Happy Woman Day !!!

Happy woman day........ this is for you ladies of heroescommunity
I hope in every corner of world, womans will get their rights one day

International Women's Day

International Women's Day (8 March) is an occasion marked by women's groups around the world. This date is also commemorated at the United Nations and is designated in many countries as a national holiday. When women on all continents, often divided by national boundaries and by ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, come together to celebrate their Day, they can look back to a tradition that represents at least nine decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

International Women's Day is the story of ordinary women as makers of history; it is rooted in the centuries-old struggle of women to participate in society on an equal footing with men. In ancient Greece, Lysistrata initiated a sexual strike against men in order to end war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women calling for "liberty, equality, fraternity" marched on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

The idea of an International Women's Day first arose at the turn of the century, which in the industrialized world was a period of expansion and turbulence, booming population growth and radical ideologies. Following is a brief chronology of the most important events:

1909

In accordance with a declaration by the Socialist Party of America, the first National Woman's Day was observed across the United States on 28 February. Women continued to celebrate it on the last Sunday of that month through 1913.

1910

The Socialist International, meeting in Copenhagen, established a Women's Day, international in character, to honour the movement for women's rights and to assist in achieving universal suffrage for women. The proposal was greeted with unanimous approval by the conference of over 100 women from 17 countries, which included the first three women elected to the Finnish parliament. No fixed date was selected for the observance.

1911

As a result of the decision taken at Copenhagen the previous year, International Women's Day was marked for the first time (19 March) in Austria, Denmark, Germany and Switzerland, where more than one million women and men attended rallies. In addition to the right to vote and to hold public office, they demanded the right to work, to vocational training and to an end to discrimination on the job.

Less than a week later, on 25 March, the tragic Triangle Fire in New York City took the lives of more than 140 working girls, most of them Italian and Jewish immigrants. This event had a significant impact on labour legislation in the United States, and the working conditions leading up to the disaster were invoked during subsequent observances of International Women's Day.

1913-1914

As part of the peace movement brewing on the eve of World War I, Russian women observed their first International Women's Day on the last Sunday in February 1913. Elsewhere in Europe, on or around 8 March of the following year, women held rallies either to protest the war or to express solidarity with their sisters.

1917

With 2 million Russian soldiers dead in the war, Russian women again chose the last Sunday in February to strike for "bread and peace". Political leaders opposed the timing of the strike, but the women went on anyway. The rest is history: Four days later the Czar was forced to abdicate and the provisional Government granted women the right to vote. That historic Sunday fell on 23 February on the Julian calendar then in use in Russia, but on 8 March on the Gregorian calendar in use elsewhere.

Since those early years, International Women's Day has assumed a new global dimension for women in developed and developing countries alike. The growing international women's movement, which has been strengthened by four global United Nations women's conferences, has helped make the commemoration a rallying point for coordinated efforts to demand women's rights and participation in the political and economic process. Increasingly, International Women's Day is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by ordinary women who have played an extraordinary role in the history of women's rights.

The Role of the United Nations
Few causes promoted by the United Nations have generated more intense and widespread support than the campaign to promote and protect the equal rights of women. The Charter of the United Nations, signed in San Francisco in 1945, was the first international agreement to proclaim gender equality as a fundamental human right. Since then, the Organization has helped create a historic legacy of internationally agreed strategies, standards, programmes and goals to advance the status of women worldwide.

Over the years, United Nations action for the advancement of women has taken four clear directions: promotion of legal measures; mobilization of public opinion and international action; training and research, including the compilation of gender desegregated statistics; and direct assistance to disadvantaged groups. Today a central organizing principle of the work of the United Nations is that no enduring solution to society's most threatening social, economic and political problems can be found without the full participation, and the full empowerment, of the world's women.

One more thing about 1913:

That was the year when women were allowed to vote at "Storting" (The parliament) elections in Norway.

Congratulations to all of you!

Beautiful Start

It's a beautiful start to a beautiful thread. Although I am complacent in my views with modern women's rights I believe there are many yet around the world who donot receive equal treatment. The fight goes on. We musn't forget that. I donot think celebrating an international Women's Rights day helps in the least for the many who still live among men who oppress them for their gender. It's good to remember the many accomplishments but I'm not going to celebrate them just yet. I'm going to remind myself that the work is not finished. I'll celebrate when all the women are freed, not just some of them.

Is only one day enough in order to give women the proper respect?!
What does this mean? That this is women's day, and the rest 364 days of the year are men's days?!
Maybe this day is counter-productive for the feminist movement.

I agree, the women day is the proof the women are unfortunately not yet equal to men.

We let our women go free some 84 years ago and the US has had all sorts of problems since.

