It's better to call the necropolis as the Underworld town
Since the necropolis and the inferno are now combined, I think it's a lot better if we call it as the Underworld. Necropolis means "city of the dead" therefore it's a town of undead, not demons. So again...I just hope that the necropolis will be called underworld later in HoMM4.
Personally, I just don't like the way NWC combined necropolis and inferno together... it's just not good anymore.

You're right, as far as the original meaning of the word goes...
But, if you want to take that line of thought, the skill necromancy in the game is incorrectly named. The following quote is taken straight out of the online version of the World Book encyclopedia.
"Necromancy «NEHK ruh MAN see», is a term taken from two Greek words meaning corpse and divination. It is the belief that the future can be discovered by communication with the spirits of the dead. Necromancy was a common belief in early times. "
To be correct, we shouldn't even call them necromancers (meaning people who practice necromancy), now should we? But, in the Heroes series, "necromancy" is understood to mean the dark art of raising the dead and having them do your bidding.
The term 'necropolis' was coined to be a fancy word for 'cemetery' in the early 19th Century. And what better place to find dead bodies to practice necromancy on than in a cemetery?
So, having said that, the town aligned with Death magic in Heroes 4 will be called the Necropolis, even though Thanatopolis (City of Death) would be more correct. And, this town will have a few nasty denizens of the Lower Planes hanging out in it as well as its Undead. What better force to be directly opposed to Life magic?

webster.com is describing the word Necropolis as:
"Etymology: Late Latin, city of the dead, from Greek nekropolis, from nekr- + -polis -polis
Date: 1819
: CEMETERY; especially : a large elaborate cemetery of an ancient city"

City of the Dead would be a good name...
First of all, let me say that it sucks how they're combining Inferno and Necropolis. Personally I think that this is a terrible idea. But since they are, they should at least give it a good name. Necropolis is a name I always liked and the one they should keep. Also, i'm curious as to what creatures this city will contain.

How about calling it the Abyss? That's a name that came to me suddenly.I quite agree that the necrolpolis name isn't too appropriate now that non undead creatures are in the town.

Not that I know of offhand, but I'll see if I can find a way. I went there through AOL.

I'll keep calling it necro since thats all ill be using in the town. I dont have a clue why they combined the towns i would of like a choice of undead units rather than inferno ones. They could of easily fitted in 8 undead units into the game.
