Yesterday a US federal judge ruled the government can't force people to buy health care coverage that violates their religion. The specific coverage in question was abortion and contraception. Since Obama does not believe in free exercise of religion he will no doubt appeal.
Quote:
Yesterday, a federal district judge in the Eastern District of Missouri granted a summary judgment in favor of Missouri State Senator Paul Wieland and his wife Theresa against the Obamacare abortifacient/contraceptive mandate, ruling that the federal government could not constitutionally compel them to pay for group health insurance for their family, including young daughters, that includes required coverage for medical services that they deem religiously objectionable.

Well, actually the judge has had a few Kentucky Straights too much, because I don't see why a RELIGIOUSLY based opinion should trump an individual-opinion-based one. "I don't believe in God, but I STILL wouldn't support abortion", is just as valid a point, so either all pay or no one, otherwise everyone can claim "exceptions". Say, Jehovah's witnesses wouldn't pay for anything that has to do with blood donations and transfusions and so on.
Remember, religion generally isn't an excuse for anything when you live in a non-theocrat state.

@JJ
First, the free exercise of religion is a right protected by the US Constitution. Second, the US government has no authority to tell any citizen that they must purchase any product or service.

I think what he meant was, that should be alone by itself. However, if there was an exception because of this or that reason, freedoms involving religion had no privilage over other freedoms.

You may disagree that people have a right to live their religion but the US Constitution says otherwise.
