PH and PM -- the tale

So I'm standing in the atrium of the airport with this rather large sign on a stick that says:

PRIVATE HUDSON
I'M HERE!!!

With an arrow pointing down.  Everybody in the airport is walking by me thinking I am meeting somebody from the war or something.  It was a kick.

People are getting off the shuttle escalater in huge numbers. Somehow PH slips behind the crowd and comes up beside me -- surprise!  He is much taller than I imagined, and quite appealing to the eyes.  A complete British gentleman.

We came back to the house and got him settled in, then went sightseeing downtown -- the Capital Building mainly.   He told me funny stories about stupid questions Americans had been asking him:

"Do they have cows in England???"

We drove around capital hill and saw the governor's mansion and stuff, then went to my son's school (my son being a majorly big fan of PH) so they could meet and say hello.  Then we picked up my husband at work.

My husband, being somewhat of an historian himself, and PH started talking and didn't shut up for five days.  They really hit it off.  I just stood by and watched and grinned.  It was great.

We had a wonderful time.  Let's see -- a drive through the Mountains to Echo Lake where we walked up a snowy trail, then we had a picnic by the lake.  Of course here the altitude is quite high, so when we were walking the trail, as PH was chattering away, it dawned on him that he was having trouble breathing.  It was quite funny and I explained to him that it was because we were at about 8,000 feet.  (It was when we paused on that trail that I took the pic of him that now appears in RL Photos thread.)

As we were driving down the mountain we pulled over in one spot to take some snaps.  Much to PH's amazement there were shells lying around on the ground, and a couple of practice targets off in the distance nailed to some trees.  As we walked down the hill into the woods we found hundreds of shells of various calibres and several beer cans.  As this was a bit of a shock to the poor bloke (they don't have guns in England you know) I explained that it is quite common in these parts for people to do such things as target practice in the woods, even with a bit of beer mixed in to spice things up a bit, and that in some ways not a lot had changed in the last hundred years.  We picked up a bunch of shells and took them back to the house, but then thought the better of him trying to take them on the plane back home given how tight security in American airports is these days.

We also went up to Buffalo Bill's grave and Museum, spent pretty much an entire afternoon there.  On the way up the mountain an amazing thing happened -- a fifteen-point elk (huge) and his harem was just moseying through the yards of people's houses along the roadside.  A lot of cars were pulled over and people were quietly standing by taking pictures and stuff (That's where the other pic of the elk came from).  It was a real treat -- one of the largest elk many people around here had seen in quite a while.  We carefully approached, got pretty close to the group and got the pictures.

One night we went to The Fort, a restaurant in the foothills imaged after Bent's Fort down south.  We had quail egg appetizers and Buffalo steak. This breed was walking around in the restaurant playing his flute.  We got one of his CD's so PH could take it back to England.  After dinner we all had a glass of brandy and went out to the courtyard where a big fire was burning with people all sitting around it trying to keep warm and just visiting.  Soon the flute player came out and joined us.  We all sat there for a time and visited, and PH got another taste of the modern southwest.

We also went to the Garden of the Gods one day -- a beautiful park of giant, raised sandstone planks that is the ancient result of an earthquake which pushed the plates almost straight up in the air some several hundred thousand years ago.  We kept my son out of school that day and he went with us.  That same afternoon we went to the Seven Falls in Manitou Springs -- this strikingly deep canyon in which there are seven consecutive waterfalls plummeting hundreds of feet down the canyon wall.  There is a giant elevator shaft that goes straight up the inside of the mountain three or four hundred feet (which is only about half way up the canyon) to a landing called "The Eagle's Nest."  PH braved this trip up to the landing despite being a bit touchy about heights.  You can walk up to the railing and look straight down into the canyon -- a dizzying experience even for one who it not queazy about heights!  My son started scaling up the side of the canyon wall until he rounded the corner and found a sign that basically said "DO NOT CLIMB THE CANYON WALLS UNDER THREAT OF ALMOST CERTAIN DEATH" or something to that effect.  Then he got down.

We didn't get to see much of the Air Force Academy from the inside of the campus because it was getting late and they were about to close, but we did take a drive through there too.  PH took my whole family out to dinner that night to an American-style restaurant.

One day we went down Antique Row, a series of antique shops in town, and we found these old arrowheads some woman had found on her farm out on the plains and sold to the shop.  We bought a bunch of them for souvenirs for PH's family.

In the evenings, we'd watch movies and then sit out on the back porch and sip mixed drinks and talk late into the nights.

It was truly a great time.  PH has been an on-line friend to me for a long time, but don't let his dry on-line sense of humor fool you.  In person he is really wonderful company.  He is witty and intelligent and fascinating and has a great sense of humor.  We were very sorry to see him go, and made him promise to come back in the Spring during March Pow Wow -- the second biggest yearly Pow Wow in the United States.

Yes Yes But....

He's British! What about the accent? Does he have one? What does it sound like? Whenever I read his posts, I only hear my voice, but I know he's probably sounding more British than I ever could. Is it thick or light? Does he sound like the British accents we hear in the movies?

