ways to cntrol the number of units

i have not played a HOMM game before but i have read some previews and topic threads and i think i understand the game mechanics to an extent.i have heard things that sound rediculous(to me).like 10,000 units.there must be something to control the number of units other than resources.there must be a limited number of units alowed per stack.how about heros having a "command" stat which limits the the number of units they have in the stack, this stat can have other uses like the magnitude of the bonus given to armies under his control and to control the overall number of units controled by the player why not borrow a little from RTs's and make the player build "houses"(or something that keeps with the fantasy theme).

Well, Ogre...

If you like this subject if I was you I would consider a visit thread called "wandering monsters" where this called "rank and command" system is discussed.
The thread has gathered some dust and is probaply in page number two or three.
Still I would say that stacks in Heroes that large are pretty unusual. Skeleton armies and things can have stacks like that, but it's mainly because they could fight example against 7th level units which are much more powerful than first level units.

Really strange that you're interested about game that you haven't even played...Hmm..Future player maybe?

Well it is more useful in some situations to have two smaller stacks if you want to use each for two different purposes.

However, it would take an insane amount of time to 10,000 decent units (skeletons are cannon fodder).

10,000 Phoenixs, now there is something.

Well you guys missunderstood me,i am not against winning by numbers.i just want you to think how including a limit on the number of units in a stack will increase strategic depth.i heard that unit stacks can exist without heroes in the new game,if an unlimited number of units were allowed in a stack nobody would want to use this feature exept for movement and scouting.but with the aforementioned contorol system a limited numer of units would go to the stack of the hero, any units which cannot be brought under a hero stack would have to be independent.and the "house" idea, just tink about this senario-

you have recruited(built/created) a small group of lvl 1 units but you dicide that higher lvl units uould help you in the situation you are in,normaly you uould just look at your resources and see if you have enough resources to build the units. But with the "house" system you may hve to build new houses(if you dont have enouh)and use space that can othewise be utilsed to build structures which give upgrades to your units which ... you get the idea. Thus ever decition you make affects every other decition you make, just by including a limit on the number of units!i want veterans to give serrious tought about it.

That's something i will like - but it's impossible with H4 - because now HEROES are not some special part from the ARMY - they are just part of the ARMY.

We now know that you can make an army even without hero (and hero without army) - so there is no way to apply that rule.

I like KING'S BOUNTY very much for that fact - there was some special magic that you can increase the maximum controllobale units by x2 (some potions) - and in order to kill the last VILLAIN (and even the previous two, but the last one was having lots of dragons - lots) - you were supposed to use about 4-5 of this potions - and very fast - for one week to gather your army from all the castles and beat him. Creatures which were put in your castles - didn't need support from money or leadership.

But this was long time ago - I wished NWC never allowed HEROES now to fight in battle - but it seems that is what public wants...

10000 units?

Maybe I'm mistaken, but I think that the maximum units in one slot are 9999. If you could put 10000 units in one slot, you would be able to put also 99999 units because the number consists of 5 figures... By the way, I think it's almost impossible to find 9999 units in one slot. This could happen:
a) if you have edited the map and have decided to have some fun
b) if you have played the map for some 30 or 40 months and you haven't attacked a 1 level creature group
But this won't happen very often.

Game limits

The map editor has a superior limit of 9999 units per stack, but by playing the game you can gather more than that in only one stack. And that's not so unusual: necromancers with a lot of necromancy-powering artifacts and town amplifiers can obtain near the 100% of the creatures as skeletons, and if you attack legions of wandering monsters... Diplomacy is other good way to gather thousands of creatures, specially if the "day of the xxx" happened some months ago and you're discovering unexplored area. This enormous amount of troops isn't new: I remember having 14000 skeletons in one of the the HOMM2 Archibald's Campaign scenario.

By the way, has anybody investigated what's the real creature limit per stack??

have to be about 30000 - 32000 thousand, 32767 probably if they are using shorts - i've seen Heroes2 overlaps once for units with range about that. I was able to have units with -1 number of units - and it was weird. But didn't gone so much with it in Heroes3 - of course someone can try.

I think the limit for number of units per stack in h3 is about 26,666 or something like that.

I got that amount of skele in the player made map: Lord of Wars, and after that the number becomes negative and that legion of skele just "disappear".

Back to the subject. I guess limit for creature amount per stack may not be possible in h4.

10000 units is not the point.that numerical can be replaced by the words "a huge number of units".this is about UNIT LIMIT(not some impossible number like 62000!, some resonable limit that would realy affect gameplay.

reply to malkia

if heroes are normal units and  multiple heroes allowed in one stack, will the bonuses from one hero apply to other heroes?wont this unbalace the game especially in the later parts of the game where it is possible to have a large number of heroes in one stack?how will stacks with multiple heroes be represented in the world map?

You cannot Stack Heroes.  If you want more discussion on multiple hero strategies read the "command radius" thread.
