I believe a mace is made of metal and shaped more like a round ball at the end with spikes to bludgeon someone to death

Well, your theory fits in nicely, except the HoMM2 weaponry. I think you could be right.

Well, that sounds like a spiked club to me.
Anyway, you will be surprised by the variety of the middle-age weaponry. There were hundreds of types of spears, for instance.

Yes, the goblin is correct.
In HOMM2, he was fighting with a stick,
in HOMM3, he was fighting with a mace (stick with ball with spikes).
The one blade that was won is the Armageddon's Blade. The other one that the king (Kilgor) took was the Sword of Frost. Kilgor was the king of the barbarians, therefore also of the goblins. And after the reckoning, in HOMM4, they were gone.

Speaking of the gorgon, I'm now finishing the last parts of an article that describes the remake of all current towns in the 2x6 level creature system of HOMM5. The gorgon is featured as a level 5 chaos creature. I expect to post the article either later tonight or tomorrow.