There isn't a single "british" accent any more than there's a single American one. I kind of sound a little like John Lennon I guess, just a little softer, and nothing like most  British film accents unless you've seen a film set in Liverpoool

I guess if I could be bothered, uploading a sound file wouldn't be too much hassle

OH and you forgot to mention that those dumb idiots who fired those rounds left half a dozen live ones lying around too PM

LOL!  That's right, I did forget that.

And yes, Consis, he's very thickly British in the tongue as well.  Although incredibly articulate (as one can see from his posts), he's also rather soft-spoken.  I remember asking him to repeat himself on one or two occasions is how thick an accent he has.  But while I wouldn't be able to distinguish between British accents at all, I would go along with the John Lennon analogy.

Do a sound thingie, PH!  I think that's a great idea.

Immediately becomes best friend with her... husband.

Goes on a trip that could be somewhat romantic and starts getting trouble to breathe... and then goes visit an american military base?

For once I agree with you Stiven -- you and PH are SOOOOOOOOOOO different.

If you and I ever got within a mile of one another we'd be at one another's throats LOL!!!!

Out of respect for PH's privacy, I will refrain from further comment about any romantic liaisons he might have had while in the States... (snicker)  Let's just say I didn't tell all.  And I'm certain he will not either.  He's too much of a gentleman.

(Sorry PH.  I just CAN'T let him get by with all this nonsense.)

PH, I forgot to tell about your observations concerning the size of the "average American vehicle."  Care to comment???  (LOL AGAIN)

mod hat

Argh, what a mess.

The e-mail function () doesn't rely on pop-ups, so no excuse there.  Messages more appropriate for private transmission will be removed from public threads.

Penalty applied on page 4: insult.

In short, this thread is subject to imminent cleaning.  Comments should be directed to the feedback thread.

Well, that may well qualify as the most absurd penalty ever applied at HC.

Wonder how long this post will last before being swept under the rug.

well i did critise khaelo earlier when it came to subjective QP:s so what to expect really?

just proves my point about QP:s.

They are to subjective. You critise em and you recieve penalties.

You kiss their butts and they will find every reason to give you a QP.

Never expected this from khaelo though, a shame when people cant handle critism and is supposed to be in a powerful position.

Which leads us too problem #2 she is way to proud to ever remove the penalty even if she comes to her senses and realises that jokes like that happens every day.

But as usual... some people suffer for those jokes and some not.

EDIT
oh and to comment the most obvious aŽla "quetions directed to feedback thread after imminent" cleaning... off course there would be no evidence of the penalty then right so there is nothing to discuss really.. just my word against yours.

Too obvious.

But if you now think the post deserves a penalty, leave it to be and we will discuss from there ok?

EDIT 2:
As a matter of fact i would like the whole discussion to stay because now i realised that PM insinuated that im a heyoka again.

And being called a "heyoka" leaves me with a great personal trauma and innerly disrespects my personality and i find it deeply insulting.

So if i get a penalty for that, im sure you wouldnt mind giving your friend PM one either?

or.. you could just admit it was too harsh and weŽll all give this a rest.

Funny, as of 30 minutes after this message was posted, the penalty is still there.  Lemme guess, "mission accomplished," too?

The new keystone mods have a lot to do with why I post so rarely now.  Spare me the "fine, leave, nobody wants you anyway."  I'm well aware that is the prevailing attitude in the mod squad.  This isn't a "oh poor me, beg me to come back" post, it's simply stating a fact.  If the current goal of the moderators is to suppress posting, then they are doing a fantastic job.  When one has to worry about borderline random behavior from moderators, it means posting ceases to be fun.

Feel free to move this to whatever boxed in thread you desire.  The designated free speech zone or whatever it's called now.

Anyway, since PM went to the trouble, I'll add my thoughts

PM is also much taller in RL than I thought she would be, but other than that she's one of the few people I know who are truly the same in person as offline. What you see on the forum here, is pretty much what she's like, and that is certainly a good thing in my experience. David her husband is one of the few who voted for Bush who actually could make any sense of just why he did so, a remarkably intelligent gentleman with an excellent understanding of history. We had a good few discussions on the Wild West I can tell you Nicky, her son is a remarkable kid, very artistic (like his mother) and sensible.

PM's house btw is HUGE, and I had the pleasure of staying in their rather expansive guest bedroom whilst I was there. The place is filled with examples of her very talented paintings and works, some of which you see on her site, all of which are truly what I consider art. Echo lake is truly beautiful and more than worth a visit, as to be honest is all of the Denver area. I really enjoyed my stay there and saw some quite memorable sights, not least of which would be that from lookout mountain over Denver and Lakewood. The Fort was quite something too, something about a campfire that brings people together to talk when normally they'd be reserved and aloof.

Oh and yes, I do get vertigo sometimes, so most of the pictures of seven falls were taken by PM rather than me Antique row was fun, entire warehouse sized buildings full of almost total junk to most people, but valuble to someone.

As for March, I'll see if I can afford it, but I shall certainly return sometime in the future.
