Hi, Violent_Flower,
Quote:
People have been complaining lately about the board just being stale and we need something new to add.

Yup.  And, as you've already noted, they scrutinize the mods and complain about QPs.  The "I'm bored!" griping is as typical as the QP issue.  Stick around, and you'll get to hear some of the "Woe is HC!  The Good Ol' Days are gone!" complaints, too.    The forum evolves.  And...the more it changes, the more it stays the same.  Eventually, the idlers will stop demanding to be amused and go find something else to do.  Or they will discover that HC already has interesting stuff going on and will get involved.  Or, best of all, they will start some interesting stuff themselves.

So I don't agree that a mod shuffle is necessary to de-stagnate HC.  That said, you've demonstrated more good intentions for HC by suggesting a solution than the complainers have by just whining.

Edited to remove imprecise statement.
Edited again to explain previous edit.

Being a great writer does not make you Moderator material.
I totally 100% Absolutely disagree with you on everythang you said Violent Flower.
For one just because you can make a paragraph it doesn not make you better then the other person.
For 2 switching off Moderators is a terrible idea.
Many never even come to the other forums, they stay with thier own.
Like in TOH or heroes 4-5 forums. They can care less about the Tavern & the VW.
There is more to being a moderator then just writing paragraphs.

I know of some moderators, one in particular that I talk to sometimes, that does not really read anything outside the forums that they moderate, they couldn't really care it seems.

To be a moderator, you do not have to have exceptional writing ability, look at some of the current moderators, some have english as NOT being their native language, now it might be tough coming and moderating at an english speaking forum, but they still do it, and they do it damn well.

Some moderators spam in a while, and I for one would not like to see an overly serious moderator something like this:

My post: Im so cool

Moderators post: THATS SPAM, THIS IS SERIOUS FORUM, PENALTY!!!

If there was a moderator like that, which I hope for the love of God there wont be, then I would quit this forum, and not come back until that moderator gets the boot.

So I agree with Aculias in this instance, you do not need to be a very good writer in order to be moderator material, anyone can be a moderator, but some others might have a higher chance of becoming one then some certain other people, wont list any names but yeah.

I hope you understand and I hope this makes sense to some of you atleast

I think the main issue to consider would be trust, but that's an issue with the squad always. Certainly any revolving door policy would have to definately exclude modsquad HQ.

I would think that the biggest problem would be in the implementation. Valeriy is known for experiencing times when he cannot be all present, and we mods take care of things for him; but there are things we can't do - mod-rotation would definitely be one of those 'can't do' things. It would involve changing user permissions etc - us regular mods don't do those things.

I would really question a lot of people's motivations for wanting a quick stint in the squad - it would lead me to think that there is a specific agenda they have in mind. If someone were really dedicated to the improvement of HC, it should be something they'd want to do full time. Of course, I do tend to be cynical. I'm sure not everyone would have an evil plan brewing when they applied.

I don't think it's an issue as to which forums a person reads, moderators are forum specific - so no one would be put in a forum they aren't active in anyways.

Will write more later, time to brave the snow (we've been dumped on HUGE!) ....

Halloween was fun The kids scored big time because the weather kept a lot of people indoors - so people were giving out double the usual amount of candy to get rid of it. Score! It was a little bit scary though, because the snow came suddenly and we had a ton - so no one had time to clear it - and it was already quite dark, so lots of patches of ice for little ones to slip on. And it was freakin' cold! But anyways 'nuff about that.

So here's a thought in the same vein as your idea - but not quite.

What if we were to create Moderator apprentices, or aides or however you'd like to call them. A sort of Fellowship that say 5 members take part in per cycle. They could have their own thread to say what they would like to do, who they would reward, what threads they would move etc - from there the existing moderators would make the final call on what actions to take.

This could be really helpful for us in the choosing of new moderators, because we would have an opportunity to see how people would respond to certain situations. It happening in the public eye would also allow for feedback from the rest of the community as well.

When a Mod Apprentice makes a bad call and the rest of the community comes after them with torches and pitchforks - we'd really get a chance to see if they have what it takes to wield the sword for real

This naturally would not guarantee anyone a seat in the Squad, but it would certainly help in that it's often very hard for us to say whether or not we think someone would make a good moderator. Because we have very little to go on - especially in cases where the member applying isn't someone we know.

That said, anyone wanting to participate wouldn't necessarily have to want to be a permanent member of the Squad, and that would be perfectly fine too.

I really think that doing something to get more active participation in the direction HC is taking is a great idea.

I just wouldn't really support the modding of anyone who hasn't proved themselves worthy, but hey, I'm a very territorial chick - and you're talking about letting others in on my turf... no way!

I think that is a great idea and still will have the same feel without it interfering with the current flow of things, just adding to it a bit. It would weed out those that are just out for blood and show the rest of the members what type of permanent mod that person could be. It gives you a chance to see how objective he or she can be and the responses to such a thread would say a lot about character and devotion.

Would they be responding to an actual preexisting forum or do you make up a whole new forum just for this experiment to play out? I have heard of members wanting just poetry and or creative writing forum or any subject for that matter. Just wanted to know what your thought is on that. I guess a practice forum is what I’m trying to say.

This would be an excellent way to “interview” for a permanent mod in the future. I hope that we can put some serious thought into this and members will come to participate. Thank you for putting your time into coming up with an alternative to this, it sounds like it would be very interesting and fun too.

I’m glad that Halloween went well for you, I took the kids to Chucky Cheese and we played games all night and ate the worst pizza ever. My youngest son has Cerebral Palsy so it is hard to walk up and down all those stairs and he gets very tired quickly. So I surprised them with a night out to visit the big corporate mouse. There was some candy and lots of over priced video games but it was a good time. How much snow did you get? We have just started to get cold in Illinois with temps dropping over the past few days. Most of our trees still have green leaves suffocating them.

Thank again for you thoughts on the subject.

Yes it is great that people are thinking of ways for improving the community.  If you think this mod all in is a way to do that then it will be fun to watch!  {lol}

It would be nice though if people could spend just as much effort improving the community, and posting, rather than talking about it {I really don't see it is the moderator's fault and don't see that different moderators would improve the community more than the community working together and individually to do this.}

But I am going to keep my mouth shut in future {about this}, and watch this unfold from the sidelines.  I still have a keg of ginger in the garage

btw I tend to keep my claws trimmed, I don't need a public acknowledgement of being correct - I know that some people need to figure these things out through their own experiences.

Well now lets not get our fur in an uproar. I don’t require public acknowledgement of anything, but thanks for the comment anyway. I do have however feel that I have to explain myself to those that don’t understand, that it was just an idea. I thought ideas were a good thing if they were positive.

See here for example, you have insinuated that I said that due to the lack of good mods we have a lack of participating members. You see, I did not say that, I was just putting out an idea. So no, it is not about public anything, although we are on a public message board so that is par for the coarse. I have enjoyed our talks and thank you; I will be here all week…

I was merely saying that you guys go for it, and I will no longer voice any objection/ negativity on the matter.