Is that supposed to be a joke? If it is, I'm not laughing. Do you think that men should reign superior or something? People like you get what they deserve when they get fired from their jobs for gender discrimination. I take some small amount of satisfaction knowing that your attitude will only get you thrown in jail here in the U.S. As for outside the U.S., that attitude of yours brutalizes women for being a physically weaker sex.

I have two daughters. I'm teaching them how to deal with people like you. I wouldn't be surprised if your delusional sense of humor has already gotten you in trouble in your current employment. How utterly inconsiderate and tasteless. Your humor seems to base itself in the delight of oppressing women.

Let me explain to everyone outside the U.S. Here in america people like him have to find hiding places so that the rest of the country won't find their racist cults and throw them in the slammer. Sure, he can get away with sayings things like that on the internet but I assure you the majority of the people in this country do not agree with him. You can't discriminate on the bases of gender. That is our law. We aren't "subjugating to them" nor did we "let them go free".

They have the right be as free as any man. Women are just as versatile and able and we can learn just as much from them as they from us. They are a part of our entire existence. Without them we would not have many of the things we have today.

I can tell you my daughters brighten my day. They bring a sense of love unique to their own persons, culture, and gender. I believe that is true of any woman anywhere.

Hey, i'm not saying women should get presents all year round. I'm not even saying anything against 8 march. Note all the questions and "maybe". I did it only to set the debate going.

Now that it's started (and heaten), i have this to say: If you choose only one day in the year in order to show your respect for women, doesn't that mean that you don't give women the proper respect the rest time of the year?
And Women Day is not just about giving presents, it's more than that.

If we are to admit that women are not given equal treatmant nowdays, then it's prefectly fine with me, to have a feminist day movement, when people will fight sexism and protest for equal gender rights.
But, we don't want to admit that, and we still celebrate this day as a day of the woman. So if women are equally treated as men, why do we have such a thing?
It's either one way or another, not both. Which will it be?

This knucklehead's been trying my patience ever since he mouthed off in 'why the hatred' Bjorn.  His sense of humor and mine don't mix.

I can see Consis, how combative you've been feeling towards me.  I let some of your comments slip by becuase I felt that eventually you would leave well enough alone.  Plus, I'd been too busy for much of anything with the exception of literary sound bites.

Alas, my expectations for you were far too grandiose.  When the storm comes, when things get really nasty, don't say you weren't warned.

P.S. Gootch:  this ain't no crossfire.  This is a complete farse.   There is no communication going on here, only miscommunication.

P.P.S. Consis, I know you have chosen to disregard my comments to you in our side conversations about The Gootch.  But every time you do this I will use it as another opportunity to reveal his truer self:  He is about the most respectful human being toward women that I know.

And believe me, there are one or two around here who know just how nasty I can get when crossed.  I'm not just saying that because I'm a weenie.  I'm saying it because it's true.  I'm also about as "feminist" as you can get.  So do us all a favor; get offended on nobody's behalf but your own.

Now LIGHTEN UP MAN.  Go kiss that wonderful little newbie of yours and forget this crap.  It's all just  a joke, man.  A joke.

P.I.S.S.E.D. Gootch baby tell me to shut up about you and I will.  Don't want to blow your cover or destroy your rep.  BTW: Consis will continue to take you as seriously as you take him.

Don't Let Me Interupt You Two

Fine, go right ahead. Agree to disagree with my protest. If this weren't the internet he wouldn't get away with snide remarks about letting women go free and now subjugating to them. It's all a big joke to you two obviously. There's a whole world out there with women that are beaten daily, raped, abused, oppressed, you name it. Maybe you two don't see it so much since you live in your cozy american suburbs and cultures. But a joke about such material is all just a joke according to you two.

I feel it's completely inappropriate. If this were a different forum and the tables were turned, let's say to black people in america, take that so-called joke of his and ad-lib the term for black people. Now watch how many people get ignited for inappropriate comments to the delight of the plight for the minority. Joke about how we shouldn't have set them free. Joke about how they are now here to subjugate us non-blacks.

Like I said, you don't have to tell me. Don't let me interupt the two of you telling jokes and agreeing that women are here to force men into submission now that we "let them go free". Have a few laughs at the expense of others all you want. I refuse to be a part of it.

Yes, that ingnitement that occurs so easily is in my opinion another proof of incomplete equality.
In my view the world completley racist free, is the world
where black guy and white guy sit down for a drink
without any prejudices and like two true friends tell
each other few racial based jokes(both anti-black and anti-white) and have a good laugh.

Gootch`s comment may have been inapropriate but it
doesn`t automatically mean he is a
sadistic-chauvinistic-rape-everything-that-hasn`t-got-a-pen!s bastard.

Didn't you say something like "if a woman decides to get you, RUN!" and "women get more protection then men"?

Yeah, it was you. You silly old boy.
