty Inn to get a place to rest and to let Orion’s wounded arm heal.

Maximus: “We should set out for my father’s house tomorrow, so I can bring him the news of Shelia’s passing. You should probably meet with your family as well.”

Orion: “The rest of my family is hundreds of miles away from here, it would take weeks to reach them."

First you can only have up to 18 dexterity and you must have at least 3 wisdom.

You also get 3 more proficiency points to add to your weapons list. Right now you can only add up to 3 in one category.

RSF, I thought of what is the story about me joining the party after you've defeated the spider. Maybe this could be useful.

While the heroes were finishing with the spider, Mordikai stood upon a captive cocoon. Strange, but it was about ten times bigger than normal. It was somehow suspicious so he told about that to the party:

MORDIKAI: Lads, I’ve found something strange down there with this cocoon. It looks somehow “too live” for me.
VADSKYE: Yeah, I’ve found that really suspicious too. What do the others say?
[whole party in chorus]: Maybe we should check that.
VADSKYE: It’s done then. We should check.

Whole party, with Mordikai, Vadskye and Isildur in the front, started moving towards the web. Each time they moved further, cocoon started to somehow move. It was obvious that it was some sort of a captive which looked really scary now. They all picked their weapons and cut the slimy web from the captive.

Finally, when they’ve finished with that, they found an odd-looking captive. He was looking cadaverous, eyes were almost closed, but you could still see two blinking and sparkling, light blue eyes. Light brown hair almost covered its shoulders that were covered with some sort of fighter armor. Luckily, man was conscious so he could speak:

ISILDUR: By the will of the party, I ask who and from where are you?
STRANGER: I’m Roin Pellagasth, son of Pellagasth the Great, used to be known as Raddagasth once. I was a famous legionnaire in local army to guard the east of Fretsmar, the Forgotten Country.
VADSKYE: Now that we know who you are and where do you reside, we can ask you more, right?
STRANGER: Yes, you can.
VADSKYE: Good. Then please say what are you doing here, who are you working for and are you fighting for the light or dark forces.
STRANGER: Calm down. I’ll answer your questions, but let me catch my breath *coughs*. I was once legionnaire in Fretsmar’s army. I was sent here to kill the spider, but I didn’t know that the spider had youngsters. They found and captured me. Even my ability to become insubstantial for two rounds because of the medallion I carry *mounts at the medallion*. I was slightly stuck in the cocoon, but I got luckily freed by you guys.
MORDIKAI: And…
STRANGER: And I’m working for light forces if you wanna know. By the way, I owe you my life, so I solemnly swear to be your friend and the member of your party.
ISILDUR: Whoa, whoa, whoa… Wait a minute. We gotta decide what to do *murmurs with party members for a moment* Now that we’ve decided, we are pleased to accept your life-debt. Feel free to join our forces against the greater evil.

[stranger Pellagasth has joined the party. He becomes a full party member]

Now that everything’s done, the heroes have to continue their journey with the newly discovered friend who is still looking suspicious.
